‘Bronte ran along the old road through the forest. This had been the scene of so much dismay for her, but she didn’t know where else to go. She felt so alone; this wasn’t something she could share with anyone, not even her best friends. Does it stand out to them that I’m different? The question ran through her, over and over. “Why me? Why me?”
It began to rain, but she didn’t care. She ran through the woods, down the hillside to the river. I always feel better near water, she thought to herself, as she headed down to the sandy banked beach. Here, she was sheltered under the rocky overhang. She pulled her feet in close and tucked her knees under her chin, as she sat shielded from the rain, thinking about all she had just learnt.
Lewis walked along the route she’d just taken, calling her name over and over. Rain collected on the peak of his flat cap, trickling off in front of his face. He was wet through, but brushed it off and kept on going. Bronte could hear him going past on the old road above her, and kept still. She knew he would be worried, but she wasn’t ready to be found yet. She knew he couldn’t see her from where he was. Bronte listened, his voice growing distant as he moved away.’

English author Serina Hartwell’s novel Hidden launches a multi-book fantasy saga featuring a family that appears to straddle two worlds – one a suburban or rural Earth community, the other a fantasy realm.
What inspired your novel?
One day I had an urge to have a go at writing something. I just wondered if I could do it, the compulsion really strong. I sat down at an old computer that a friend had given me – a big bulky tower set up in an awkward place – and wrote a couple of pages. I started striking the keys, instantly finding a storyline. The weirdest thing, but it felt natural and comfortable. It got interrupted and I never went back to it.

‘Regan looked at her blankly at first, then began to laugh, as realisation struck her like a bolt of lightning. The crowd was beginning to get restless, as they became impatient. They had been promised action. Someone at the back of the crowd shouted “Get on with it already!” The voice sounded distant; Bronte couldn’t make out who had said it.
“She thinks that the dare is to swing out over the river!” Regan shouted, turning towards the crowd, laughing hysterically. People started to question what they were here to watch. Riley could see she was losing the crowd and his colour started to come back as he breathed a sigh of relief, losing some of his composure in the process. Bronte let go of the rope looking confused.
“What is it then?” came another voice, closer this time.
Clouds gathered more readily now, as the sun dipped behind them. The atmosphere grew still, as silence fell amongst the throng. The sky dimmed as Regan walked over to a small mound of sandy soil, taking centre stage. Bronte noticed the breeze had suddenly breathed its last breath, as an eerie stillness encompassed the area. The leaves on Old Nelson grew still and the dappled sunlight disappeared. It felt like even the earth was holding its breath, waiting in anticipation to hear what Regan had to say.’

‘Marcy was somehow managing to keep her cool, although she had no idea how. Kelsey came around a little, as she realised the scale of what had just happened.
“Go! Go now! Run!” Marcy urged, as she gently pushed her friend in the direction of the mill yard entrance. Kelsey, still in shock, started to run. She looked back over her shoulder at Marcy for encouragement. Marcy shouted, “Quickly – we don’t know how hurt she is.” Kelsey quickened her pace and left the mill yard, running faster and faster, until she was running hard.
The majority of the kids had scattered, for fear of being caught by the police or their parents. None of them were supposed to be there. The punishment if they were caught would be harsh, especially now that something had gone terribly wrong. The thunder and lightning cleared the rest, as it rolled in overhead.
Marcy stood for a moment in the driving rain, her hair soaking wet and rain running down her face into her eyes. It bounced on the ground all around her as she wiped it away, along with the tears, which were pushing their way out. It was warm on her skin, but she started to shiver, as shock was starting to set in. Marcy knew she had to go inside – something she was not looking forward to, but she had to do it before she lost her nerve.’

She shivered, as the muggy heat she had encountered up to now was suddenly cooled by the mill. “This place is bad… I don’t like it!” she said to Riley, as she could feel the negativity of the mill draining the warmth from the atmosphere.’

‘The moon shone over the valley, casting silvery glass shadows in its wake. Lewis drew his scarf in closer to his neck, as he stepped out of his cosy cottage, into the crisp air of the clear, cold night. He looked up into the heavens, and relished the array of stars and distant suns presented before him. He locked his door, and pulled it to check it was locked, smiling. This is definitely something that comes with age, he thought to himself, setting off walking towards Mrs Salvador’s house. The witching hour was approaching, and he needed to make headway. He quickened his pace, leaves crunching under the tread of his boots. The thought of what they were about to undertake was at the forefront of his mind.
He headed to her house along the old back road through the woods, planning their enterprise. In the distance, he could hear the moans and cries of the animals, resident in the woods. This wasn’t anything new to him. He was used to these noises, but tonight, he felt on edge… and silly. He had walked this path many times before. Living next to the woods, he was used to their rhythms of the night. He could hear his heart beating hard, high in his chest, as he walked along. His breathing quickened, and manifested before him, instantly misting up before him. Lewis had no idea why he felt the need to speed up, but the drive to walk faster was growing. This path had never bothered him before, but tonight was different, and he had no idea why. He had the overriding feeling that he was being watched. He could feel eyes all around, shadowing him, but couldn’t locate any.
Behind him on the road, was a noise set aside from the others. This was something unidentified, off in the distance. He stopped to listen more carefully, trying to work out its exact location. As he stood waiting for a moment, silence surrounded him. He strained to listen, but heard nothing unusual… the noise had stopped. It must be my imagination, he told himself, setting off again. He shook his head, thinking, you’re getting too old for all this, mate. I’m starting to imagine things that aren’t there. He sighed to himself. It must be ‘cause of what I’m about to do. I’ve gotten myself all worked up, and spooked myself. I’m listening for things which aren’t there. He continued to walk along the darkened path. The trees seemed to have moved in closer. He felt like they had leaned over and linked themselves together at the top, blocking any chance of light getting in from the starlit sky above. They were shrouding his way, there was no light. He felt like the forest had held its breath, as he reached the middle of his journey along this path.
There it was again, on the road behind him. The hairs on the back of his neck stood-on-end, and a cold shiver ran down his back. There was no mistaking that noise. It wasn’t his imagination this time.’
