Holy Catholic Church

Does this phrase, the Holy Catholic Church, mean that we are all Catholic?
The Westminster Confession of faith writes that: “The catholic or universal church, which is invisible, consists of the whole number of the elect, that have been, are, or shall be gathered into one, under Christ the head.” (PCUSA 1999, 6.140) The universal church includes the elect of the church through the ages, and is invisible in that only God himself knows their identity. The visible church, which we can observe, consists of those elected and those not elected by God. Jesus’ parable of the sower makes this point by talking about wheat and the weeds (tares): “Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” (Matt 13:30)
The elect are holy—set apart—by God for reasons that God alone understands. Catholic means we are united in diversity (catholic with a small “c”); it does not mean that we are all Roman Catholic (Catholic with a big “C”).
The doctrine of election is a necessary condition for the sovereignty of God to have any real meaning. God created us and Christ redeemed us before we were born, which implies that we cannot earn our creation and redemption (Eph 2:1–10). Our total dependence on God for salvation becomes obvious when we truly acknowledge and grieve the sin in our lives. Although our inclination to sin has been passed down from Adam and Eve, we also actively sin for ourselves. It is like our spiritual ancestors chose to live in enemy territory, and we grew up living there speaking the local dialect [1].
So, none of us have earned our creation or our redemption. The gift of faith is both free and priceless. The mystery of election is that we do not know who is saved or why. Jesus simply said: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
Our task is to spread the Good News, to pray for the lost, and to trust that God is good, just, and always honors his promises.

La Santa Iglesia Católica

¿esa frase, la santa Iglesia Catolica, significa que somos todos Católica?
La confesión de fe de Westminster escribe que: “La Iglesia católica o universal, la cual es invisible, está formada por todos los elegidos que han sido, son o serán reunidos como uno en Cristo, quien es cabeza de la Iglesia.” (Iglesia Presbiteriana 2004, 6.140) La iglesia universal incluye los elegidos de la iglesia a través de las edades, y es invisible en porque sólo Dios lo mismo conoce su identidad. La iglesia visible, que podemos observar, consiste de los elegidos y los no elegidos de Dios. La Parábola del sembrador de Jesus hace esta punta de hablar del trigo y la mala hierba (cizaña): “`Dejen que ambos crezcan juntos hasta la cosecha; y al tiempo de la cosecha diré a los segadores:“Recojan primero la cizaña y átenla en manojos para quemarla, pero el trigo recójanlo en mi granero.”‘” (Matt 13:30 NBH)
Los elegidos son santo— santa apartada—por Dios por razones que sólo Dios entiende. Católica significa que estamos unidos en diversidad (catolica con una “c” pequeña); no significa que todos somos Católicos Romanos (Catolica con una “C” grande).
La doctrina de elección de una condición necesario por la soberania de Dios a ser algo significante o real. Dios nos creo y Cristo nos redimido antes nos nacimos, lo que implica que no podemos ganar ni nuestra creacion ni nuestra redención (Eph 2:1-10). Nuestra dependencia total de Dios para salvación sera obvia cuando nosotros aceptamos verdaderamente y lloramos los pecados en nuestras vidas. Aunque nuestra inclinación de pecar ha sido transmitido de Adán y Eva, también pecamos activamente para nosotros mismos. Es como nuestros antepasados espirituales eligieron a vivir en el territorio enemigo, y nosotros crecimos viviendo allí hablando el dialecto local.
Por esta razón, ninguna de nosotros ganabamos nuestra creación o nuestra redención. El regalo de fe es ambos libre y precioso. El misterio de elección es que no sabemos quien es salvado o por qué. Jesús sólo dijo: “Mis ovejas oyen Mi voz; Yo las conozco y Me siguen.” (John 10:27 NBH)
Nuestra tarea es a transmitir el evangelio, a pida por los perdidos, y confia que Dios es fiel, bueno, y honorará sus promesas.

El efecto de estos pecados personal será más evidente cuando hemos tener hijos de nosotros propios y vemos con nuestros ojos propios el efecto para ellos de nuestros pecados y quebrantamiento.

Bedeutet dieser Satz, die heilige katholische Kirche, da𝛽 wir alle römisch-katholisch sind?
Nein. Das Westminster Confession of Faith schreibt: “Die katholische oder Universalkirche, die unsichtbar ist, besteht aus der ganzen Zahl der Auserwählten, die unter Christus, dem Haupt, in einer versammelt waren, sind, oder werden sollen.“ (PCUSA 1999, 6.140)1 Die Universalkirche umfasst die Auserwählten der Kirche im Laufe der Jahrhunderte und ist insofern unsichtbar, als nur Gott selbst ihre Identität kennt. Die sichtbare Kirche, die wir beobachten können, besteht aus denen, die von Gott gewählt wurden und denen, die nicht von Gott gewählt wurden. Jesu Gleichnis vom Sämann macht dies deutlich, indem er über Weizen und Unkraut spricht: “Lasst beides miteinander wachsen bis zur Ernte; und um die Erntezeit will ich zu den Schnittern sagen: Sammelt zuerst das Unkraut und bindet es in Bündel, damit man es verbrenne; aber den Weizen sammelt in meine Scheune.” (Matt 13:30) Die Auserwählten sind heilig—getrennt—von Gott aus Gründen, die nur Gott versteht.
Die Doktrin der Auserwählten ist eine einnotwendige Voraussetzung um der Souveränität des Gottes real Bedeutung zu haben. Gott hat uns geschaffen und Christus hat uns erlöst, bevor wir geboren wurden, was bedeutet, da𝛽 wir unsere Schöpfung und Erlösung nicht verdienen können (Eph 2:1-10). Unsere völlige Abhängigkeit von Gott zur Errettung wird offensichtlich, wenn wir die Sünde in unserem Leben wirklich anerkennen und trauern. Obwohl unsere Neigung zur Sünde von Adam und Eva weitergegeben wurde, sündigen wir auch aktiv für uns. Es ist, als hätten unsere spirituellen Vorfahren beschlossen, auf feindlichem Gebiet zu leben, und wir sind dort aufgewachsen und haben den lokalen Dialekt gesprochen.
Keiner von uns hat also seine Schöpfung oder Erlösung verdient. Die Gabe des Glauben ist Frei und unbezahlbar. Die Mysteriös der Auserwählten ist da𝛽 wir wissen nicht wer gerettet wird order warum. Jesus gesagt einfach: “Meine Schafe hören meine Stimme, und ich kenne sie und sie folgen mir” (John 10:27). Unsere Aufgabe ist es, die Gute Nachricht zu verbreiten, für die Verlorenen zu beten und darauf zu vertrauen, da𝛽 Gott gut und gerecht ist und seine Versprechen immer einhält.

Parks: Mentoring Matters

As the father of three 20-somethings, I have frequently been torn between repressed anger, guilt, and a feeling of total inadequacy as a parent. Thanks to the influence of Sharon D. Parks, Big Questions; Worthy Dreams, I have found mentoring to be a reasonable response to my parenting situation.
Parks makes two points that clarify the mentoring task at hand.
The first point is her definition of a young adult. She asks: When does one cross the threshold into adulthood? The response of North American culture is ambiguous (4). Finding work and a spouse are still important, but the time required to become educated and increasing problem of downward mobility make it harder to become settled. The ambiguity and instability of the young adult situation in society are reflected in the greater challenge facing mentors, including parents.
The second point is reflected in her title. Young adulthood is a life-stage where the formation of meaning is particularly important. Parks writes: in the years from seventeen to thirty a distinctive mode of meaning-making can emerge, one that has certain adult characteristics but understandably lacks others (6).
The importance of challenging the young adult to take new faith steps is captured in her prescription–develop and expand a worthy, young adult dream. Parks writes: If the young adult Dream is to have mature power and serve the full potential of self and world, then it must be critically reexamined from time to time throughout adulthood (219). The role of mentors is to help the young adult craft, refine, and be true to this dream.
Parks writes Big Questions, Worthy Dreams in 10 chapters:
Young Adulthood in a Changing World: Promise and Vulnerability;Meaning and Faith;Becoming at Home in the Universe;It Matters How We Think;It All Depends…;…On Belonging; Imagination: The Power of Adult Faith;The Gifts of a Mentoring Environoment;Mentoring Communities; andCulture as a Mentor (vii).These chapters are bracketed by a preface and various references at the end. At the time of publication, Parks was an associate director at the Whidbey Institute near Seattle, WA [1]. She is now involved with an effort called the Leadership for the New Commons [2]. Formerly, she was with Harvard Divinity School and other noteworthy institutions.
The scope and depth of Park’s scholarship suggests that this book targets graduate students and professionals focused on counseling young adults. Most readers looking for advice on parenting are likely to find this book a challenging read. The gap between these two ready audiences suggests an opportunity for a follow up text focused on aid and comfort for the typical parents of young adults.
