Locus Awards!

My novelette The Sun From Both Sides is on the Locus Awards long list and voting closes TOMORROW, Wed 15 April!

Locus Magazine is one of the premiere scifi magazines in the world, and being long listed is a great honour for me. I’m actually on it twice, as my story ‘The Anchorite Wakes’ is included in the Best Science Fiction of the Year: Volume 4, edited by Neil Clarke, which is also nominated for Best Collection.

Click here to read The Sun From Both Sides.

This list is decided on by industry reviewers and writers and then the awards are voted on by the public, so please follow the link and vote for your faves.

It’s ranked voting so you can include five choices in each category from 1st to 5th. If you want something to win, you vote for it for 1st place.

You don’t have to fill out the Locus survey, and you don’t have to be a subscriber to the magazine. Just make sure to include your email and name or the vote won’t count. You don’t have to vote in every category either. Full instructions are at the link.

Thank you for reading, and for your support.

An Interview with the Author

So the world kind of went and exploded since the last time I posted.

I’m okay so far, and my country’s doing pretty well, all things considered. By which I mean, my people more ‘harden’ than the damn Italians and twice as sociable, so the government is pulling their hair out trying to get us to stay inside. Thank God they closed borders and schools early.

I’m in a risk group, however, with loved ones also in risk groups, so I’ve been trying to stay inside as much as possible, and I’m lucky enough to still have a job that lets me work from home.

In the meantime, I did a couple of interviews this week, so yay me!

One interview is a replacement for library tour around my country I’ve been forced to postpone for now. When that goes up on Facebook, I’ll post the link.

The other interview, is with the lovely Cheryl Morgan, a longtime writing friend, on Ujima Radio’s Women’s Outlook Show for April 1st 2020. She interviewed people from around the world about the Covid-19 situation in their country. My interview is around the hour mark, but the entire show is fascinating and well worth the listen. Here’s the link:

Listen Again

Hope you enjoy, and please let me know how it’s going in your neck of the woods in the comments below.

Till next time, stay thirsty, my friends! And stay at home!

It’s Official! Or, This Post Has a Lot of Exclamation Points!

The results for Clarkesworld’s Readers’ Poll were released on March 1st and the winner for favourite story of 2019 was….

A.T. Greenblatt’s beautiful ‘Give the Family My Love’!

This was entirely foreseeable as the same story has been nominated for a Nebula for Best Short Story.

Congrats to A.T. and Clarkesworld!

Second place went to ‘Such Thoughts are Unproductive’ by Rebecca Campbell and third place went to…

ME!!

That’s right, ‘The Sun from Both Sides’ finished third and I’m pleased as punch!

For the full results, including the best cover of 2019 (I’ll give you a hint, it was from the same issue as my story!), you can go here.

Thank you to all who voted in the poll, and everyone who cast a vote for my story. And huge congrats to A.T. and Rebecca! Award season has only just begun and I suspect this won’t be their last time in winners row!

I’ll have some more good news to announce soon, so keep watching this space. Until then, stay thirsty, my friends, and enjoy this awesome gif of me celebrating with one of my biggest fans

December 30, 2019

Goodbye, 2019

I know I’ve been gone a while and that was because life took a really hard turn in the second half of the year.

I lost a few family members. Most importantly, in September, my mom had a stroke. Shortly after, she passed away.

She was barely in her 60s and we had no warning at all. It’s been hard, especially since I lost my dog shortly after to a brain tumour.

I’m just starting to come back onto social media, aside from Twitter. I know I promised a post on my novelette. I’ll try to do that next year.

And the year wasn’t all bad. I have a couple of sales to announce that happened at the end of the year, and I’m hoping to get back on the writing horse so I can keep publishing in 2020.

For now, I plan to ring out a difficult year doing some fun things with my best friend and sister, and I wish everyone else a great holiday season, and a happy and prosperous New Year.

Here’s hoping 2020 is a wonderful year for us all. We all deserve it after 2019.

Auld Lang Syne, guys. May the best of your yesterdays be the worst of your tomorrows.

The Sun From Both Sides – Clarkesworld

Happy to announce my first ever novelette has been sold to Clarkesworld Magazine!

The Sun From Both Sides is now live and can be read for free here.

This is a very special one for me, and also one of the things I worked the most exhaustively on in the recent past. More editing passes were made on this than on my first novel, I swear!

I’ll talk about the process more in a later post, but for now I’ll just say it’s about a woman who sets out to rescue her husband, and then he rescues her right back. The title is actually part of a quote by David Viscott:

‘To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.’

Hope you enjoy!

Clarkesworld Readers’ Poll 2018

It’s been a banner year for me already, and it couldn’t happen at a better time, given I’m still hunting for a full time job.

So far, I’ve had three acceptances, signed two contracts, and I’ve just learned I’m a finalist in the Clarkesworld Readers’ Poll for favourite story of 2018 for my short, The Anchorite Wakes.

That last one’s really special to me. I’ve been lucky enough to have fans reach out to me to tell me what my work has meant to them, and that never gets old, let me tell you. But to be regarded as one of the favourite stories in a magazine with so many stunning, award-worthy works, by authors I admire and am flattered to be among–I’ve never had that before. There’s nothing like knowing you wrote something and it was seen. Really seen.

Readers now have until February 20th to vote for their favourite story and cover for 2018. I’d be delighted if you voted for mine, but I encourage you to read the stories–which are available for free–and peruse the cover art, then follow your heart and vote for what you loved. Voting will take a couple of minutes as there are only two questions, but you will be asked to rank the selections, so looking them over before hand will be helpful.

You can find the links to the stories, covers and voting here. Results will be announced in March.

I have some other good news that I can’t share yet, so please watch this space for further announcements.

And to everyone who’s reading this, everyone who follows me, reads my work, buys my stuff, and voted for me in the poll, please know how much I appreciate you. You are the best, and you’re the reason I keep doing what I do.

video games thank you GIF
