GENRES THAT SELL -- WHAT KINDS OF BOOKS MAKE SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHORS SUCCESSFUL?

The more I feature independent- and self-published authors on Blondie Marie (every Wednesday), the more I notice a recurring pattern in the kinds of books that are sent to me to feature. With a few exceptions, of course, the vast majority of books I feature -- and am asked to feature -- fall in one of several categories: romance, fantasy/sci-fi, and self-help/inspiration.

ALTERNATE VOICES: ANDREW JOYCE

Picture My name is Andrew Joyce and I write books for a living. Kate has been kind enough to allow me a little space on her blog to promote my new novel Resolution: Huck Finn's Greatest Adventure. I think it's a good book, but what do I know? Anyway, I'm kinda shy about tooting my own horn. So I think I'll turn things over to my dog Danny -- Danny the Dog. He always has a bad attitude and usually does not speak highly of me. But please understand that we co-exist as the old Soviet Union and the Unit...

CHANGING PERSPECTIVE

I feel like we've been talking a lot about characters lately, yes? I hope I'm not sounding redundant in all of these posts.

Today I wanted to talk about perspective. We all know the different points of view we can take when it comes to telling our story: first person, second person (rarely used, but still a thing), third person limited, third person omniscient, etc. We learned about them in elementary school, we learned about them in creative writing class, we've got it covered.

But even within...

ALTERNATE VOICES: YOLANDA DE IULIIS

In addition to guest posts, I have several authors who filled out questionnaires, to offer a little more insight into them and -- as a result -- into their work. In the first author Q&A, Yolanda De Iuliis opens up about herself as a writer and about the two books she's written up until this point.
Picture WHEN DID YOU WRITE YOUR FIRST BOOK? HOW OLD WERE YOU?
I wrote Underneath my Soul when I was 13 but it took around 10 years to complete as it was a biographic poetry book.

HOW MANY BOOKS HAVE YOU WRI...
