BOOK: Man of War E-Book Sale

BOOKS

The wonderful crew at Meteor House sent out this press release for their giant e-book sale, which includes Man of War.

As our loyal readers around the world continued to stay at home, protecting themselves and their neighbors, we here at Meteor House want to continue to do our small part in helping everyone flatten the curve, and so for the past week all of our ebooks have been on sale.

One of the things we love here at Meteor House has been the opportunity to allow other writers to create new stories based in Philip José Farmer's worlds. Today we spotlight Man of War: A Two Hawks Adventure by the very talented Heidi Ruby Miller.

In Philip José Farmer’s novel Two Hawks from Earth, Native American pilot Roger Two Hawks flew through his first “gate” while on a bombing run over Romania during World War II. The gate brought him to Earth 2, a world where the Americas never existed. Since then he has continued to fight battles on Earth after Earth, each stranger than the last.

In Heidi Ruby Miller’s short story “Dakota’s Gate” (Worlds of Philip José Farmer 3 and included in Man of War as a prelude), set on Earth 3, North America never advanced past stone tools and rock shelters. But that’s where Two Hawks met another gate traveler, Dakota Cummings. It was Dakota, a woman turned friend and lover, who pulled him through a gate to her Earth, the most alien and deadly of all.

Earth 4. Two hundred years in the future. A war thirty-six thousand feet underwater. Two Hawks must draw upon all he’s learned during his gate travels in order to survive war between technologically advanced humans and their far-future hybrid cousins. This time more than just his and Dakota’s lives are at stake—the fate of an entire world is in his hands.

EVENT: AllAccessCon Presents Space Opera is Still Queen by Heidi Ruby Miller

EVENTS

I'll be presenting "Space Opera is Still Queen" at AllAccessCon for Raw Dog Screaming Press and Dog Star Books on Saturday, April 4, 2020 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM ET. There will be free books, a workshop, readings, a booksigning, and an author Q&A. The press release information is below:

Feeling stuck at home when you'd rather be in outer space?

Join our Space Opera is Still Queen online workshop! Learn what this genre is, how it's written, and how it impacts popular culture.

Based on her class for Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction MFA program, Heidi Ruby Miller will show why publishers, including Dog Star Books, are still putting out the call for space opera amid Disney opening up two theme park lands devoted to Star Wars, the blockbusterdom of Guardians of the Galaxy, successful streaming series like The Expanse, and Amazon proving that readers will still devour alien empires and interplanetary sagas.

Attendees will receive a free eBook copy of Heidi Ruby Miller's novel Ambasadora: Marked By Light. The event will also include a reading by Miller from her other works in the Ambasadora universe.

To have a signed paperback copy of Ambasadora, Starrie, or Greenshift delivered to you via the US Postal Service simply order a copy at one of these links:
Ambasadora signed copy
Greenshift signed copy
Starrie signed copy

You will have a chance to give instructions on how you want it personalized either when you order or live onscreen at the end of the workshop. Free shipping to all USA addresses.

Stay Home, Stay Safe, Have Fun

This online event features a main stage where the presentation takes place. You can interact with workshop leader Heidi Ruby Miller, other attendees, and event staff through the chat area, and take polls as they pop up there as well. After the workshop and book signing, you can explore other areas of our virtual event space.

Then Expo area features vendors just like at a convention. Here you will find publishers, authors, other workshops, and more.

In the Networking area you can meet other attendees in speed networking sessions of 30 seconds to 3 minutes in length. If you want to maintain this connection you can exchange contact info that will be stored in your Hopin profile for later reference, just like exchanging business cards at an in-person event. The system introduces you to other attendees at random.

All you need to join us is:

a Hopin account
a ticket to the event
a strong internet connection

Due to increased internet traffic, we recommend closing your browser and trying again if you encounter glitches. While this is rare we have received some reports of these issues and are investigating. Thank you.

CELEBRATION: 1 Million Views on Heidi Ruby Miller - Revisiting New Pulp

CELEBRATIONS

To celebrate 1,000,000 views and counting at www.heidirubymiller.com, I'm revisiting my most visited posts last year and...

...making my novel GREENSHIFT (From the World of Ambasadora) free on Amazon from Tuesday, January 28, 2020 until Saturday, February 1, 2020.

Many thanks to my readers and fans who keep coming back after all these years and to those new to my little part of the universe (known around here as the Ambasadora-verse). There is lots to come in 2020, including new publications, appearances, and blog posts!

Now to revisit:

ARTICLE: New Pulp by Heidi Ruby Miller in The Writer

My article "New Pulp" is in the July 2019 issue of The Writer magazine. It is based on a class I taught in Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction MFA program and features quotes from Matt Betts , Maurice Broaddus , Christopher Paul Carey , Mike Chomko , John Edward Lawson , and Lee Murray about the resurgence of this popular fiction genre.

Here's an excerpt:
Pulp fiction is having a moment. And I don’t mean the Tarantino movie from the ‘90s – that was having a moment since Jules gave away his wallet. I’m talking about the adventure stories of old with those provocative covers and dime-store price tags that are enjoying a renaissance thanks to the subgenre “new pulp.”

ARTICLE: The In-Betweeners by Heidi Ruby Miller in The Writer

ARTICLES

My article "The In-Betweeners: Bridging the Gap Between Middle Grade and YA" is in the January 2020 issue of The Writer magazine. It is based on a class I taught in Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction MFA program and features quotes from Kathryn Miller Haines , Dr. Uwe Stender of TriadaUS Literary Agency , Nick Courage , and Stephanie Keyes .

Here's an excerpt:
Two years ago during the Writing Popular Fiction MFA winter residency at Seton Hill University, a discussion broke out amongst my students in a critique workshop geared toward young adult (YA) writers. They didn't think YA novels were really written for teens anymore, or at least early teens, yet most middle grade (MG) fiction felt as though it belonged more in the chapter book and younger reader category. Much of this concern was prompted by the idea that more adults wee now reading YA than teens were. Just look at the most recent Nielsen studies, which show that at least 80% of worldwide sales for YA novels are by adults for adults.

It was understandable that many of my students are now worried that what they were writing wasn't edgy enough for this new YA trend toward mature readers and wondered if truly age-appropriate fiction, where there was a younger teen protagonist, should actually be geared toward the MG audience. They weren't the only ones concerned.

BOOK DEAL: Heidi Ruby Miller to Write for Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe

BOOK DEALS

During the Burroughs panel last month at PulpFest in Pittsburgh , ERB Director of Publishing Christopher Paul Carey announced that I will be heading the second wave of the brand new Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe (ERBU) which is bringing together all of Burroughs's vast properties (including Tarzan and John Carter) like Marvel did with its characters and worlds in the MCU. Specifics about which character I will be taking over are still heavily under wraps but will be revealed when I am introduced to fans on a panel at San Diego Comic Con 2020. I couldn't be more thrilled and honored. Updates to come.

ARTICLE: Pick Your Punk by Heidi Ruby Miller in The Writer

ARTICLES

My article "Pick Your Punk" is in the October 2019 issue of The Writer magazine. It is based on a class I taught in Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction MFA program and features quotes from K. Ceres Wright and Shelley Adina about the qualities that make each punk special.

Here's an excerpt:
It all started when Greg Shaw used the term punk in the April 1971 issue of Rolling Stone. The movement may have been already building, but now it was a word, and as all writers know, words are power.

Less than 10 years later, Bruce Bethke introduced a new version of that word to the literary scene with his 1980 short story "Cyberpunk." Said Bethke in the foreword to his story on the British website
infinity plus, "In calling it that, I was actively trying to invent a new term that grokked the juxtaposition of punk attitudes and high technology. My reasons for doing so were purely selfish and market-driven: I wanted to give my story a snappy, one-word title that editors would remember."
