Spoiler Alert!

Dear Beth,
Thank you so much for your question. I loved Fred throughout the book, too, and did not want him to die. That must seem like a strange thing for me to feel, having written the book. But the truth is that once a book gets going and once characters (including dogs) become real to me, they have a life of their own. In Fred's case, he was the family guardian. He loved them all and knew in his way that Margreete was more in need of help than anyone else. He had to follow her when she left the house that night, and he had no choice, given his good and helpful heart, but to stay with her until the end and to try to save her. Since he was an old dog, he quickly lost his energy, maybe even his bearings. I'm really sorry about what happened. He was a brave and loyal and wonderful dog, right to the end. I hope this helps.

All my best to you, and thank you for caring,
Eleanor(less)

“It's a fearful thing to love what death can touch.”
Eleanor Morse, White Dog Fell from the Sky

“We are doorways, openings into something greater than ourselves, something that we don't understand and will never understand. We have nothing precious in and of ourselves. We are only precious in that we are part of something that is too big to know.”
Eleanor Morse, White Dog Fell from the Sky

“By day, Ian was like the stars, there but not there. At night was when the beasts of grief came for her.”
Eleanor Morse, White Dog Fell from the Sky
