Rat Boy Summer 2

Turned out Jacques was wrong when he said that only rats could live in the city. Because even the rats were having a hard time. The rain came and came — a whole fucking twenty-four hours straight. Nothing for months. And then bam, a whole fucking day of rain.

From time to time we got service. The internet came back and we'd get glimpses of news or we'd get texts or we'd get the weather report and we'd see that a foot of rain had fallen in one day.

Twelve fucking inches, Jacques said. Twelve inches...

Rat Boy Summer 1

For weeks there was no rain. Just an unbelievable pressure in the air. Hot, sweaty, sweltering, suffocating air. So wet and so heavy and so hot it was impossible to breathe. And it didn't happen.

All the trees in the city died. The grass brown and then white like a carpet of fishbones. The parks dried and cracked, the city couldn’t spend t...

Rooting for the Apocalypse - The Wedding (3)

Go to Chapter 1

Rooting for the Apocalypse began as series of vignettes, loosely based on my life and the lives of my fellow dirtbags living in Philadelphia. The nameless dirtbag serves as a protagonist, though he never learns anything, with some repeat characters like Zak and Athena. I wanted to combine the vignettes into a picaresque novel, but ultimately decided to spin it out into the novella bearing the title Rooting for the Apocalypse.

This is the second of two bonus stories, the fi...

My Flesh Is Not My Own

I’ve been updating the Substack images for No Dogs in Philly: A Cyberpunk Horror Noir and started having fun putting them together with some of my ambient tracks. The result is this — an experimental audiovisual piece that I hope instills a sense of eerie foreboding.

If you like it and want more, you can read the whole novel on Substack for free or get the free eBook from the link below. No Dogs in Philly is also available in paperback at most online retailers.

Dwayne

Dwayne had a mullet and a rat tail and a dumb accent and a chipped front tooth and a scrunched-up face full of freckles. He said the leather bag he brought to school was his dad's and that his dad had been a marine who'd been killed in the war and that it was better than a backpack. But it wasn't a backpack, and he didn't even have a trapper keeper, and all his books were used.

We knew our mission. We had to destroy him.

Second period, Preston got Dwayne on the floor and pinned his chest with his ...
