DOGCON COUNTDOWN #12

October 20-21, 2012

The first ever DogCon , hosted by Raw Dog Screaming Press , will be part Halloween party, part writer's weekend, part State of the Dog address. This is an invitation only event but if it goes well could be a public event next year!

GUEST SPOTLIGHT - DAMIEN WALTERS GRINTALIS

I was imprinted with a love of reading at a young age by my father, thanks to weekly trips to the library. At the age of eleven, I saw the movie Alien and read Stephen King’s The Shining; after that, my attraction to all things dark and scary turned into true love.

Except for spiders. They make my skin crawl.

I am partial to the color orange, drink copious amounts of coffee, and refuse to spell the word grey with an A.

I live in Maryland with my husband, two former shelter cats, and two rescued pit bulls. I'm an Active member of both the Horror Writers Association and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, an Associate Editor of the Hugo Award-winning speculative fiction magazine, Electric Velocipede, a staff writer with BookLifeNow, and am represented by Linda Epstein of The Jennifer DeChiara Literary Agency. You may contact me at dwg@damienwaltersgrintalis.com.

My debut novel, Ink, will be published in December 2012 by Samhain Horror.

HEIDI'S PICK SIX: Mike Kleine

HEIDI'S PICK SIX

Mike Kleine

1. Which of your characters is your favorite?

2. Tell me about your travels.

3. Coffee, tea, or milk?

4. What else can you do besides write?

5. Who are you reading right now?

Katherine Dunn, she’s been on my to-read list for years. Also, Shane Jones.

6. Pop culture or academia?

I am fascinated by both.

7. What is the toughest scene you ever wrote?

8. Where do you find your inspirations to write?

Mostly music and film. I sort of go all out with that in Mastodon Farm. There’s music in almost every scene and the chapters/sections are like snippets from a film… I wrote a book that’s literally like the movies. Or as Noah Cicero puts it: “It’s like watching TV for 12 hours on a Saturday.” But it’s short, 126 pages. Not that bad, no?

9. Food you could eat everyday.

10. Are you into sports or other physical activities?

I played football in high school and freshman year of college. I was kicker and linebacker. But usually, people are more interested in the kicker stuff. Mostly because I was the only “straight on” kicker in my conference (both in high school and college). But really, I’ve never been interested in sports.

11. What kind of music speaks to you?

12. Do you outline your stories or do they just take you along for the ride?

13. Celebrity crush.

At the moment? Shirley MacLaine c. 1961 and Penelope Allen c. 1975 (who, by the way, still looks amazing at 78).

14. Who are the biggest influences on your work?

15. Do you still watch cartoons?

No. Now it’s all about the Food Network.

Mike Kleine is an American author of literary fiction. He graduated from Grinnell college with a B.A. in French literature. Someday, he will begin his M.A. in English literature. He currently lives somewhere in the Midwest. Mastodon Farm (2012, Atlatl Press) is his first book.

DESCRIPTION FOR Mastodon Farm :

Outside: something resembling Godzilla attacks the city. At the party, 'Faith' by George Michael is playing and someone is telling you to consider changing apartments.

"In his impressive debut novel, Mike Kleine fingers the asterisk of pop culture by turns absurd, matted, and outré-familiar. Mastodon Farm lays bare the smooth fiction of mediatized reality."

-D. Harlan Wilson, author of Hitler: The Terminal Biography

GUEST SPOTLIGHT - JASON JACK MILLER

Jason Jack Miller hails from Fayette County, Pennsylvania, as in, "Circus freaks, temptation and the Fayette County Fair," made famous by The Clarks in the song, "Cigarette." He is a writer, photographer and musician. His first band was the un-ironically named Phist, a punk/grunge hybrid who played their first show during second period at Tri-Valley High School’s Winter Carnival. Their last show was a week later on New Year’s Eve at Friend’s Roller Rink. He worked as a whitewater raft guide on the Lower Yough in Pennsylvania and the Cheat in West Virginia, during which time he met his wife, Heidi. An outdoor travel guide he co-authored with his wife in 2006 jumpstarted his freelancing career; his work has since appeared in newspapers, magazines, literary journals, online, as part of a travel guide app for mobile phones, and in a regular column for Inveterate Media Junkies. He wrote the novels Hellbender and All Saints during his graduate studies at Seton Hill University, where he is now adjunct creative writing faculty. When he isn't writing he's on his mountain bike or looking for his next favorite guitar. He is currently writing and recording the soundtracks to his novels, The Devil and Preston Black and Hellbender, and his next novel, The Gospel of Preston Black. He lives near Pittsburgh with his writer wife Heidi Ruby Miller. Tweet him @jasonjackmiller.

HEIDI'S PICK SIX: Brady Allen

HEIDI'S PICK SIX

Brady Allen

1. Which of your characters is your favorite?

2. Tell me about your travels.

3. Coffee, tea, or milk?

4. What else can you do besides write?

What? Besides write?! Well, I think I’m a real good dad. Plus, I won 2nd-place in a hog-calling contest at the country fair when I was a teenager—I’ve never owned hogs, though. I love to hit baseballs.

5. Who are you reading right now?

I’m just finishing John Hornor Jacobs’ This Dark Earth, just starting “Author and Finisher of Our Flesh,” a Gorias La Gaul story by Steven Shrewsbury, and I’m in the middle of re-reading the stories in Kelly Link’s Magic for Beginners for a project I’m working on with a student. And I’m lovin’ ‘em all.

6. Pop culture or academia?

Both. I work in one (academia—I’m still not sure how I got there), but my office there is plastered with the Hulk, the Reds, Batman, Waylon, Stephen King, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, etc. Same with my writing—I’m no esoteric literary writer by any stretch, but I do think my work, though raw, shows hints of the literary crowd’s influence, occasionally . . . Okay, maybe not!

7. What is the toughest scene you ever wrote?

8. Where do you find your inspirations to write?

9. Food you could eat everyday.

10. Are you into sports or other physical activities?

11. What kind of music speaks to you?

Outlaw country, especially Waylon Jennings, and hard-drivin’ rock ‘n’ roll like AC/DC, but I love the blues, too, and bluegrass.

12. Do you outline your stories or do they just take you along for the ride?

I’m a big believer in discovering stories as I go. A story I already know is already a boring story for me. I like to start with an image or character or setting—ideally all three—and just see where it takes me. I can do this since I’m primarily a short story writer. I did it with a novel, and that’s probably why I’m in the home stretch of a massive rewrite on that son-of-a-gun.

13. Celebrity crush.

Well, I’m way past crushes in my life, but I wouldn’t mind doing shots with Sheri Moon Zombie and trying to get her to dance or do that hysterical laugh for me.

14. Who are the biggest influences on your work?

15. Do you still watch cartoons?

Brady Allen is the author of Back Roads and Frontal Lobes (Post Mortem Press, 2012), a collection of 23 tales in the genres of horror, crime, the road story, soft sci-fi, dark fantasy, surrealism, existentialism, the weird tale, and even some plain ol' realism. He has published numerous short stories in magazines, journals, and anthologies in the U.S, England, and Ireland and has received honorable mentions for a couple of them in the Year's Best Fantasy and Horror volumes from St. Martin’s Press, as well as an Individual Artist Fellowship in fiction from the Ohio Arts Council for three others. He loves Reds baseball on a transistor radio, and the sound of a train in the still of the night.

DESCRIPTION FOR Back Roads and Frontal Lobes :These 23 short tales take you along dark, unlined roads and into dark minds less traveled. Held together by themes of isolation and loneliness, existentialism and hope, and choice versus fate, and at turns both disturbing and darkly comical (while often tinged with sadness), this collection of stories explores both speculative fiction and realism: horror and dark fantasy, road stories and crime, dark drama and soft sci-fi, and surrealism and magical realism.

HEIDI'S PICK SIX: Paul R. Hewlett

HEIDI'S PICK SIX

Paul R. Hewlett

1. Which of your characters is your favorite?

Lionel is the obvious choice. I love writing about him. He is the loveable loser-type that everyone can relate to. It is great fun to put him in these humorous situations. He often is close enough to his "prize" to just grab it, but his big heart always seems to get in the way. He's not heroic, brave, cool, or any of those type of things, but I think he is really an impressive kid. A kid, I hope that other kids will look up to.

2. Tell me about your travels.

3. Coffee, tea, or milk?

Coffee for sure. I'm hoping that research will come to light proving that there is a distinct link between the amount of coffee consumed and a long, healthy life.

4. What else can you do besides write?

5. Who are you reading right now?

6. Pop culture or academia?

7. What is the toughest scene you ever wrote?

8. Where do you find your inspirations to write?

Everyday life to be honest. My day job is sales and I run into some real characters. I tend to be a people watcher and honestly, some of the things you see are better than fiction. I kid you not, you couldn't even write some of this stuff. My personal motto is, and I can't take credit for this quote but I have no idea who to attribute it to, is that life is 5% what happens to you and 95% how you react to it. This is the motto I use with Lionel. Life happens to him and the story kind of revolves around how he reacts and the lesson he learns from his reactions.

9. Food you could eat everyday.

10. Are you into sports or other physical activities?

11. What kind of music speaks to you?

Reggae and jazz. I love Bob Marley, His message is great and I love the rhythm of reggae. It really does speak to me. I will include jazz in this answer as well. I listen to classic jazz when I'm writing. The rhythms are great for focus.

12. Do you outline your stories or do they just take you along for the ride?

Interesting question. They take for a ride. I tried outlining my most recent WIP though. I found some benefit to it, but for the most part it's the ride for me. That does mean quite a few rewrites. To be honest, I love that part of a story. I love the feedback from my critique group, beta readers, and editor. Taking the original story and reworking it is my favorite part. It really comes alive. I love the feeling of it all coming together. I guess, for me, that is the ride.

13. Celebrity crush.

Jennifer Aniston. 'Nuff said:)

14. Who are the biggest influences on your work?

15. Do you still watch cartoons?

Paul R. Hewlett, salesman by day, writer by night. Air Force vet. His aim is to write books that are constructive for children and encourage them to read, even if reading is not their favorite thing. He lives in the Midwest with his wife and dog (he's a "senior" that they adopted from the local rescue shelter). Lionel's Grand Adventure: Lionel and the Golden Rule is the first book in a series. It is his first book (reviews & feedback would be much appreciated).

He recently began co-authoring a middle grade/YA blog with Sher A. Hart .

DESCRIPTION FOR Lionel and the Golden Rule :

Lionel’s Grand Adventure is a beginning chapter book about a twelve year old boy who is constantly subjected to ridicule from his Mom and older brother. Things change when he makes a seemingly innocent discovery. The magical, yet unpredictable, Three-Toed-Potbellied Walbaun foot takes him on the adventure of a lifetime. Explore Lionel’s adventure and discover the wonderful world of the magical Walbaun foot and the lesson that it helps teach Lionel. My book helps children who want to feel better about themselves. It helps them find a role model. Lionel is very comfortable with who he is despite his physical shortcomings and his bullying Mom and older brother.

DESCRIPTION FOR Lionel Turns the Other Cheek :

Lionel is back in another Grand Adventure! Lionel's Grand Adventure: Lionel Turns the Other Cheek is a beginning chapter book for ages 7-10. Lionel has always wanted to go to summer camp, but will his mean old Mom let him? Even though Lionel is now familiar with the Three-Toed-Pot-Bellied Walbaun foot, its unpredictable nature takes him on another adventure of a lifetime. Join Lionel as he heads off to summer camp and discover the wonderful world of the magical Walbaun foot and the lesson it helps teach Lionel (again).
