The Holy Experience of Watching Les Miserables
[image error]
Last week we watched the Tom Hooper production ofLes Misérables. We have all seen it live (in London, no less!) but I believe that the next best thing to a live performance is this movie.
I cannot see Les Misérableswithout crying. The story, full of redemption and grace, is timeless.
For those who don’t know the story, Les Misérablestakes place in 19th century France. While it is commonly thought to be about the French Revolution, it is actually a different insurrection in 1832 that was quickl...

Quotes on “Third Culture Kids”
The study of the third culture kid perspective is not static. Every year, new information and quotes can be found. I’ve compiled this short list of TCK quotes for you today. There are many, many more – but these are some that I have gathered or written the past few years. Please add to this list in the comment section!
“A British child taking toddling steps on foreign soil or speaking his or her first words in Chinese with an amah (nanny) has no idea of what it means to be human yet, let alone...

2017 – Making All Things New
[image error]
A couple of years ago, there was a show on television called Rehab Addict. It’s not what you may think from the title. It’s about a woman who takes old, dilapidated houses and rehabilitates them, makes them fresh and beautiful, ready to be lived in again. In her words, she is “addicted to rehab,” the kind of rehab that houses need.
The show is inspiring. She rarely uses anything new. She finds old cabinets and strips them, creating charm and style. She finds an antique door knob that isn’t w...

A Psalm for 2016
A Psalm for 2016 by Robynn(Based on Psalm 136 and written at Sister Irene Nowell’s suggestion)
2016 has been a difficult year. The entire globe can testify to this. War, terrorist attacks, the zika virus, political chaos, hacking and doping. Social contracts, that we’ve assumed to be universal, have been shredded. Nothing feels safe or reliable any more. We stand on shaky ground.
A couple of months ago I attended a workshop on the Psalms led by Sister Irene Nowell OSB. Sister Irene is an Ol...

Isolation or Exposure?
Is protection from God born, not of isolation, but of exposure?
We had been in Cairo only 2 weeks when our son Joel slipped and hit his head on the sharp edge of a bed. He sustained an open cutright above his eye. With Joel screaming and bleeding profusely, we somehow made our way to the emergency room in a hospital on the banks of the Nile.Akind doctor took care of the wound, sewing it up with tiny, precise stitches. And as I looked at those beautiful blue eyes of my son, his fear and pai...

Depression and the Third Culture Kid
[image error]
Six years ago I entered the office of my primary care doctor and burst into tears. I sobbed until I could not sob anymore. I sobbed until all that was left was a broken soul and no more tears. When I left the office that day, I left with red eyes, a red nose, and the exhaustion that comes with absolute honesty. I also left with a prescription for an antidepressant.
It was my friend Carol who finally insisted that I go. Carol knows what it is to be sad. She also knows what it is when the sadn...

The Eclectic Nativity Set
I’ve been a little lazy about Christmas this year. I did most of my shopping on the Internet (something I’ve sworn off of in the past). I delegated all the wrapping to our oldest daughter who seemed to actually enjoy it. I let the girls do most of the decorating this year too. We’re leaving for Ontario to celebrate with my family and it just seemed like too much work to put up a tree, let alone, to ‘deck the halls’. I’ve been rather ambivalent about the whole thing. (That’s the gentle way of...

To the Weary Ones
[image error]
No doubt you are up early. Whether traveling or staying at home, you have things to do, groceries to buy, errands to run, work to finish.
You love the season of Advent leading up to Christmas day, but you are so weary. The living room is finally clean, but the last few nights you have collapsed into bed in the room that has slowly and insistently collected all the clutter from the rest of the house.
The expectations. The stuff. The marketing – at first it’s fun, but as you face yet another l...

The Sorrow/Joy Continuum
[image error]
In an online conversation a couple of months ago, one of the women who is active at A Life Overseas said this:“Sorrow and joy can coexist under the umbrella of grace.”*
Moms and dads feel it. One kid rejoices with a a new job, while the other kid loses their livelihood. One daughter has a miscarriage, another rejoices in a birth. One child is brilliant, the other struggles with every learning task.
Medical professionals feel it – one person is diagnosed with cancer while another walks out o...

Foundations & Generations
[image error]
We traveled to Los Angeles this weekend for an early Christmas with our son and daughter in law. It was a beautiful weekend with sun and palm trees, the warmer temperatures a welcome change from an arctic freeze. Our East coast cold can chill the bones and the soul.
From eating our fill of great Mexican food to sharing an early Christmas, we made the most of our short time.
As parents, we watch our kids exit our homes to create homes of their own with nostalgia and some tears. Memories of to...
