WARNING: Don’t read this review if you haven’t read the first nine installments of The Malazan Book of the Fallen

Introduction

After pushing myself through the first nine books, which are immensely long, I was looking forward to finishing off the series with The Crippled God. I was hoping for plenty of resolved storylines and badassery to ensue.

I was extremely disappointed with Dust of Dreams, but in Erikson’s introduction he had promised readers that book ten wo...

WARNING: Don’t read this review if you haven’t read the first four installments of The Malazan Book of the Fallen

Introduction

The point where I was at mentally before beginning MT is something we all know. I was super excited because the past three books in the series were kick-ass, but I was also terrified that there could be some drop-off in quality.

After I read the Dramatis Personae and saw that there was no Karsa but a plethora of Tiste Edur (and I wasn’t a...

WARNING: Don’t read this review if you haven’t read the first three installments of The Malazan Book of the Fallen

Introduction

Book two was the shit. Book three was even the shittier.MoI was full of all the things that make me love Malazan–massive armies, insane gods, and epic action.

House of Chains sounded like an awesome book title, and I was super stoked to be reading it. High hopes abounded.

World – 5/5

While we start off on Genabackis, most of the book takes...

WARNING: Don’t read this review if you haven’t read the first two installments of The Malazan Book of the Fallen (Gardens of the Moon and Deadhouse Gates)

Introduction

Book one was bad. Book two was awesome. Naturally I was rooting for book three to be awesome, and I was really excited for it, especially after the crazy epic ending of DG with Coltaine, although it made me pretty sad. Interesting side note–part of me wonders if Erikson killed him off because he wa...

WARNING: Don’t read this review if you haven’t read the first installment of The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Gardens of the Moon

Introduction

Coming into this book I had just finished Gardens of the Moon and my expectations weren’t the highest. My friend, who had gotten a bit ahead of me in the series, told me that book two was awesome compared to book one, so I found that at least to be promising. The first book ended on a good note, even if the appearance of th...

Introduction

(Before you make a decision on this book I recommend you read my conclusion, even if you choose to skim over the rest of the review. Please note that this review [until the conclusion] does not take into account my having read at present the entire series.)

I had just finished A Song of Ice and Fire and I was starving for more fantasy in the same vein. Fewof my friends had read as much as myself, so I took to google and searched for the best-reviewed...

Introduction

For this review in particular I would strongly recommend you check out my review policy before continuing.

When I finally picked up this book I was extremely excited, and there were two main reasons why. For one, I’d heart about the premise behind the book much earlier–namely that all the old gods/fantasy creatures we’ve ever believed in actually existed. As an idea that sounds like pretty much the coolest plot someone could come up with, so I’d want...

Introduction

Before I read this series all I knew was that the tv-show A Game of Thrones, which I’d never seen, was based on it. Just that it was turned into a tv-show set my expectations pretty low, and coupled with the somewhat cheesy cover art and bestseller status of the books I snubbed it like the prissy fantasy snob that I am.

However, people wouldn’t stop talking about the damn thing, and my friends that had started the first book were nagging me to read i...

WARNING: Don’t read this review if you haven’t read the first four installments of A Song of Ice and Fire—A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, and A Feast for Crows.

Introduction

So, not only were my expectations for this book extremely high, but my hopes were as well, especially after having been disappointed by A Feast for Crows. I need to point out that it wasn’t a bad book by any stretch of the word, but it paled in comparison to the prior...

A Painting by Nectarhoff the Elder

Today I was at the Art Institute of Chicago checking out the Magritte exhibit for a second time before it leaves the museum. It's hands down my favorite exhibit I've ever seen, and it reminds me of this painting my dad made that hangs in my bedroom at my childhood home. In a way it encapsulates everything that I saw today. What Magritte was so great at--what he brought to the world of art--was a profound questioning of the real and the unreal, of the distinction between dreams and waking life...
