Ella Holmes White (December 18, 1856 – January 31, 1942)

Ella Holmes White (1856-1942), Mrs John Stuart White, came from New York, NY and lived at Briarcliff Manor, NY. She would later state that when in New York City she would always stay at the Waldorf-Astoria. She boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg with her maid Amelia Bissette and manservant Sante Ringhini. Travelling as a first class passenger Mrs White shared cabin C-32 with longtime companion Marie Young. Mrs White remained in her cabin for the entire voyage and only left it when roused by the collision which she described as if the ship had run over a thousand marbles. Mrs White and her maid were rescued in lifeboat 8. She later testified before the American Inquiry that the Titanic had broken in two before sinking. Ella White died in New York City at the age of 85. She was living at the Plaza Hotel when she died.

Paul Cadmus (December 17, 1904 – December 12, 1999)

Paul Cadmus was an American artist. Cadmus's sister, Fidelma, was the wife of philanthropist and arts patron Lincoln Kirstein. He is best known for his paintings and drawings of nude male figures. His works combined elements of eroticism and social critique to produce a style often called magic realism. He painted with egg tempera. He worked in commercial illustration as well, but Jared French, another tempera artist who befriended him and became his lover for a time, convinced him to devote himself completely to fine art. For a period, they worked together with French’s wife as well, calling themselves PaJaMa (Paul + Jared + Margaret). Jon Andersson, a former cabaret singer, who became Paul Cadmus's longtime companion of 35 years, was a subject of many of his works. The two met on a pier on Nantucket in 1964, when Andersson was twenty-seven and Cadmus was fifty-nine. "I never wanted to be with anyone else", Cadmus remarked. Thirty-six years later, at sixty-three and ninety-five, when Paul died, they were still together. Jon can be seen in the David Sutherland 1986 PBS Documentary about Paul Cadmus entitled Paul Cadmus, Enfant Terrible at 80.

Hamish St. Clair-Erskine (August 23, 1909 – December 17, 1973)

James Alexander Wedderburn "Hamish" St. Clair-Erskine (23 August 1909 – 17 December 1973) was an English aristocrat aesthete. At Eton College, St Clair-Erskine was the lover of Tom Mitford. He attended Oxford University. According to James Lees-Milne's diaries: "At Oxford he had the most enchanting looks – mischievous, twinkling eyes, slanting eyebrows. He was slight of build, well dressed, gay as gay, always snobbish however, and terribly conscious of his nobility. At Oxford he was friends with Evelyn Waugh. Hamish St. Clair-Erskine was homosexual, but nevertheless, Nancy Mitford fell in love with him, and it was due to this unrequited love that she attempted suicide and wrote her first novel, Highland Fling: the male lead is based upon St. Clair-Erskine. At St. Clair-Erskine's death in 1973, Alan Payan Pryce-Jones described him as a "bright apparition who once upon a time swept past them like a kingfisher: all colour and sparkle and courage [...] [he found] small place in a world which turned away from an unambitious charmer whose only enduring gift was his charm".

Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (April 25, 1694 – December 15, 1753)

In 1711 George Frederick Handel’s opera “Rinaldo” was a hit, and the next year he moved in with Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington. The eighteen-year-old Burlington held court at Burlington House in Piccadilly and at his country estate, Chiswick House. Here over the years he gathered a coterie of artists including the poets Pope and Gay and the architect William Kent, also fresh from Rome and eager to spread Palladio over the English countryside. The atmosphere of this “verdant and artistic hothouse,” Ellen Harris reports in her wonderful book on Handel’s cantatas, breathed a “luxurious and indolent sensuality” and a “distinct homoerotic undertone.”

Timeline & Places:

• April 25, 1694: born.

• 1704 to 1729: lived at Burlington House, Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 0BD, Regno Unito

• 1729 to 1753: lived at Chiswick House, Burlington Lane, London, Chiswick W4 2RP, Regno Unito

James O. Bloss (September 30, 1847 – December 15, 1918)

John William Sterling (1844–1918) was a founding partner of Shearman & Sterling LLP and major benefactor to Yale University. In Sterling's will, he directs: "no interment other than my own and that of my sister, Cordelia, shall ever take place" in his Mausoleum in Woodlawn Cemetery. An exception is made, however, "in case my said friend, James O. Bloss (1847–1918), who has lived with me for more than forty years, should desire to be interred in the said Mausoleum and should die without ever having been married." Cordelia Sterling is burried with her brother. Bloss died less than six months after Sterling, according to his sister, of a broken heart, and is not buried with his friend, though the reason is unknown. He is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester (same cemetery where are buried Susan B. Anthony and Lillian D. Wald). Sterling's obituary in the New York Times referred to "his lifelong friend, James O. Bloss, a retired cotton broker, who made his home with the testator for more than forty years." James Orville Bloss died suddenly in New York City, on December 15, 1918.
