Westward Ho: The sky & the American road

More photos and road notes from Michael Moore on a recent road trip from southern Colorado to Northern California are up on his blog. (And why does a small "s" and a capital "N" feel correct?

1967 Chevrolet C-10 Suburban, Harraseeket Harbor

Caught a few photos of this beautiful machine just before I jumped on a boat out of Harraseeket. I hope to revisit the truck, find out more, and shoot more. Found one of these in Colorado Springs last year, a 1973 3/4 ton version, and not a 4x4.

1964 Plymouth Belvedere; 1965 Chevrolet Impala

from Michael S Moore, in southern Colorado: "Westcliffe Petroleum in Westcliffe CO, where they sorted out our trailer lights [actually the Tundra's trailer lights' harness] quite handily while we waited; their 1950 Ford fuel truck:

"...and just next door something of industrial strength for under fifty grand in a used car lot;
"And then these two slightly hot-rodded sixties beauties, Plymouth and Impala together and looking ready to race--

"Plus a fire truck and an Airstream, all available, albeit for outrageous prices...

"Anyway, more later, as summer winds down here in the American West..."--MSM

Germans & Indians & Jews & KARIN & Karl May

My new novel KARIN will be out in US (Pantheon) and Canada (House of Anansi) next year. It's an unusual love story set in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s, when everything's going to hell. Also set on El Llano Estacado, in West Texas and New Mexico. Like my first 2 novels, aspects of story and setting were inspired by family history. Images and settings in the photographs below were important to the writing. But, like my other books, KARIN is definitely a novel. Fiction. The New York Times just posted a video all about German fascination with the Wild West, which is one of the themes explored the book. More about KARIN here. And perhaps you'd enjoy The Law of Dreams, my novel about the Irish Famine and the Famine-era emigration to America. It won the Governor General's Award for 2006.  The O'Briens is my novel about a man trying to get rich and guide his family through the terrors of the 20th century while struggling with the dark side of his nature. And Travelling Light is a collection of short stories about coming-of-age, lonesomeness, landscape & the idea of The West.
I'm leading a 5-day writers'  workshop on the West Coast in mid-October. Called Memory & Mythit's about using family history & mythology in fiction and non-fiction/memoir.  The link has details. It is happening at a retreat center on an island off the coast of British Columbia. Sounds like an amazing setting. I think there are some places open, so check the link if you're interested.
Here's one of my memoir essays: "Refugee Dreams"
