Surviving a Plague

frustratedboomers

Hey! Did you ‘fall back’ this morning? Remind me why we’re still doing this antiquated clock juggling in 2020. It makes no sense to me. The wild critters milling about on my lawn, without a manufactured care in the world, still wanted to be fed when the sun came up, no matter what time you wanna call it.

Germany’s Madame Tussaud Dumps Trump

I’m as full of election hysteria as a goose pre-pate – I’m about ready to burst.  We’re now three days before “the most important election of our time!” as it’s being called.

Get a grip, says I; all that’s on the line is democracy, human rights, and the fate of the planet, for pete’s sake.

Since I was a very lone dissenter in 2016 (I actually DID foresee trump winning) I hesitate to share my gut sense of what will happen with…

Rosie’s Review-A-Book Challenge #RRABC – How To Write A Review For A Book That You Didn’t Like

Some helpful advice on writing reviews.

Rosie Amber

Alison joins us today to talk about reviewing a book that you didn’t enjoy.

As part of Rosie’s Review-A-Book Challenge #RRABC, we continue our week of advice posts. See the link at the bottom of the page for details of the challenge and where you can sign up for a free book in exchange for a review.

Honest but fair – how to review a book you didn’t like

If you read books and write reviews, the chances are that you’re going to eventually be faced with writing a review for a book that you didn’t like. So what do you do?

Before you write and post that review, consider the following:

What didn’t you like? Be specific – was it the story itself? The characterisation? The plot? The pace?

Once you’ve nailed that down, ask yourself why you didn’t like that particular aspect or aspects. Was the plot too…

Remembering 1947

I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Frank Parker's author site

It is a cliché that our childhoods are filled with memories of warm summer days, rarely marred by bad weather. The summer of 1947 epitomises that notion for me and is one reason why I set my novel Summer Day in that particular summer.

In England the year began with heavy snow and bitter cold. I had turned five the previous November and should have started school at the end of the Christmas break.

Snow drifts had piled up against the ground floor windows of our cottage. Travelling the 3 miles to the village school was impossible. The thaw did not come until March. I entered school after the Easter break.

That exceptionally cold winter was followed by an equally exceptional summer. One not repeated until global warming began to make such summers common place in the UK.

But 1947 was extraordinary in other ways. The post-war Labour government had…

The Phone Call is my new short story in Mom’s Favorite Reads. A man risks death to get his life back.

A short story. The Phone Call by Val Tobin

Hunched into a crouch, Dylan shoved the kayak off the dock and into the water and then tilted back on his heels to catch his breath. The simple act of lugging the craft down the rocks and to the water had sapped what little energy he had. His muscles were still weak, his limbs scrawny.
