THE MAGIC RAINBOW STONE – MY FIFTEEN YEAR JOURNEY FROM IDEA TO EBOOK.

Whilst on an Easter break in Devon in 1999, a unique idea for a children’s book popped into my head.

My son and I bought a beautiful dolphin carved from fluorite. Within hours, the idea for ‘The Magic Rainbow Stone’ was born.

I began to plan the book that very evening and, by the end of the holiday, I knew exactly what Sapphire, Citrine, Amethyst and Emerald looked like. I hadn’t invented Zoe at this point, in fact my main character was going to be a boy! I was already well acquainted with my baddies, Sid and Hilda, as I had invented them as a child back in the 1970’s.

For the next few months, I scribbled ideas down on paper, which I kept in a special folder under my bed. I studied books on writing, bought myself a word processor, and kept the idea secret from everyone but my son.

I will never forget entering a bookshop in the early days. What an experience! As I stared at the thousands of books lining the walls, it struck me how competitive the book world was. From that moment on, I decided I must make my book exceptional in every way to give it a good chance. I loved my characters and wanted to do them justice.

For the next few years, I battled chronic migraine. Good days were few and far between, but I worked on the book when I could, as well as just about managing to hold down a part-time job.

Halloween 2013, I met Ellie Stevenson, author of ‘Watching Charlotte Bronte Die’ and ‘Ship of Haunts.’ She told me she was an independent writer.

The idea of becoming an indie author suddenly began to appeal to me. I’d spent enough years writing the book. It would be great not to have to spend time sending it to overwhelmed agents and publishers who rarely take anyone on. I could get my treasured story out to the world within weeks, rather than months or years! I couldn’t afford an illustrator. No problem! I would do that myself.

Fast forward nine months to a very exciting July 2014. I now had a polished manuscript, a striking cover design and ten illustrations – one for the beginning of each chapter. I pressed a button and my ebook was published!

It’s only been out a few days but there’s already a buzz around it. Friends and family are very excited and I feel as though I’m in a dream – fifteen years of keeping my book a secret and now half the town has heard about it! It’s been a long journey. I haven’t reached my destination yet. I hope that will come with more hard work promoting my treasured story.

The kindle book is currently available on Amazon.
