No, evolution is not atheism’s creation myth

Every religion has a creation story, some way to explain how life came to be before anyone understood the natural explanation. All of these creation stories have been turned into myths when over 150 years ago Charles Darwin discovered natural selection and applied it to the idea that species have evolved from earlier species.

Discussing atheism, activism and my book Parenting Without God (video)

I was a recent guest on Acronym TV with host Dennis Trainer, Jr. We discussed America’s hatred of atheists and my new book Parenting Without God, along with my views on ridding the world of religion and why atheist activism matters.

Sorry Republicans, Jesus was a Marxist

There has been a lot of discussion recently about Jesus and his political views. Putting aside the debate about Jesus existence for a moment, let’s assume for this article he did exist, and even was the Son of God. I want to look at the Christian version of Jesus of Nazareth and see if he was, as some have claimed, a Marxist.

The importance of men in the feminist movement

Can a man be a feminist? I think so, and I know many others who think so as well. However, over the past few months I have seen a number of self-proclaimed feminist women claiming men are not welcome in the feminist movement. I really wanted to address this, not so much to say yes men can, but to start a conversation. As I stated, I believe men can be and should be feminists and I make a case for this in my book Parenting Without God as well, because I think it is important to raise our kids...

You don’t have to be a faitheist to support interfaith activism

An argument has been made on a fellow Patheos blog that firebrand atheism has distanced itself from allies in the struggle to solve social justice issues. The solution, writes the author is a more tone down atheism that is more inclusive of religious belief and does not attack the religious allies for their belief; a [Read More...]

Is a military draft the moral thing to do?

This is an adaptation of a short essay I wrote in my moral philosophy class about conscription (military draft) and the morality of a volunteer vs. draft based armed forces at a time of war. In chapter 4 of Michael Sandel’s bookJustice: What is the Right Thing to Do, Sandel deals with the issue of [Read More...]

Why I believe libertarianism is immoral

When it comes to American politics, most people think of two parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. Now everyone knows we have third parties, but usually people only think independents, and after the 2000 election many will reference the green party that Ralph Nader ran under. One party that is fighting to make an impact however is the Libertarian party. However, they are not doing so as a true third party. Sure, Gary Johnson ran for president as the Libertarian candidate, but his campaig...

My evolving views on Islam, terrorism, and the Middle East

After 9/11 I knew there was one thing to blame; Islam. The barbaric religion and the evilness of the Quran gave rise to extremism; it’s all there in writing. So let’s blame Islam and work to destroy it before they take over the world.Boy was I wrong. But I need to explain in better detail because I don’t fall so easily into the camps of the extremist position that Islam is to blame, but I also don’t fall so far into the left that I absolve them of any guilt or think we should avoid criticizin...
