Weird Science - SFRB Summer Cafe - Week 2

Host sites are SFR Brigade and SFRStation My post for Weird Science is about the world of Grand Master’s Pawn
The young empath Violet Hunter becomes the pawn of a Grand Master. Her story switches from Terra to diverse planets reached through the portal web. The staple foods on Terra are algae bars from Mars and krill cakes from aquafarms on Europa. Wealthier people can enjoy many familiar foods teleported from agricultural planets that were terraformed and colonized by humans. Mostly, Violet lives on nutrient bars when she travels on her missions. The dragon’s food was not very palatable and she tried native tubers and grubs prepared by the Gray Folk on Cinerea.
Chicken Recipe for Main Course
This meal can be prepared in an iron pot over an open fire or on a stove heated by a fuel cell. The ingredients are readily available on the majority of terraformed planets colonized by humans.Simple and delicious!
Ingredients: chicken pieces (skinned), one onion, one apple, one stick of celery, a cup of stock and a cup of cider (hard), oil, flour.
1. Drench chicken with flour and brown in oil. 2. Dice onion, apple and celery and saute until soft. 3. Throw everything into a pot with the liquids, cook for 1 hour and season to taste.
Recipe to become a Grand Master The twelve Grand Masters claim to have the greatest psychic powers in the galaxy. To achieve that status involves:1. Inherit the potential for psi talent. 2. Learn to control and strengthen your talent. (Training has been prohibited for the past 20 years.)3. Survive an initiation ordeal. (Horrible and painful, but the details are secret.)4. Implant one or more enhancers to amplify aspects of psi power. (Optional and probably painful.)
Remember to shield your power near ordinary people to avoid knocking them unconscious or killing them.

Grand Master’s Pawn
Who are the most powerful entities in the galaxy?
The twelve Grand Masters claim that exalted status. Their psychic power is deadly to an ordinary person and they prohibit the training of new psychics.
Twenty-two year old Violet Hunter dreams of exploring unknown planets. One Grand Master selected her as his pawn, unaware of her hidden talent. Violet sees only the griffin avatar for instructions on her missions to exotic planets. She discovers the mysterious Grand Masters are not the benevolent leaders she had believed. They are suspects in the deadly epidemics sweeping the galaxy and the new problem of breaks in the interplanetary portal web. Violet hunts for the culprits, finding clues and strange allies in her missions as a pawn. While seeking the truth, Violet does the unthinkable. She risks her secret to bargain with her obnoxious Grand Master and enters a world of vicious conflicts. Pursued by hostile aliens and Grand Masters, they must learn to combine their talents to survive their enemies.
In this excerpt, her Grand Master has brought her to his castle to avoid his enemy. They share a mental link due to a lucky accident. He is very happy she is not knocked out on exposure to his full power.
ExcerptViolet tilted her head and gazed into the blue glow of his eyes. Her voice acquired a plaintive note, “Do you have any food in your castle? We’ve run and climbed all day. I’m starving and need to eat, even if my Grand Master doesn’t require food.”
“Yes, my hungry pawn, what do you wish to eat?” His silent laughter rippled in her mind.
Her eyes twinkled merrily, and she said, “Bread and wine and thou!” His lips met hers and the flame of desire warred with the growl of her empty stomach. “Food first,” she insisted, pushing him away gently.
“Your wish is my command, delightful pawn!”
“Oh, a joke,” she quipped. “I like you even better!”
“Come!” he took her hand and led her to a seat by the low table. A loaf of bread and round of cheese were on a platter. A wine bottle appeared in one of his hands, and two glasses in the other. “We’ll celebrate,” he proposed. The cork popped out at a touch of his fingers and he poured the ruby hued wine.
Violet munched steadily through the food. “The bread is warm. Where did you get freshly baked bread?” she asked with her usual curiosity.
“From the kitchen,” he said with a twitch of his lips. “I did not create it from air.”
She frowned, “Who baked it?”
“We were lucky. Zoe had made a fresh batch of loaves. Now they will know I’m home.”
“Are they your servants, Athanor?” She was interested to learn how he lived.
“I prefer to call them caretakers. Jamail Jackson and his wife Zoe live in my castle. Jamail was my pawn for several years until he suffered a debilitating injury.”
“I’d like to meet them. Will they be surprised to see me?”
He smoothed her hair and his eyes sparked. “Visitors are rare. They’ll be astonished to see a lovely young woman as my guest.”
A strident buzz interrupted and Athanor stiffened. “Blast Odin’s eye, why can’t they leave me in peace?” Removing his arm from her shoulder, he tapped his wrist bracer and scanned the display. His brows compressed into a thick black line.
Violet realized the leather bracer contained a com. “What is it?” she said, wondering who would dare to call a Grand Master.
Athanor snarled, “The Chairman has convened an emergency meeting of the Council this evening.”
The icy stream of his wariness rolled through her, and she gasped, “What emergency?”
He grimaced, “No reason was given.”

8-10 sentences for Weekend Writing Warriors - Grand Master's Pawn #3

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers showcase their work with 8-10 sentences. This week, I’ll continue the scene from Grand Master’s Pawn. Pursuing her dream to explore exotic planets, Violet has applied to become the pawn of one of the Grand Masters, beings of immense psychic power. She has hidden her talent of empathy, since psychics are banned from becoming pawns. I’ve included one sentence from last week’s snippet.
Yet in the next moment, his eyes slid slowly past, and she doubted he had even noticed her.She stiffened in alarm and shielded, hoping to conceal her psychic power. The eerie vision of the twelve entities vanished as swiftly as it had arisen. Surely, she had perceived the mysterious Grand Masters in the transient image. She blinked, returning to the reality of the interview room with the lighted spheres on black cylinders. The mechanical voice called, “You have been chosen. Walk through the exit on your right.” Violet grinned and raised her fist in triumph. She had succeeded in the first step of her risky venture. As a pawn, she could study her Grand Master and pursue her dream of exotic travel.

Another snippet from WIP for #SFFSat -Grand Master's Game 3

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy snippets exchanged by writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ My contribution this week continues the excerpt from my WIP, Book 2 in the Grand Master’s Trilogy, the Grand Master’s Game.
Excerpt The Grand Master pointed a finger at the metal box on the desk and demanded, “What is the purpose of that noisy contraption?”
Phineas gulped, “It’s my invention. An instrument to detect psychic power.” He patted the shiny top of the box. “Did you break it?” “You are fortunate. I merely located the off switch,” Athanor said as the blue beams from his eyes played over the box. “How could you touch the switch from the other side of the office?” Tessa’s voice was shrill. The Professor gulped again and muttered, “My dear Tessa, he is a Grand Master.” “Just so. I suggest you keep your detector well away from Council Hall.” The room vibrated with the ominous undertone. Violet giggled. She caught Athanor’s blue gaze and sent, “Show off!” He tossed her an image of the box exploding on exposure to the full power of twelve Grand Masters.

8-10 Sentences for #WeWriWa - Grand Master's Pawn 2

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers showcase their work with 8-10 sentences. This week, I’ll continue the scene from Grand Master’s Pawn. Pursuing her dream to explore exotic planets, Violet has applied to become the pawn of one of the Grand Masters, beings of immense psychic power. She has hidden her illegal talent of empathy. I’ve included one sentence from last week’s snippet.
The hazy image resolved into twelve people seated on thrones, human men and women and alien creatures. Their eyes glowed in the colors she had seen on the spheres. One alien was a mass of writhing tentacles, while another resembled a green blob. One humanoid woman wore red robes, another woman had a green gown, and two men were clad in somber black robes.
In the midst of this amazing sight, her attention was caught by a dark man in blue robes seated at one end of the twelve. He had a grim face with fierce black eyebrows over a hooked nose. His eyes were half lidded. While she watched, his eyes opened and blue beams flashed out, piercing into her face. She stared boldly into his laser blue eyes. Yet in the next moment, his eyes slid slowly past, and she doubted he had even noticed her.

#SFFSat Snippet 2 from WIP Book 2 in Grand Master's Trilogy

Welcome to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy snippets exchanged by writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/ My contribution this week comes from my WIP, Book 2 in the Grand Master’s Trilogy, Grand Master’s Game. I'm continuing from last week, with a 2 sentence overlap.
Excerpt
Athanor’s gaze flicked to the box and the clicks halted abruptly.
Tessa gasped and clutched at her chest.
Violet called, “Stop! Mute your power or Tessa will faint!” The pressure lessened and his eyes dimmed to a faint blue glow.
The Professor paled beneath his tan. Tessa squeaked and fled to the comforting arms of her fiancé.
“It is all right, Tessa,” Phineas said in a shaky voice. “He does not mean to harm us.”
“You’d be dead!” The Grand Master’s mental snarl reached Violet, and she restrained the urge to give him a mental kick. In her opinion, a friendly approach would serve him better. The two people trembling behind the desk were not the enemies he wished to crush in a blast of power.
The Grand Master pointed a finger at the metal box on the desk and demanded, “What is the purpose of that noisy contraption?”
Phineas gulped, “It’s my invention."

New Release - Backlash by S.A. Hoag
Backlash
is the prequel novella to The Wildblood series by S. A. Hoag. Set on a near-future Earth mostly devoid of humans, this reveals some of the harsh realities facing people of The Vista, and how Team Three began.
Blurb
Before Team Three became Team Three, there was The Blackout.
Vista Security is used to the feral bands of humans wandering the landscape since a brief and devastating war wiped away civilization. Sixteen years later, they've adapted to dealing with the challenges facing their safe haven.
That is, until a new threat appears, one they never expected and one they have little defense against. Security throws in everything they can muster; it quickly takes a toll. Their advantage - an untested team of officers barely more than children themselves; officers with dark secrets and a hidden agenda.
In a free-for-all battle to preserve one of the last sanctuaries of man, Team Three discovers their secrets are their strength and that their future will take them far beyond what they've ever known.
Action, a bit of romance and a good splash of sci-fi set the scene for Backlash , the prequel novella of The Wildblood series.
Excerpt~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ “Shannon,” her radio crackled static, snapping her out of a restless sleep. It was Wade on his private channel.
“Go ahead,” she answered groggily. Her watch read 9:30 pm and she was supposed to go on duty at 2:00 am. An hour – she'd been asleep an hour.
“Gear up. I'll be there in five minutes to get you.”
“What's going on?” she wondered, rubbing her eyes.
“Don't ask, just do.”
He didn't sound like they might be playing wargames. Shan moved.
Her mother was in the kitchen. Deirdre Allen was five foot three, with pale blondhair, hazel eyes, and was one of The Vista's actual doctors. She'd been twenty-nine when civilization ended. “The hospital just called me in,” she announced. “Are you on-call?”
“I am now. Wade didn't tell me why.”
War games?
“No,” Shan told her. “Not this time. I know you don't like carrying, but I think this is serious. Take a sidearm, Mom, please.”
Deirdre nodded. “For your peace of mind I will.” She knew how to use it; she'd been forced to in the past and hoped she never would again. “Whatever it is, be careful.”
“I am, and Wade wouldn't let me get away with anything else.”
She hugged her. “I mean it.”
“I'll see you in the morning,” Shan said, hearing a car. “That's Wade. If he tells me it's practice, I'll let you know.” She didn't think it was likely, but he'd fooled her before.
The moment she dropped into the passenger seat, she knew it was real. “Can you tell me now?” She'd dressed in winter camos with body armor, both Sigs and a boot gun, clips in all her pockets, plus an array of knives. Her pack held spare ammo, food rations and various bits of survival equipment.
He glanced sideways at her, heading towards Station Two with a purpose. “We lost a Scout at Wisdom about an hour ago.”
“Lost?” she repeated, not expecting it.

The Hardest Love by Liza O’Connor

The trouble with rescuing damsels in distressOver this series, Sam has saved several young women.

In book one, he saved Dawn, a waitress from his bar, from a serial rapist. And for a while she proved grateful, but then she got jealous because he kept rescuing Carrie all the time. So she quit her job and left him, but only after she pummeled him a bit.

He was constantly rescuing Carrie. The last time he saved her, he expected it to cost him his job, since he saved her from Trent, who attempted to force himself upon her.And was she grateful? Not at all. They fought over a stupid brush, then she stormed off and fell in love with a guy closer to her height.

So he got mad and stormed off to Denton Iowa where he saved Dani from being kissed by what looked to be a real life Hulk. And for a while she was grateful. But she failed to mention she was a virgin.Who remains a virgin at 24?Her innocence meant he had to go to the local pro for certain pleasures.Turned out Dani and the Pro were arch enemies from High School, resulted in Dani turning to his friend Trevor. He swears off damsels in distress, declaring them terribly ungrateful. After rescuing Carrie yet again, he returned home to Mar’s new Sanctuary for Vets and meets a young woman who is six foot, powerful, doesn’t wear makeup, has hair shorter than his, and NEVER wears dresses.

She is unlike any woman he’s ever met. She calls to the man he used to be, before he broke, the man he desperately wants to be again. However, when they first meet, he assures her he would never spar with anyone already burdened with the name of Aggie. In response, she took him down.

The Hardest LoveA Long Road to Love SeriesBy Liza O’ConnorBLURB
THE HARDEST LOVE IS TO LOVE YOURSELF.Sam has a new theory as to why his relationships with women never work. The problem is he’s constantly falling in love with women that he rescues from serious situations. He reasonably believes saving one from great harm should result not only in good sex afterwards, but never ending gratitude. But it hasn’t been working out that way. Sam’s conclusion: damsels in distress are incredibly ungrateful. So he decides the next woman he gets involved with will not require rescue. She will be strong and self-reliant. Only problem: he’s never met a woman like that. They do exist Sam. They really do. And just maybe, she’ll just rescue you instead.
EXCERPT“Well, if you want cheered up on my days off, I’d be glad to kick the hell out of your demons.”Her comment brought Sam to a halt. No way would Mars share his history with his new staff. So who did? Carlos? A second later, Aggie pulled up and returned to him. After an intense stare down, as if she were reading his mind, she ruffed up his hair, which had probably been pre-ruffled since he forgot to brush it before leaving. “I was offering to spar with you.”That wasn’t happening. “Sorry, there are only a few people I can safely spar with. I would never risk hurting someone already debilitated with the name of Agnes.”He couldn’t wait to see how she took his refusal. Inexplicably, he hit the floor hard a second later and her foot pressed on his neck.“Easy!” he yelled. She gleamed with pride at her achievement, which had been nothing more than a lucky, underhanded blow. When she removed her foot and reached down to help him up, he grabbed her hand, intending to flip her onto her back so she could appreciate how hard the floor was. Incredibly she managed to deflect his every move. Finally, by feigning a move which required her to respond by shifting her balance, he yanked her down onto his chest. She laughed. “You are too good not to realize that was a bonehead move if I wanted to kill you. So, I’m thinking you’re tired of sparring and wish to try something else.”Her gorgeous smile hovered inches above him. Her strong body pressed against his. Feeling a need to possess her, he gripped the back of her head and brought her lips to his as he rolled her over, so he was on top.Just as his brain was about to overheat from one of the finest kisses he could recall, a familiar throat clearing doused his fire. He broke away and helped her up before facing Mars. “This was totally my doing. I knocked her off her feet and kissed her.”After a stern glare at Sam, Mars turned to Aggie. “Are you all right?”“I’m fine,” she said, all the while smiling. “Do you want to press charges?”She stared up at the ceiling, considering the matter. “I’m off duty today and tomorrow. Can we have Samconfined to my quarters?”

Weekend Writing Warriors - first snippet from Grand Master's Pawn

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers showcase their work with 8-10 sentences. This week, I’m starting a scene from Grand Master’s Pawn. Pursuing her dream to explore exotic planets, Violet has applied to become the pawn of one of the Grand Masters, beings of immense psychic power. She has hidden her illegal talent of empathy.
An artificial voice called, “Candidates will walk onto the stage, one at a time, and stand still for evaluation by the Grand Masters.”
One brave candidate stepped up, nearly stumbling in his haste. He stood silently for a few minutes before he was dismissed to the left exit. Her tormenter, Marius, strode to the front, and was dismissed even faster than the first candidate.
Violet compressed her lips and stepped forward, resolved to take her chance. She stood erect and stared at the row of lighted spheres. An uncanny vision wavered before her eyes, and she tensed, holding her breath in awe. The hazy image resolved into twelve people seated on thrones, human men and women and alien creatures.

Snippet for #SFFSat from WIP, Book 2 in the Grand Master's Trilogy

Excerpt
Athanor strode into the room and looked around with a proprietary air, as if he was examining one of his establishments. When she entered, Violet noticed a regular series of slow clicks emerging from a metal box on the desk. Phineas stood up politely, and Violet hid her amusement at the contrast between the two men. Even disguised and shielded, Athanor exuded an air of authority tinged with menace, while the professor was a bright-eyed academic, brimming with curiosity. Tessa stepped into the office and cried in her nervous high-pitched voice, “Oh, Phineas, I didn’t realize you had visitors.” Her beautiful face brightened on recognizing her friend, Violet, and Tessa ran to hug her. Athanor frowned at the interruption and the door slammed shut, leaving an unnatural silence. Tessa stared intently at his saturnine face, which radiated confident pride despite his disguise. Her eyes widened in shocked insight and she yelped, “Violet, he’s your Grand Master!” They all stared at Athanor. His figure appeared to grow taller and darker. The room filled with psi pressure and blue rays flared from his unveiled eyes. Simultaneously, the clicks from the box sped up until their volume reached a shattering crescendo. Athanor’s gaze flicked to the box and the clicks halted abruptly. Tessa gasped and clutched at her chest.

New Release - Croceus Poison by KG Stutts
How far would you go to get back what you lost?
The second installment in KG Stutts’s Amethyst Chronicles launches on Friday!

Synopsis:
Ember Wilson lost it all when she lost her Amethyst transformation. Her abilities, her team, and her self-confidence seemed to vanish with her purple eyes. She has to find out who she is when she's not Amethyst. Her internal conflict will tear at those who care the most.
Through her soul searching, she pushes everyone away. She's afraid to accept herself, let alone the love of the men who desire her. When a lead to resolving her situation is presented, she will risk everything to follow it. In the end, is Amethyst worth risking her heart?
Excerpt:She gripped the staff with both hands, moving to strike Lewis’s wrists. At the last second, she flipped it up and struck him on the side of his head. Lewis stumbled back, cursing and sputtering. She didn’t give him any time to recover before moving in. But he was ready for her tactics. The end of his weapon hit her mouth, busting her lip open, before swinging down and hitting the back of her knees. Ember fell on the mat, the air rushing out of her body as her staff fell out of her hands and rolled away. Lewis stood over her with his staff pointed at her face.
“And that’s three,” he said.
She looked up at him, breathing heavily. Her head pounded and sweat rolled down her face. She touched her lip and frowned at the red droplets of blood on her fingertips.
“So it is.”“Are you okay?”
She nodded. He tossed the staff aside and extended his hand, moving so she could get up. He gently touched her chin and frowned.
“I didn’t mean to bust you open.”“It’s a tiny cut.”“Looks pretty deep to me.”“Only because you’re used to me healing already.”“It’s going to take a while to get used to you not being -” He stopped, sucking in a sharp breath as she raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest.“Me not being what? Finish your sentence.”He rubbed the back of his neck. “I can’t.”“Finish your sentence,” she ordered.“Not being purple,” he said, letting out a haggard breath.
She smacked his hand away and walked toward her clothes.“Come on, Wilson. You know I’m sorry.”
She snorted as she pulled on her pants. “Of course you are. Everyone is. The doctor is sorry he didn’t catch the croceus poison before it nearly cost me my life. The nurse is sorry she aided in the blood transfusion. My father is sorry I can’t rejoin my military commission. Commander Stewart is sorry he can’t recreate the procedure. Liam is sorry he can’t understand what I’m going through.” She spun around, fire raging in her eyes. “And I’m sorry I let myself wallow in misery. But I’m not sorry anymore. Now I’m just angry!”
She stormed out of the training room, leaving her shirt on the floor and Lewis alone with his jaw hanging open. She brushed past the people in the hallway, not caring about the gawking looks she got for walking away in her bra.
