Book Review: Rose Under Fire
By Elizabeth Wein

Incredible WWII historical fiction sequel taking place in a German concentration camp; raw, honest, beautifully written and researched. Fulfilled my feminist needs.
Rating: 9/10
Genre: YA Historical Fiction (WWII)
Favorite Quotes:
“It’s so hard trying to say what you mean.”“Five years of destruction and mayhem, lives lost everywhere, shortages of food and fuel and clothing - and the insane mind behind it just urges us all on and on to more destruction. And we all keep playing.”
“TELL THE WORLD.”
Summary:
While flying an Allied fighter plane from Paris to England, American ATA pilot and amateur poet, Rose Justice, is captured by the Nazis and sent to Ravensbruck, the notorious women’s concentration camp. Trapped in horrific circumstances, Rose finds hope in the impossible through the loyalty, bravery and friendship of her fellow prisoners. But will that be enough to endure the fate that’s in store for her?
Elizabeth Wein, author of the critically-acclaimed and best-selling Code Name Verity, delivers another stunning WWII thriller. The unforgettable story of Rose Justice is forged from heart-wrenching courage, resolve, and the slim, bright chance of survival.
Review:
Code Name Verity, the first book in the series, is one of my all time favorites. So I had pretty high hopes when I picked up this book – and they were ultimately fulfilled. While Rosie is definitely no Julie, I found myself falling in love with the main character, who undergoes one of the most abrupt, honest, and visible character changes I have ever seen in a book.
She starts out as a chipper American girl, eager to fly a fighter pilot, ready to be a hero. But when she is captured and sent to a concentration camp in Germany, the book takes on a whole new tone. The book is split into several parts, all written in Rosie’s journal: first, before her imprisonment, and then afterwards, when she escapes and is recounting the horrors she has experienced. This book is incredible. Stocked full of real, incredibly written female characters, bravery, unimaginable suffering – this book is raw.
Elizabeth Wein’s Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire are absolutely terrific. The effort she took in researching these novels is evident in her eloquence and depth in the subject – and what a terrible subject. The horror Rosie and the other women experienced in the concentration camp is all too real, as, for a historical fiction, it ought to be.
The characters–the characters! As Ravensbruck was an all-women concentration camp, the majority of the characters are women. That is one thing I really appreciate about Wein’s books: no unnecessary romance ploys, but plenty of strong, well-crafted friendships between strong, well-crafted female characters. As a feminist, these books are just perfect.
Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire will always be at the top of my reading list. Everyone who has any speck of interest in WWII or planes or amazing female characters should read these ASAP.

Today I walk into work and there are a ton of people in my building and it’s kind of a mess and everyone is talking and I sort of just blurt out:
“Man, it’s a zoo in here!”
Everyone stopped and looked at me as though I had 2 heads.
Then I realized.
I work at a zoo.
Update: my boss was talking about how he was really excited for an entire week of vacation and was wondering what he should do, so I looked him dead in the eye and told him, with a straight face,
“You should visit the local Zoo, I heard it’s really nice.”
Under pain of death I am no longer allowed to make any zoo related jokes.
Part three: I was cleaning the squirrel monkeys and one of them kept trying to climb up me so I sort of just yelled
“WILL YOU STOP MONKEYING AROUND??”
I forgot my boss was in the next room and he walked and just glared at me
Please never stop doing the lord’s work
