New Release - Bodies in Motion by Liana Brooks #SciFiRom

 BiM
Bodies in Motion - Releases September 19th
Tag line: A civil war tore them apart. Can a cold war bring them back together?
Blurb: Selena Caryll lost everything in the war: her ship, her crew, her family. The only thing keeping her going is the hope that somehow the feuding, ground-bound settlers and the fuelless space fleet can set aside their differences. But getting the politically-fractured fleet moving again is more than she can manage alone. For now, she has to settle for working undercover with the planetary police force.
When someone tries to reignite conflict between the planet-siders and the fleet, there’s only one person who has the rank and ability to help Selena protect the fleet: Titan Sciarra, Fleet Guardian—the one man she’s tried hardest to avoid since the war destroyed her life.
In a world where the stagnant weight of tradition can be as deadly as any knife, the only way to survive is to keep moving.

Behind The Title:Newton’s First Law of Motion states “A body in motion will stay in motion until acted on by an outside force”. We usually think of this in terms of physics, physical objects, and friction but it applies to choices and lives too. Often a person will set their course and stay on it unless acted on by something external force, even if the destination is catastrophic. For Selena Caryll her course is a downward spiral, she’s lost everything and has no future to look forward to. For Titan Sciarra his life was headed for an early death until he was shot down in the war, the subsequent injuries and his absence from the battle lines allowed him to change direction. In a world where two stagnant cultures are on a collision course with mutual destruction it will take something extraordinary to change the world. And what’s more extraordinary than love?

Why did you write this book?  Many, many years ago when I was trying to take a mental break from the Time and Shadows series I decided to try writing Harry Potter fanfic. I was fascinated by the isolation Hermione had at the end of the series, how she’d given up every aspect of her muggle life to become part of something else. And I wondered if she’d ever want to go back to MP3 players, smartphones, and democracy after fighting to live in the hyper-controlled world of the witches. Needless to say… I don’t appreciate Harry Potter well enough to write good fanfic in that universe and the idea quickly spun out of control. I kept thinking of magic in terms of science, implants for wands, crews instead of Hogwart’s houses. I took the threads of the story and started to write NEWTON’S CRADLE, and realized I’d jumped too far ahead in the story for it to make sense. So, I went back and tried to figure out where I needed to start. Not with the war, because wars are boring, but with the fallout of the war. How do you rebuild cultures and trust and friendship after something as awful as a civil war?How do you forgive someone who fought against you because they thought it was the only way to survive?BODIES IN MOTION is the catalyst for change, it’s the pivot point where everyone in this universe gets a second chance at making the right choice.

Breached hull - snippet for #WeWriWa #SciFi #romance

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories.
I’m posting snippets from my WIP set on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. It is the first book in a new series, extending from our solar system into the galaxy.
Current Tag line: What alien creatures lurk under the ice crust of Europa?
Here are the next few lines of Chapter one. Dr. Nikki Bell is traveling to Europa to study the alien life in the ocean. Alarms rang on her spaceship and she has raced to the lifepod. Nobody else is there.  It’s not a final version and any suggestions will be especially appreciated. You can read my last snippet here: https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/09/where-was-everybody-snippet-for-wewriwa.htmlI’ve skipped a couple of lines.
The incessant blare of the alarms revved up her stress level until the wait seemed interminable. At last, she heard voices outside and a scrape at the door. It swung open and Roy stumbled into the cabin, his right arm hanging limply at his side. Alita and Petris followed, already in their suits and carrying helmets. Petris toted an extra spacesuit over his shoulder. “This section is sealed off,” Petris said, between pants of breath, “the hull must be breached in three or five.” Tears poured down Alita’s pale cheeks. “I don’t know what happened to Karl,” she moaned, “he’s behind the barrier. When we left the gym, he went to section five to fetch a snack from the food dispenser.” “Did you see anyone else?” Nikki asked.
Blurb:Dr. Nikki Bell’s plan to discover intelligent life in the oceans of Europa hits a rocky start when her spaceship crashes, stranding her alone on the icy surface of the moon. Seconds before she blacks out, she spies a man’s face in the water beneath the ice. When she wakes on the submarine Station, nobody believes her story. The residents of the fledgling colony have their own problems. The senior biologist is missing, and they must accommodate survivors from the crippled ship until the next ferry arrives in fifteen months. Convinced the mysterious stranger saved her life, Nikki searches for him while she explores the ocean and its alien inhabitants. Kiron Arqin Ramis chose exile as a Watcher on a remote outpost to redeem his family’s honor. He never expected to find an attractive Earther woman close to death. He violates the prime policy by rescuing her. His gamble fails. Despite suffering the penalty, he strives to warn her about his hostile leaders. Nikki’s second accidental meeting with Kiron confirms their fate, and catalyzes a chain of disasters amid the perilous waters. Can they overcome deadly threats from submarine predators and their peoples’ antagonism to forge a new alliance?
If all goes well, I hope to put the book up for pre-order soon.

Where was everybody? Snippet for #WeWriWa #SciFi Adventure

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors . Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories.
After a hiatus of two weeks while traveling in Europe, I’m returning to my WIP set on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. If you are interested, I’ve set up a blog post on sightseeing in Lyon, France - https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/09/cheapskates-guide-to-lyon-france-travel.html
Current Tag line: What alien creatures lurk under the ice crust of Europa?
Here are the next few lines of Chapter one. Dr. Nikki Bell is traveling to Europa to study the alien life in the ocean. It’s not a final version and any suggestions will be especially appreciated. You can read my last snippet here: https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/08/what-styx-snippet-from-wip-for-wewriwa.html
Nikki staggered to the rack of spacesuits on the wall by the airlock. She selected the correct size, and climbed awkwardly into the bulky spacesuit, balancing against the juddering of the ship. Pulling an emergency kit from the shelf, she entered the inner airlock and fumbled at the door handle of the lifepod. She flung the door open, climbed into the cabin and dropped into the pilot’s seat. Panting with relief, she looked around. Where was everybody? The lifepod was sized for six people. She must be the first to reach its safety. Surely Alita and Karl would arrive soon. She had left them in the gym only minutes before the alarm sounded.

Cheapskate’s Guide to Lyon, France #Travel #Budget

View of Lyon from Roman ruinsMy husband and I recently had an opportunity to spend a weekend sightseeing in Lyon, France. Lyon is situated near the confluence of the Saone and Rhone rivers. Like most European cities, Lyon has an excellent public transport system. Armed with a map of the subway lines and a two-day ticket, we ventured throughout the city. All the sites we visited were free. These descriptions may give you ideas of what to see in Lyon.   Streets in FourviereThe travel pass gave us access from the subway to the funicular train to the hill at Fourviere. On our first day, we descended from the hill through the extensive Roman ruins with two amphitheaters. Many people were visiting the ruins and climbing over the low walls. Roman ruins

The weather was hot and muggy and few buildings had air conditioning. Cathedrals, in addition to the stained glass windows, ornate ceilings and carved pillars, had the great advantage of being cool.
Notre Dame de Fourviere is lighted at night.

The Cathédrale Saint-Jean houses a famous astronomical clock that has kept time and tracked the paths of the sun, moon and stars since the 14th century.

Next day, we visited the Parc de la Tete D’Or. This park was popular with local families with its free access to a botanical garden and a small zoo. The tree-lined avenues offered welcome shade and people boated in small lakes.   Avenue leading to Parc de la Tete D'Or

In the evenings, we visited the old town, Vieux Lyon, where narrow, cobbled streets are crowded with people and restaurants. Most restaurants have tables outside. We ate local dishes by preference, including Andouillette, a tripe sausage, and potatoes Dauphine. Strangely, a large bowl of marinated mussels comes with a side plate of French fries. Croissants with pieces of chocolate are especially good for breakfast.

Atrapako and their Planet Vkani - #SciFi #Romance

NASA   The alien Atrapako inhabit the planet of Vkani in the outer fringes of the galaxy. Their planet was not discovered until recently since its sun is obscured by a dust cloud from much of the galaxy. Thousands of years ago, Atrapako civilization was destroyed when the planet suffered a catastrophe. The survivors changed. They developed a culture suited for the environment on their planet, harsh, hostile and unforgiving.

ATRAPAKO PHYSICAL APPEARANCE AND CULTURE
Physically, the Atrapako are bulky humanoids because of the heavy gravity on their native planet. They are covered in thick scales with protective ridges down their noses and along the length of their torsos. They have crests of stiff spines and curved claws on their hands and feet. They rarely wear shoes and their toe claws click when they walk on hard surfaces. The Atrapako have a rigid class system and their scales are colored according to their class. Blues are the dominating leaders. They scheme for power and expect instant obedience from the other classes. Greens are the technologists, scientists, and mechanics. Reds are strong and massive. They are soldiers and laborers and rarely speak. They have no names as far as the other classes are concerned. Yellows are the children and anyone not included in the other three classes. For instance, an artist would be a Yellow since art is an unvalued talent, unnecessary for survival on Vkani.
 Lady
The story of what happened when the Atrapako first meet humans is told in Book 1, The Lady is Blue . A spaceship of Atrapako escaping from the hostilities on their native planet is forced to land on the planet of Eden. The Atrapako are sick and their ship is falling apart. The friendly human colonists on Eden are thrilled to meet aliens, while the Atrapako believe the humans are weak and emotional. Eden is a true paradise and the human colonists enjoy parties and a variety of intellectual and physical pursuits. They are sure to clash with the rigid society of  Atrapako. Dr. Lucy Stannis, one of the top scientists on Eden, befriends the Blue, Sa Kamizan Veedak, who led the Atrapako in the spaceship. Time after time, he is surprised by her intelligent insights and fighting skills. After combatting assassination attempts and rebellions, Lucy and Sa Kamizan find a solution to the conflict between the two cultures.

          THE PLANET OF VKANI
 Vkani
The continents of Vkani have arid deserts and rugged mountains. Sandstorms scour the dry lands and thunderstorms blast the mountains. The larger life forms are reptilian, such as the dragon lizards and pterodactyl-like flying predators described in Book 2, Dragons of Vkani . No life can survive in the lethal Deadlands.   Atrapako life is barbaric and ruled by the threat of attack by marauders or a major battle. There are few cities, full of miserable slums, because of the almost constant wars. High ranked Blues live in fortresses in the mountains or underground. The history and origin of the Atrapako are probed in “Dragons of Vkani” when a human spaceship brings a mixed group of human scientists and Atrapako to rescue the families of the Atrapako on Eden.

The Lady is Blue for #SFRB Showcase Plus 99c Specials

SFRB Showcase Welcome to the SFR Brigade Showcase for September For this month’s showcase, I’m posting an excerpt from my first novel, The Lady is Blue. Please remember to check out the posts from the other participants at http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html
BlurbWhat color are your scales? Dr. Lucy Stannis, the chief biologist in the remote human colony on Eden, is thrilled when their scientists make contact with an alien vessel. Undaunted by the scaled bodies and sharp claws of the formidable Atrapako, Lucy befriends the spaceship captain, the Blue, Sa Kamizan Veedak. Her hopes of learning about the aliens are frustrated when they refuse to cooperate.
Appearances are deceptive. Sa Kamizan seeks a safe haven for his people. He has led them on a terrible voyage from their desolate homeland, and he will not permit the colony of puny humans to spoil his plans to settle on the fertile planet. He must rethink his devious scheme after meeting the beautiful, feisty Dr. Stannis. Her skills surprise him at every new challenge, but he cannot claim her without revealing the forbidden Atrapako secret.
Conflict is inevitable. The rigid culture of the unemotional aliens clashes with the lively human society, threatening Lucy’s tenuous friendship with Sa Kamizan. Can the unlikely couple overcome prejudice and work together to save the colony?
If you like plucky heroines and mysteries where deceptions abound, then you’ll enjoy this science fiction adventure and sweet romance with a surprise twist at the end. Book 1 of Atrapako on Eden.
 Lady

Excerpt: Sa Kamizan and Lucy flirt after swimming in a mountain pool.
Lucy rolled back onto her stomach. “Of course, you have no feelings! I forgot.” She sighed dramatically. “Any more nonsense and I’ll scratch your back,” he threatened. Lucy wriggled her shoulders and called his bluff. “Good, I’ve got an itch in the middle of my back.” There was the scrape of scales on rock as he moved to sit near her. He began to rub her back gently.  Lucy smiled to herself. It was pleasant without his exposed claws. “A little lower,” she directed. His breath came warm on her neck as he murmured, “You would scrape the skin from your hands if you tried to scratch my back.” She laughed. “I know. We are totally incompatible.” His breathing quickened and Lucy felt his hand slide down her body. An uncomfortable flush spread over her. She tensed and said coldly, “You enjoy touching me.” Sa Kamizan removed his hand quickly and she sat up, hugging her knees to her chest protectively. He gazed at her face, half kneeling in front of her. “You are beautiful!” he said with an unexpected catch in his voice. “Do you feel emotion?” she asked, conscious of an electric attraction between them. For the first time, she felt he was vulnerable. He had betrayed a feeling of desire. He gave a choke of laughter. “I did not claim to have no emotion, only less powerful emotions.” A sudden insight hit her. “Oh, you mean less powerful than in Azarak?” Reacting in alarm, his crest hairs stood erect and his eyes narrowed. He grabbed her arm, and grated, “Who told you?” Without hesitating, she gazed into his piercing eyes and said, “You did.” “I did not mention Azarak.” He glared at her. She replied smoothly, “I made a lucky guess at the name.” “Who have you told, Lucy?” he demanded, tightening his grip on her arm.She shook her head and gave a rueful grin. “Who on Eden would believe me? Not the Governors; they consider me negligible, or crazy. They are even oblivious to the Blues’ games of dominance.”He said, “I don’t play those games with you.” His crest lowered as he grew calmer. “No,” she said in a thoughtful voice. “You don’t scare me. We play other games.” She tilted her chin, offering a challenge. Sa Kamizan released her arm. “You are a dangerous woman, Lucy Stannis.” “You are full of compliments today,” she whispered. “You may be the only person on Eden who believes I am dangerous.” He grinned and lifted a loose strand of her hair. “It is part of your attraction. You keep astounding me.” “We share a liking for dangerous people,” she said with a gleaming smile.
