BayCon 2015: Saturday
BayCon 2015 continued…
Saturday morning started with the Pop Culture Princess (R)evolution panel. I’m not sure how I ended up on this panel, except that I have so many nieces under age 7 and I’m honestlycurious about the princess phenomenon. The questions from moderator ElizaBeth Gilligan and from the audience led to some lively comparisons of female characters with agency (Princess Leia) vs passive ones (Buttercup in The Princess Bride). We talked about the appalling dearth of racial and eth...

A sorely overdue missive about BayCon 2015
BayCon 2015 was waaaay back on Memorial Day Weekend. It’s stayed strong in my mind ever since, but have I posted my tiny little con noob thoughts? Nope.
But do let’s do the time warp.
So the BayCon fun started for me on Friday evening. After some bumbling around the Santa Clara Hyatt, I found the right room and was oriented by the giggly crew in charge of welcoming guests. The theme of the con was “Women of Wonder.” I liked how everyone’s badge said “hero.”
I spent an hour or so in the fan t...

The Klockwerk Kraken and Famous Tentacles in Literature
Today I am thrilled to host Aidee Ladnier, one of my favorite writers, whose intriguing new book The Klockwerk Kraken was just released. This book and I are clearly a match made in heaven, betweenmy love of things steampunk and my love ofthings seafaring. Aidee has insightsabout the tentacle in literature. I’ll let her explain.
Famous Tentacles in Literature
So my new novel, The Klockwerk Kraken, has a tentacled bartender. There, I’ve said it. I wrote a romance novel with a...

The Clockwork Kraken
Brand new in the world this very day! I am most proud to brag about The Clockwork Kraken by Aidee Ladnier, who will be a guest blogger right here in a few days.
In the meantime, be the first to take home your very own copy from the publisher.

I see the big kids posting these, so here’s my BayCon schedule (subject to con scheduling vagaries).

The Songbird Thief – coming in 2016
YOU GUYS. I signed a contract for my 2nd book, The Songbird Thief. It will be published by Harmony Ink Press in 2016. I’ll try to come up with more to say about that when I’m not so gobsmacked.

Dead in the Water review
The first thing you notice about Iona Whishaw’s Dead in the Water is the British style factor. You’re deep in 1940s farm country in fictional King’s Cove, British Columbia, but the cars and hats and witty dialog will make you miss an England you never had, where your stockings had seams and you put the milk in first for your tea.
On its face, Dead in the Water is a murder mystery, and boy is it satisfying. It’s page-turney. You’ll burn whatever you’re cooking. You fall for every red herring,...

Instant Attraction or Slow Burn? Michaela Rhua on her new book, Moon Dance
Today I am tickled to host Michaela Rhua, who is celebrating the release of her novel Moon Dance. Welcome, Michaela!
~
Thank you for having me on your blog.
How does it work for you? Are you the instant attraction type or do you need to take your time? My girls Raya and Amari both have their reasons for wanting to take it slow and easy but the thing with attraction is that when it hits – it hits! So what do you do? Be sensible and step back or jump in with both feet? The girls decide to jump in...

The 33 books of 2014
I don’t think I’m going to finish Sunshine by Robin McKinley before midnight on New Year’s Eve, so here it is, the list of books I read in 2014 as best I can remember. I did not keep excellent records of books read this year, nor is my Goodreads account any help, since I tend to add books willy-nilly as I remember that I read them, even if I didn’t read them this year. Just further evidence of my failure to operate social media according to its design.
There was a lot of comfort reading. Some...
