Catherine Maiorisi lives and writes in New York City.

Since she found her imagination, writing has been like meditating for Catherine and it is what she most loves to do. But she also reads voraciously, loves to cook, especially Italian, and enjoys hanging out with her wife and friends.

Catherine is the author of the NYPD Detective Chiara Corelli mysteries featuring Corelli and her partner P.J. Parker. There are currently four books in the series: A Matter of Blood, The Blood Runs Cold, A Message in Blood, and Legacy in the Blood.

I believe I was in the sixth grade when I realized I was a lesbian, but I don't think I knew then what to call it.

I was a voracious reader so when I was a little older someone gave me a box of books, mostly mysteries but it included The Well of Loneliness. That helped me to put a name to it and I began to read what I could find.

It's hard to say how being a lesbian affected my writing. While it is a basic part of my identity and the lens through which I see the world, I never thought much about it until I started writing. My first book was a mystery featuring a female NYPD detective who feels a visceral attraction to a potential suspect. I originally wrote that suspect as a man but it didn't feel right. Yet I fought it through a few drafts because I wanted the book to be a mainstream mystery. I'm happy to say, the pull to make her a lesbian and the suspect a woman was very strong and I changed her. Now I mostly write lesbian protagonists.

I usually have a novel and multiple short stories in process at the same time so if I get stuck on one project I simply skip to the next and write until I need to think about the next step, then switch back to the novel.(less)
