Thursday Name Puzzle

Round 2, ladies and gentlemen. Today, my main antagonist, Bram.

He is a character who I enjoy writing. He is a complete bad-ass. As one of my very good friends put it, “I just want to punch that fuck-face until he dies.” While I appreciate the extreme hatred my friend has for Bram, I also think the character is misunderstood. You will have to read and make your own decision whether you think he is someone who you want to die, or an “awe” moment with him. That’s up to you.

Now, behind the name. Bram means “raven”.  In Poe’s, The Raven the narrator loves someone who he can’t be with.  There are some parallels that could be drawn here. Symbolically the raven means death and evil. Do I believe Bram is evil? No. Does he do evil things? Absolutely.

A villain for me must have the following qualities: evil actions, true to self, and in some way- relatable. Bram kills people mercilessly and hunts humans for fun. Evil- check. He sticks to his values and ideals no matter how wrong they may seem. True to self- check. Bram had unfortunate events occur in his past. The reasons for his actions can be understood. Relatable- depends on you.

Everything depends on you. If you see people like Bram in the real world who aren’t doing the right thing, it’s all up to you. Speak up. Fight for what is right. Make a difference even if it is small. Hold the door open for those behind you. Pick up a piece of trash on the street. Smile at a stranger. Don’t be the “raven” in the world.
