Busy November, incoming!
November will be a very busy month for me, writing-wise. I have two new releases coming out: The Bloody City will be released on November 10th and One Night In Cleveland will be released November 18th. I will be doing lots and lots of promo for both.
I have three (three!) online book tours scheduled, though I don’t have set dates for these tours yet–I just know they’ll be happening. I will update you guys when I know more. I’m also doing a bunch of random guest blogs, including spots at ParaYourNormal, Cover Reveals, and the Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal RWA subchapter blog. The great thing about guest blogs and blog tours is that you can write the posts well in advance, so there’s no scrambling around. However, I’ll be doing a lot of self-promotion on social media for all these stops.
I’d like to do some giveaways here on my blog, too, to celebrate my release days. So I have to get those organized as well.
I’ll also be participating in this:
There will be tons of publishers, authors, games, and prizes, including a huge grand prize of a Kindle Fire. Stop on by!
I’ve been asked if I’m also going to participate in NaNoWriMo, and while I did briefly consider it like an insane person, I doubt I’d have enough time for it. I’m editing two projects and writing two other projects, so I’ve got plenty to work on without giving myself an additional deadline. On top of that, I have to go to my day job as well.
This is what I’ve always wanted as an author though, right?
November is going to be one wild month!

Swag on the cheap!
Last week I made a post about how darn broke I am. When you’re broke, you learn how to make do and find clever ways to be resourceful. That being said, I’d like to share one of my resourceful triumphs with you!
A couple weeks ago I learned about a sale Shutterfly was having–I follow blogs that offer freebies, samples, and coupon codes for various services/products, which was how I heard about it. Shutterfly is a photo printing service and I’d never used them before. However, I had a code to get 99 4×6 prints for free, all I had to pay was shipping (which was less than five bucks). I wasn’t sure how my book covers would translate to 4×6 photos, but I figured it was five bucks, I would give it a shot. So I uploaded all my book covers and had some made of each. They arrived today.
And they’re AMAZING!
The picture really doesn’t do justice to how clear, clean, and vibrant the quality is. The only downside is that you can only get a small bit of text printed on the back, which is pretty hard to read. I had (much more expensive) cards made for my first book which had information about the book and my website on the back (however, they weren’t even as good of quality as the pictures I got today):
I’m not going to complain for five dollars, though! When I hand them out I can just write information on the back. I think in November when my new book and my novella come out, I’ll do a giveaway and include some of them in prize packs.
And that’s how you be a thrifty author!

Starcrossed by Carla Caruso
Today I’m hosting Carla Caruso and her novel Starcrossed, a contemporary romance from HarperCollins Impulse. Carla is giving away three digital copies of her book, so make sure to comment, follow the tour, and enter the Rafflecopter giveaway!
Carla is also here today to talk about why she chose Australia–where I’d love to visit–as the setting for her book. Take it away, Carla!
Why I Chose Australia For My Book’s Setting
The short answer to this question is because I was born – and live – in Australia!
I’m from a small city called Adelaide in the south of Oz, which a lot of people say has the feel of a ‘big country town’ (although it’s home to about 1.6 million people).
I’ve also lived in glitzy Sydney, which is more well-known overseas, and the small SA beach town of Kingston SE when I first started out as a newspaper reporter. But Adelaide will always be the place I truly call home as it’s where my family and friends are.
Starcrossed is set in South Australia’s rugged Kangaroo Island, which is just off the state’s mainland and which visitors need to board a ferry to get to. I was inspired to set Starcrossed there after accompanying my photographer husband to the island on a work trip.
KI has just the right spooky, windswept, isolated sort of vibe for the novel, which mashes together contemporary romance, suspense, and magical realism. (For the horoscope junkies, there’s also a bit of an astrology theme – and a hunky hero with a scorpion neck-tattoo in the mix, too!) My mother-in-law grew up on the island, as well, and still has relatives there, so there’s also that connection.
The island has population of about 4200 and is known for its diverse wildlife and nature reserves including Flinders Chase National Park. At Cape du Couedic sit the striking granite formations, the Remarkable Rocks, and nearby is the rock bridge, Admirals Arch, with its adjacent fur-seal colony.
Some other fun facts about the island:
KI has the world’s only pure-bred and disease-free population of Ligurian bees, thus the exporting of pure-bred queen bees is a notable industry for the island.
Numerous ships have been wrecked on its craggy coastline, the largest being Portland Maru of 5865 tons, which sank in 1935. The first lighthouse built was erected at Cape Willoughby in 1852 – also the first lighthouse to be erected in South Australia as a whole.
Australia’s third-largest island – KI – boasts 30 wine growers and 12 wineries.
The island is also one of South Australia’s most popular tourist attractions, attracting more than 140,000 visitors per year, with international visitors, primarily from Europe, accounting for more than a quarter.
KI’s biggest town is Kingscote.
Keen for a bit of luxury? Kangaroo Island is home to the five-star Southern Ocean Lodge, which floats atop a secluded cliff on a rugged stretch of coast, offering unrivalled views of the Southern Ocean and the pristine wilderness.
Fledgling romance author Simona Gemella is hoping the rugged wilderness of South Australia’s Kangaroo Island will help reignite her creative spark after her husband walked out on her (calling her a workaholic and filing for divorce).
She’s joined her best friend, Nessie, on a health and wellness retreat at a mysterious old manor on the island, run by an astrology guru.
Though Simona’s sworn off men, she can’t help being distracted by a darkly dangerous man with a scorpion tattoo – Denham Cobalt – who’s also staying at the manor. Then strange things start to happen, including uncanny accidents and even a possible murder.
It all culminates at a masquerade party on the night of a total lunar eclipse. Will Simona survive – with her heart intact?
EXCERPT:
Simona woke with a start, her heart pounding. A dream featuring dark-eyed strangers and clawing scorpions had been interrupted by the sound of footsteps. Real ones. Growing closer. Not far from her bed. She could have sworn it. Although, the pitch black revealed nothing.
The noise had seemed to come more from the right side of the room, behind the wardrobe. Almost inside the wall. Which was ridiculous. She turned her head, peering into the darkness. 3:08 glowed in fluorescent green digits on the alarm clock radio.
Grasping the covers under her chin, Simona lay still, waiting for more, her ears pricked. Three glow-in-the-dark star stickers shone down from the ceiling. She imagined a travelling mum sticking them there to soothe their child, remind them of home. Unfortunately Simona needed more than that to placate her.
Aside from the occasional breathy snort from Nessie, though, silence reigned. Her friend had finally hit the pillow after kicking on to play pool with some backpacker. She had called Simona a stick-in-the-mud earth sign for leaving the pub early. Nessie always had a knack for making her feel dull.
Simona strained her ears. Still nothing. Her writer’s imagination had obviously conjured up the footsteps. Pity, as she had found it hard to get to sleep in the first place. Phone in her possession again, she had been kept up, mulling over a three-star Goodreads review from a writers’ group pal. Yup, three measly stars. Friends were meant to give you five stars, or four at least to look realistic. It was an unofficial rule.
But her supposed mate, who had hidden behind a code name (undone by the profile pic of her pet dog), hadn’t been so generous. She had written: I fell in love with the rugged hero and the unique story. The only shame was that some of the more intriguing plotlines weren’t further explored, sacrificed for the romance aspect of the book …
Um, it was a romance novel, hence, the emphasis on that particular component. Really. Of course, any criticism only hurt because she feared it was true: she was her own worst critic.
Then, just as Simona was drifting off, Nessie had crashed home, flicking on the lamp so that she could put on her so-called ‘lucid dreaming’ sleep mask. Another bizarre Nessie-style item. This one, she reckoned, helped encourage creative thinking. Though what Nessie needed it for, Simona didn’t know. Dreaming up more crazy holiday ideas? If anyone required it, it was Simona with her severe case of writer’s block.
And now? Now she was imagining things that went bump in the night.
Why oh why had she been fooled into believing going on holiday with a friend would be fun? It never was. She would have had more luck with inspiration striking at home. Where the internet was never far from her fingertips, and her thoughts weren’t clouded by no-good men.
Willing sleep to come soon, Simona unearthed an arm from beneath the doona and stretched to tap the bedside table three times. For luck — in case she wasn’t crazy and someone really was lurking about. Touching wood was a vice of hers. Nessie would probably say it had something to do with her being an earth sign and needing to be close to Nature. Really it just meant she was a tad OCD. Besides, the footsteps she’d heard before probably were just in her head — a symbol of her fear of being walked out on again.

The wild ride of life
I’ve had a lot of ups and downs this year. And I mean extreme ups and extreme downs. It’s been a rollercoaster ride. I’m really hoping 2016 will be a more even ride. I’ll take lower highs if it means things are a bit more steady–anything, as long as those downward dips aren’t as sharp!
A lot of amazingly good things happened to me this year. My debut novel came out in March, and has done well since then, is up for an award, and has been well-reviewed. My second novel comes out in November. So does a separate novella. I’ve had two other things published this year and I already have two things lined up to be published next year. I’ve also gotten stories into a few anthologies. Writing-wise, I’m doing better than I ever have in my life.
In my personal life there have been some good things too. I work at a ‘day job’ I love. I have a lot of good friends. I went on a few trips this year. I definitely can’t say I’m not surrounded by people who care about me.
But the lows have been extreme, too. I’ve had some relationship and terrible money issues I won’t go into, but I’ve had some major health-related issues this year as well. I’m going to preface this by saying I am NOT accident-prone, I swear! Before this year I can’t even recall a time in my life I suffered a significant injury from an accident. I rarely get sick. I don’t have any major health issues. Me and doctors are passing acquaintances.
Until this year.
In February, I slipped on ice and broke my wrist in two places. It was a fairly graphic, visible break and the aftermath was awful–I had no use of my right hand for four days while my arm was wrapped and in a sling until the cast could be put on (you can’t put a cast on a limb until the swelling subsides, otherwise the cast won’t conform). So, needless to say I wasn’t writing during that time. Then I was in a cast for five weeks and had to learn how to type around it. The cast came off the day after St. Patrick’s Day. My wrist healed well but I still have pain in it from time to time, I think it’s arthritic now.
Then in July my best friend took me to Las Vegas for my 40th birthday. On my actual birthday, after dinner, we were walking back to our hotel room and I tripped on my shoes and fell. It seemed like a minor fall at the time but it ended up causing such a severe knee injury I still haven’t recovered from it. The injury was extensive and it took over a month of medical care before it could even be minorly corrected, and I also suffered several infections and a brush with sepsis due to the extent of the injury. It’s still not completely back to normal and I have a slight limp.
Am I boring you rambling on about all this? The point I’m trying to make is that sometimes life is a mixed bag. For me, I always seem to get very bad and very good together. I can never just get a bag of awesome stuff with a few tiny negative things thrown in. I don’t know if this is coincidence or just how my life is fated. Maybe something out there thinks I can’t enjoy the super highs if I don’t experience the super lows.
How about you, how has your luck been this year? I’m wishing us all a 2016 with many more highs than lows, and if not that, at least an even keel.
I will leave you with a song by one of my favorite bands: Jump Rope by Blue October.

Happy horrifying birthday!
In the past month, two of my favorite authors had birthdays. Stephen King turned 68 on September 21st, and Anne Rice turned 74 (74!!!) on October 4th. This makes me feel tragically old.
Stephen King was the first author to get me into reading horror, and the reason I started writing. When I was young and naive I decided I wanted to be the next Stephen King and that’s why I started writing spooky/scary stuff. Or writing at all, really. I didn’t even KNOW I wanted to be a writer until I started imitating him. Well, all these years later, I can safely say I’ll probably never be Stephen King Pt. 2–largely because we don’t write the same genres but also because no one else can be Stephen King. He also got his big break at a much younger age than me (I’m still waiting for said big break at nearly twice the age he was when Carrie was published).
Still, Mr. King will always be one of my favorite authors. He recently received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama for his contributions to literature. How cool is that?
As for Anne Rice, she was the first horror author to strike a chord so deep in my young, impressionable heart I still feel it today. I picked u
p The Vampire Lestat, tattered and worn, at a rummage sale for 25 cents when I was 15 years old. I had never heard of Anne Rice or The Vampire Chronicles before that, but I was a dark and morbid teenager and the book had the word ‘vampire’ in the title. That book changed my life. I know 15 seems like a young age to absorb such intense material, but amusingly enough if she released the book today it would probably be lumped in the New Adult category. Lestat was 20 and struggling with the same sense of suffocating isolation and immobilization as I was at the time and it lit up my soul to read about a character facing the same struggle. His story of escape and accomplishment was my fondest fantasy and fever dream. I read the book slowly so it wouldn’t end and cried when it did.
I must say I was happy I found that book first, and didn’t read Interview With the Vampire (which is the first book in the series) before it, because they’re told from different character viewpoints and Lestat is painted in two very different lights in each book.
Anyway, the point of this post is to say Happy (belated) Birthday to two of my favorite authors! And also to express the boundless anxiety I have over their aging. Anxiety because I desperately want to meet both of them and, well…we know what the inevitable result of aging is. I won’t even say it because it hurts to think it. I already know what I’m going to say to Mr. King someday if (when!) I meet him…I just have to think up something to say to Mrs. Rice.
How about you? Have you ever met one of your favorite authors? Are you hoping to someday?

You gotta spend money to make money
This post is part of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group blog hop. The first Wednesday of every month is Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. The awesome co-hosts for the the October 7 posting of the IWSG will be TB Markinson, Tamara Narayan, Shannon Lawrence, Stephanie Faris, and Eva E. Solar!
I’m not going to lie to you, I’m broke as hell.
Most of my life is spent living hand-to-mouth. Paying my bills each month is a ‘will she or won’t she?’ sort of adventure. My cupboard is full of Ramen noodles. I don’t own a car, because cars are too expensive (but luckily I live in a big city with extensive public transportation). The fact I have internet and a laptop shows you my priorities–though I constantly have nightmares about my laptop dying and not being able to replace it. The words ‘expendable income’ sound like a punch line to me.
But I’m an author, and I need to self-promote. Uh oh.
Blog tours are expensive!
Ads are expensive!
Swag is expensive!
Do you think your publisher just ~gives~ you a whole bunch of your books to schlep around to appearances and sell to people? HA! (Unless you’re a huge name and they’re already making money hand over fist on you.)
A convention? In another city? Where I have to stay at a hotel? Buy swag/books for? And the entry fee is hundreds of dollars? DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH RAMEN THAT IS?
The truth is promoting yourself when you don’t already have a comfortable income isn’t easy. I’ve gotten a few (meager) royalty checks and mostly just turned them right back around into advertising/promotion. The theory is that someday your royalty checks will be big enough you can do that AND have money for bills and Ramen and maybe replace your laptop if it breaks down. To get bigger you gotta spend money, so you can make more money to get bigger. Until then…well, I’m really good at being poor.
‘Starving artist’ isn’t just a clever turn of phrase.

By the way, my novel The Wicked City is up for best urban fantasy at The Romance Reviews Readers’ Choice Awards. Being nominated was free for me, and it’s free for you to vote! I’d bribe you with cash, but well…want a pack of noodles instead?

Flicker by Courtney Houston
Today I’m hosting Courtney Houston and her paranormal romance Flicker. Her tour includes a chance to win a $5 Amazon or B&N gift card, so be sure to comment, enter the drawing, and follow the tour for more chances to win!
My name is Catalina Franklin. And I should be dead.
When Death called my number, sending one of her Guides to take my soul, she didn’t count on one thing. The Guide she sent – He was made for me, and I for him. Pulling me back from the arms of Death, Telor changed my fate – and his. Now we’re left with the question of not only how he’s still here, but why. Will we get the answers we need? Or will Death find us first? Only time will tell…but ours is quickly running out.
EXCERPT:
Telor surveyed my room with a sad resigned smile, stopping to look at my pictures, running his hand over one of the many porcelain dolls on a shelf next to my dresser. I wondered what he was thinking, or if he would tell me the truth if I asked. The urge to comfort him was almost unbearable. Walking quietly over to him, I wrapped my arms around his middle and pulled him to me, resting my head on his back.
“What’s the matter?” I asked.
“Nothing,” he answered, though his voice was far away. He might have heard the question, but he wasn’t listening.
“Liar,” I whispered. “Tell me.”
“Are you and your brother close?” he asked.
“We were. He’s dead,” I answered. I haven’t actually said that out loud for a long time. People were liars—it didn’t get easier. As much as it hurt to talk about Ollie, it hurt to watch Telor yearn for his lost ones more. Ones he never really got to mourn. “He and my dad died in a car accident when I was eight. Oliver was only seventeen; he was nine years older than me.”
“Your mum?” he asked, his voice had gotten thicker. “She’s still around?”
I let out a short bark of humorless laughter. “She’s still alive. But my mother has been gone for a long time. When they died, she drowned her sorrow at the bottom of any bottle she could find. I remind her of the family she lost, so she can barely stand to look at me.”

EXCERPT:
June ran to the hallway. She almost knocked on Sam’s door, but pushed it open instead. No time for politeness.
The room was muted in shadow, sparsely furnished like the other bedroom. Sam lay on one side of the double bed, on his stomach, in jeans and shirtless. Despite the news, June stopped short. The sinuous, dusky curve of his back and the span of his broad shoulders occupied her attention for a moment. He had his face turned away, and his hair scattered across the pillow, one arm dangling off the bed.
“Sam.” She touched his shoulder. His skin was warm and damp with sleep sweat. “Sam, wake up. Something is—”
Sam slept so close to the edge of the mattress with one arm dangling off it for a reason, apparently. Lightning fast, he snapped his head up, grabbed the shotgun on the floor—unnoticed by her until that moment—and flipped over, pointing the barrel at her.
She backpedaled, hands up. “Jesus Christ! It’s just me. Damn!”

THE BLOODY CITY
Sequel to The Wicked City
On the run…
It’s been four months since the head of the Institute of Supernatural Research was murdered. But that doesn’t mean June Coffin is out of hiding yet. In a world where being different can get you killed, it’s best to keep a low profile. Especially for a Siren who can control other people with the call of her voice. That goes double if your powers might be inexplicably growing…
On the hunt…
But June isn’t the only one trying to clear her name. There’s Sam, the charismatic paranormal rights leader, and Micha, the first human on record to go paranormal. All of them must bargain with a mysterious vampire named Occam Reed if they want to stay alive.
Out of time…
As tensions increase between humans and paranormals, June must decide who to trust. If only she could hear the song inside her heart…

Updates, contests, review copies
Today’s post is an update post, to make sure you guys don’t miss out on some contests and other things that will be ending soon. But first! I’m overly excited about something that might seem rather silly. A few days ago I got my publicity materials for The Bloody City (which will be releasing November 10th) and I found out my publisher put me in a real life magazine ad! The Bloody City is featured in an ad in the November 2015 issue of RT Book Reviews. I found a digital copy online (which you can access for free here, for a limited time) just to see what it looked like. Of course, I ordered myself some paper copies–I have to hold it in my hands!
It’s a big deal to me…I’m in a magazine! I’m worth throwing advertising money at! Yay!
And now, so you don’t miss anything:
Time is running out to enter to win a copy of The Bloody City on Goodreads. You have three days left if you want to enter. Go, go, go!
You can also request The Bloody City for review from NetGalley, from now until release day. If you run a review site and you want to review it, please contact me and I will send you a direct download link for NetGalley.
Last of all, I only have three days left to obtain four–JUST FOUR–nominations in order for The Wicked City to move on to the voting round of The Romance Reviews Readers’ Choice Awards. I should clarify, this is NOT the contest itself, but merely a nomination round to get into the contest, and I’m so, so close! If you think I’m worthy, I would deeply appreciate your nomination. You have to sign up for the site to nominate, which you can do here (you can also easily sign in with Facebook, G+, or Microsoft). And then click on the banner below (or here) to nominate the book by clicking the blue button above the cover. Easy! Everyone who gives me a nudge into the voting round is greatly, greatly appreciated!
