Sports Ban Update
I saw the cartoon above and it summed up my feelings toward the NFL in particular and the entire sports world in general. As I mentioned earlier, I’m walking away, and turning off the sports channels. From what I am hearing, so are many others.
And recent news this past week has only served to strengthen my resolve.
One of my sports non-fiction books, From The Fields, chronicles the first 100 years for high school football in my hometown, Turlock, California. One of the many players covered within the book is one, Colin Kaepernick. Colin, who never breathed a word of any issues he “allegedly” had in Turlock prior to this year, is teaming up with Jemele Hill and others to produce a series that will cover his formative years in high school. They imply Turlock is as racist a city as any found in the 1950s Deep South. This is a lie of course, but they don’t care and none in the major media will call them on it.
The NFL is bending a knee to Colin and his woke crowd and will play the Black National Anthem at games prior to playing the National Anthem. I kinda remember a big to-do back in the 1950s and 1960s to end segregation. Not sure two anthems based on skin color helps here.
[image error]The NFL has also begun pressuring one team to change its name. If the Redskins fall to this push, just watch the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and a few other teams get put into the pressure cooker.
Then we have the NBA, which is going to allow social justice messages to be displayed on the players’ uniforms. Interestingly enough, #FreeHongKong is not on the list of approved messages. I guess when you are so deep into the pocket of a murderous regime you can only be so “woke”, eh?
So, yeah, my decision to walk away stands. I even withdrew from both of my fantasy football leagues. I’ve been in the hobby for over thirty years but this will be the first time since 1989 that I will not participate.
[image error]ESPN and all of the other sports channels are either blocked or the subscription canceled. Same goes for anything Disney related. I’m just going to “let it go.” As far as the major networks, I haven’t watched a single second of any of their shows for five years anyway, so not watching a single broadcast second of their sports programming won’t be an issue either.
I will not give one more second of my time, not one more penny of my income, to any league, network or player until they remember that the lure of sports was always that chance to get away from the troubles of life if but for just a few precious hours. And you’ll forgive me if I don’t want to be told how evil I am for being a part of a society so terrible, so unfair to these players, that they make millions of dollars for playing a kid’s game for a living.
When I see LeBron James play a season at minimum wage and driving to the arena in a 1976 VW Bug maybe, just maybe, I’ll feel sorry for how rough his life is.
But if these entities and players insist on dragging politics and non-sports issues into their arenas well, they can preach to someone else. I’ll go find other entertainment that will allow me to relax and take a break from the world for a while.
I’ll read a book, watch an older movie or maybe queue up a video of an old NFL game from the 1970s on YouTube – there’s a bunch of them online that are better-played than most of what the NFL offers these days anyway.
I suggest you do the same. Here’s a few you might find of interest: Books By Richard Paolinelli.

Let Us Forsake The Dark And Walk In The Light
I wanted to touch on a subject raised by a reader regarding my recent posts about Superversive vs. subversive writing.
The reader wanted more on how to delineate between the two. To be honest, if reading the linked-to material didn’t explain it then there probably isn’t anything I can add that would clear up any confusion aside from maybe this:
Superversive looks at humanity with hope and looks to build up. Subversive looks at humanity as an evil lost cause and looks to tear down and burn it all to ash without offering a better alternative to replace what they want to destroy. Their respective stories reflect those philosophies.
[image error]Another reader wanted me to call out the subversive authors. I think I’ll pass. I’ve spent parts of the last three years fighting online with many subversive authors and the lower-end of the gene pool that supports them on certain, so-called, fan sites and blogs. In my defense, I only did so after one such, shall we say Vile Lord of Subversive Darkness, viciously attacked me for the sole crime of… wait for it… giving away a free copy of my very Superversive book, Escaping Infinity, at a comic book convention that the Cancel Culture mob had declared “unclean”.
Earlier this year I finally washed my hands of that lot for good. I have, as my grandson would say many years ago, “no more minutes” for them. I have no desire to get any more of that muck on me. I have too much work to do to let them be any more of a distraction than they’ve already been.
[image error]I prefer to focus on the Superversive, the positive side of all writing genres and not just sci-fi and fantasy, that I feel most readers are hungering for. I prefer to renounce the subversive darkness and walk the Superversive path of the light.
Which is why, every Sunday morning, I will be introducing you to a Superversive author in my Superversive Sunday Spotlight series. The first interview runs this Sunday with author John M. Olsen.
And it is why I have compiled a list of Superversive Publishers & Authors which I will be updating from time to time. Each name will have a link to either that author’s website or their Amazon page where you can find their books.
Please check them out. I promise you that you will find nothing but incredible, well- crafted stories that you will not only enjoy but might even make the world at large look a little less dim. And these days finding brighter and better times in our lives has become a little more valuable, wouldn’t you agree?

REVIEW: Warlord Of New York City – Leo Champion
One of the pure pleasures I enjoy from knowing so many authors is that I get to read a lot of great stories. When Leo Champion asked me to read his novel, Warlord of New York City, I was delighted not only to say yes, but that he couldn’t have timed his request any better. I had a nice hole in my schedule just begging to be filled by a new book.
We are introduced right off the bat to Diana Angela, a resident of New York City in the 23rd Century in an America none of us would recognize today. Diana is an executive that lives high above the streets of the City within the arkscrapers in a society that I would be tempted to call “Woke on Steroids” for lack of a better term.
Classes are strictly enforced and an incorrect thought, spoken word or action – sometimes even by the implication of the offended despite the intent of the now accused (does this sound familiar today?) – can lead to one’s ruin.
But Diana’s prim and proper outward appearance in the arkskrapers is a cover for a life she is carefully keeping hidden. On occasion, Diana makes her way down to the streets where life is much more chaotic and more third-world like. In this world she is known as Lady D and she is an accomplished assassin.
She is on the trail of Jeff Hammer, one of many warlords who have carved out little empires among the city blocks below. Hammer is making noise about making changes in life on the streets and Diana fears another attempt to establish a commune. The first such attempt ended in disaster for all involved and deeply impacted Diana’s life as well.
But Hammer is not the despot she fears he might become and as this first book in the series comes to an end we see a sliver of hope that things on the streets below – and the arkscrapers – are about to change for the better.
I know my first thought after I finished reading it was to try to figure out how exactly the author plans to carry out the many story arcs he has running through this book. As soon as said second book comes out, I’ll be grabbing a copy and jumping right back into this amazing world he has created.
One thought I wanted to share: This novel was written and released in 2019 but it is frighteningly prescient in a way. Much of the “woke” nonsense we are seeing play out in 2020 has taken a firm grip on society in the 23rd Century. Readers of this book should look at this and see it as a cautionary tale of the dark, unlikable world we are on track to become if we don’t change course and the sooner, the better.
Check out the book for yourself and see if you agree:

Now that we’re all up to speed…
My posts have set off several discussions on Twitter and on Facebook and they have been quite informative. Hopefully, they’ve introduced new readers to the Superversive writing style and why it is superior to the subversive. I’m also hoping they take advantage of the chance to check out some of the authors and publishers you’ll find on this list here on my site:
Superversive Publishers/Authors
To help that process along, beginning next Sunday right here on my blog, I’ll be introducing you to a Superversive author, allowing he or she to tell you a little bit about themselves and their works and why you should be reading them.
I am looking forward to this weekly feature a lot and I hope you all will enjoy it too. So check back next week for our first spotlighted Superversive author, John M. Olsen.
And, um, while you are waiting for that, there is a certain Superversive author you could check out right now. Just saying…

CHAPTER TWO
“Recreation Deck.”
Kirk stepped out of the turboshaft hoping to get in a quiet hour of work on the mat. McCoy had been after him about his weight again and the last thing he wanted to deal with was another dietary shift to salads. It was late in the evening and the deck was usually empty at this time.
But not this time.
Nearly half the crew must be down here, he mused as he took a quick head count, I didn’t see any notice posted for a special event.
Making his way through the crowd he spotted McCoy near the front and adjusted his course accordingly. The object of everyone’s attention in the room was his Security Chief. Dressed only in black workout briefs, Forelni was keeping both a heavy medicine ball that Kirk knew weighed nearly sixty pounds and a tall purple feather in the air without either ever touching the ground. While engaged in that, he also simultaneously executed a series of fighting moves that seemed to be a blend of several disciplines; Human, Vulcan, Klingon and many others.
It was an impressive display of power, control and elegance that explained why his new Chief looked like he’d been chiseled from granite. It also explained why the majority of the gathered crowd was comprised of the Enterprise’s female crew. Knowing how much older Forelni was gave the Captain a twinge of guilt for not keeping himself in a little better shape.
“I wish I could look a tenth that good when I’m approaching my one hundreds,” McCoy remarked. “And it looks like he’s had cause to stay in shape over the decades.”
Kirk noticed the scars that had caught McCoy’s attention and wondered. Those scars, no matter how old, could easily be removed. Yet, he kept them anyway. They told a story of the battles he’d fought. Was that why he did not remove them? Was it pride in having earned them in the first place? He made a mental note to inquire about them later and watched the rest of the workout in silence.
After a few more minutes Forelni lobbed the ball high, waved his other hand gently under the feather to lift it a few inches higher and then executed a series of spinning kicks that culminated in a fighting crouch. His left arm fully extended, his hand in a fist save the index finger which was fully extended. His right arm extended straight out and up, hand clawed with the tips of the fingers forming a cup. A second later the ball landed in the cupped right hand and the tip of the feather settled on the extended finger of the left hand. Both actions occurred simultaneously and neither object or his hands seemed to bounce or react to the impact in any way.
Forelni held the pose, keeping both ball and feather in place without either moving a millimeter, for a full ten seconds before allowing a slight grin to form on his face. Deftly rolling his hand around the ball to gently settle it down on the mat while clasping the feather between two finger, he stood up and bowed slightly as the crowd applauded. With a flourish he bowed once more as he presented the feather to Uhura.
“My compliments, Lieutenant.”
“Thank you, Commander,” she took the offered plume as he gathered up a towel and wrapped it around his neck.
“That was quite impressive, Commander,” Kirk said as he and McCoy walked up. “You do this every night?”
“Back when I first learned it I practiced every day, Sir,” Forelni replied. “But after a few decades I only do this a couple of times a month, just to stay in practice. Or if I’m feeling a little out of balance with the universe I might throw in an extra session. That is the real purpose behind the exercise, keeping both body and mind in balance.”
“That sounds almost Vulcan to me,” McCoy observed.
“I suppose it is,” Forelni agreed. “Then again I think every species has a lot more in common with each other than they are comfortable admitting to. I’d be happy to teach some of it to you both. I promise it’ll much easier than what I was doing here tonight.”
“No thanks,” McCoy waved his hands. “I’d be in traction for a month.”
“I could use a sparring partner, Commander, maybe you could slip in one or two things as we go along?”
“It would be my pleasure Captain…”
An alarm went off startling everyone in the room except Forelni.
“…but I have a prior engagement, perhaps another evening?” Forelni concluded before addressing the room. “There is no need to be alarmed. This is a security drill and the alarm is only sounding in here to let me know it is underway. My apologies. Please carry on.”
“Seems an odd time to spring a drill.” McCoy remarked.
“Can you think of a better time than when the Chief is supposedly otherwise occupied?” Forelni slipped on a black tunic. “They’ve got just about another ten seconds…”
The alarm suddenly shut off.
“Security to Chief Forelni,” blared from a nearby wall speaker. Forelni padded over to hit the switch.
“Forelni here. Go Michaelson.”
“Intruder discovered on Deck Fourteen, sir. In custody.”
“And four seconds earlier than I thought, well done. How is Mr. Riley?”
“Disappointed, sir,” the laughter in Michaelson’s voice carried through.
“I’m sure he is,” Forelni chuckled in reply. “Tell him I’ll expect my bottle of Irish Whiskey to be delivered to my cabin shortly after our next port of call.”
“That’s why it took us a little longer, Chief. He tried to fool us into thinking he wasn’t the intruder until after the deadline you set so he could collect a bottle of Etalyian wine from you.”
“Did he now? Put him on.”
“Riley here, Sir.”
“Mr. Riley, did you lie to my security team and try to fool them into thinking you weren’t the intruder they were looking for instead of giving up as soon as you were contacted?”
“Aye, Sir.”
“Well done, young man,” Forelni replied, shocking everyone within earshot of both ends of the conversation. “Cancel that bottle of whiskey and report to my quarters in one hour to collect your bottle of wine. Michaelson, I’ll expect a full action report on this drill in ninety minutes. Forelni out.”
Forelni turned from the wall to face the incongruous looks on Kirk’s and McCoy’s faces.
“I better keep an eye on that boy,” he said. “At this rate he’ll either become an Admiral or a master criminal. Good evening, Captain, Doctor.”
Kirk chuckled as Forelni departed.
“That wasn’t the reaction I was expecting from you, Jim.”
“Bones, in the two weeks since he’s been here, he has whipped Security into shape like none of his predecessors have before. And yes, I like his style too.”
“Enough to bet on it?”
“And what are we wagering on, Bones?”
“The Galactic Grandmaster Chess Tournament.”
“I’m not sure I follow.”
“Jim, you really need to pay more attention,” McCoy replied. “It’s the talk of the ship. Both Spock and Forelni are in the tournament and both have reached the quarterfinals. As they are in opposite brackets, the only way they can meet would be in the finals. They’re saying it would be held on the ship if they both make it.”
“I knew Spock was in, I didn’t realize Forelni was too,” Kirk admitted.
“Well, the betting pool is getting hot and heavy on both of them or either of them making it that far. There’s no telling how crazy it will get if they both make it in.”
“My money’s on Spock,” Kirk said with only the slightest tint of doubt.
“I’ll take that bet, Captain,” McCoy pounced. “A bottle of Saurian Brandy says they meet in the finals and our Prince Forelni walks away with the crown.”
“Very well, Bones, I’ll take your brandy off your hands.”
McCoy snorted as he walked away just as the wall speaker whistled for attention.
“Bridge to Captain Kirk,” Spock’s voice carried across the room.
“Speak of the Devil,” McCoy called out just before disappearing through the deck’s doors.
“Kirk here, what is it Spock?”
“We have received a priority message from Starfleet Command. A Federation Ambassador and his party have been taken hostage on Kallita Five near the Romulan neutral zone. We have been ordered to Starbase 11 to pick up Ambassador Kleine and take him to Kallita to begin negotiation for the release of the hostages.”
So much for my workout, Kirk thought.
“Very well, Spock, set course for Starbase 11 and takes up to Warp 6. Assemble the command staff in the briefing room in one hour. Kirk out.”
Riley will have to wait for his bottle of wine, Kirk mused as he headed out of Recreation. He couldn’t help but wonder if he was about to see exactly what his new Security Chief could do in a real-life scenario. As he entered the turboshaft and the doors snapped shut behind him he suddenly felt sorry for the hostage-takers.

The Del Rio Series: Through The Superversive Lens
For the past week I’ve been talking about the concept of “Superversive” and for the most part it is a construct of the science fiction/fantasy world. But it is not limited to SF/F at all. In other words: Yes, Virginia, you can write superversive in other genres besides SF/F!
For example, take a look at my Del Rio series. It is a mystery/political thriller series set in present day. More notably, it doesn’t have a hint of sci-fi or fantasy in it. A little Navajo tribal lore in the first book, yes, but other than that it adheres to the normal rules.
But is still fits the Superversive mold.
Jack Del Rio, yes he shares the name with a certain NFL coach who was a favorite NFL player of mine when I first cooked up this series and need a name for my MC, is an FBI Agent. Del RIo’s speciality is domestic counter-terrorism.
[image error]He is your standard run-of-the-mill agent and guy for that matter. He’s not looking to save the world and be the hero, he’s just trying to make it a safer place by doing his job. In the early stages of Reservations, the first book of the series, we find out Jack is something of a driven man. He sees evil, he stops it. He single-handedly saved the life of the Queen of England from a deadly ambush during his posting to London and that event has made him a rising star in the Bureau.
So when the Director of Del Rio’s department gets a call for help from the President of the Navajo Nation to stop what appears to be a string of political assasinations on the Navajo Reservation, Del Rio is sent to the Four Corners to get the job done.
Once there, Del Rio is thrust into a world where the people on the three reservations – Navajo, Zuni and Hopi – are as distrustful of each other as they are of the people outside of their lands. He is teamed up with the Navajo Nation Police Department’s Officer Lucy Chee as he begins his investigation.
Suspects are interviewed, crime scenes are examined and the elusive killer escapes capture once before claiming a third victim. The killer is finally caught, after two failed attempts to kill the Navajo President, but the victory comes at a heavy cost.
Even though evil claims some victories in the story, it ultimately fails. There are other superversive elements to the first book, but if I tell you what they are, I’ll give away way to many surprises and ruin reading the story for you.
[image error]Del Rio’s story continues in Betrayals. In the second book, some of the foreshadowing of a greater conspiracy that Del Rio was unknowingly a part of for most of his life. As the title conveys, there will be many betrayals in this book. Some good, some not so much.
But the superversive theme holds as Del Rio starts to unravel who is involved in a plot to overthrow, shall we say, betray, the government of the United States from within. (No, I didn’t write Betrayals during the 2016 election, but someties I wonder if I pulled a Nostradamus when I originally wrote the story as a screenplay back in 1998.)
[image error]In the finale of the series (and I have to be vague less I give away too much of the plot, sorry), Endgames, Del Rio will become the hunted as Evil seems to have the upperhand. I even allow Del Rio’s shining armour of good and righteousness slip in this book and with good reason. No man, no matter how heroic he might be, could pass through the test I put Del Rio through in this book and emerge unscathed.
But, damaged as he might be, he still shines though in the end. And that is very superversive indeed.
Check out the series for yourself and let me know what you think!

The Timeless Series: Through The Superversive Lens
Superversive writing has heroes, romance, conflict and above all else, an ending that makes the readerhapp they spent their time reading thr story.
Today i wanted to run the first two books of the Timeless series, The Timeless and Secret of the Sphinx, through the Superversive filter. As for the rest of the series, barring anymore disasters (and that is questionable at best in 2020, isn’t it?) the final four books of the series should be out by the end of the year.
[image error]So lets take a look at the first two, starting with The Timeless.
We begin with an intrepid young author, right out of school, on a mission from the solar system’s governor to travel to a prison on Pluto. His task is to worm information out of the prison’s infamous inmate, Little John Singapore. Singapore is the First Mate of The Timeless, an 18th Century three-masted pirate ship capable of sailing through air and space, on water and anywhere in time.
Oh yes, did I mention that this is a steampunk, young adult adventure that any reader from age 10 to 100 will enjoy reading? It is set in a future when our galaxy has wandered into an area of space that has literally turned out the lights. No electronic technology works now and only the discovery of Aether allows humanity to travel about.
[image error]Little John Singapore
The Captain of the Timeless is Rock Congo and he is every ounce a swashbuckling pirate and Governor Garabaldi wants to know where Congo can be found and why he has reneged on his agreement to help capture insterstellar thief Duchess Moran.
Moran is not from Earth, but she has become tired of the Earth-led Alliance interferring in her theivery. So she decides that the best way to end that interference is to change Earth’s past so that the Alliance never forms.
Garabaldi has become aware of her plans and captures the Timeless and her crew. He gives them the option to either track down Moran and stop her, or off to prison on Pluto for immediate execution, the punishment for pirates.
The Timeless sets sail for ancient Sparta, where Moran has plans to kidnap Leonidas before he can make his stand at the Hot Gates at Thermopylae against the Persians. Congo, Singapore and the Timeless’ crew arrive just after Leonidas has been kidnapped and sets off in pursuit.
[image error]Moran and Congo come face to face for the first time in Ancient Greece and Singapore sees in an instant that they are all in a load of trouble. The Captain and the theif have fallen for one another and that is only going to make matters worse. Moran flees as Leonidas is rescued and history is preserved.
But, as Secret of the Sphinx opens, we know Moran has not yet given up on her quest to remove Earth from her path. Only know she is back in Ancient Egypt looking for a rare gem that has the power to raise an unstopable army of the undead.
A visit to the lost library in Alexandria leads to a secret chamber within the Sphinx, a chamber that will tell Moran exactly where, and when, to find this powerful gem.
[image error]Moran gains possession of the gem and unleashes the horde as the Timeless arrives on scene. While the ship and her crew battle the attacking undead. Congo and Singapore try to capture Moran and the gem. They get the gem, but Moran once again makes her escape, the undead army is banished and history remains intact. For now.
The pursuit of Moran continues, with many twists and turns and all of it very superversive indeed.
Check out the first two books below and get ready for the final four adventures.

When The Gods Fell: Through The Superversive Lens
I debated doing this book at all for this series of blog posts because it will be a series of several books. To be fair, the entire series needs to be judged at the same time because it has a wide-ranging scope. I mean, a 65-million year story arc is kind of hard to break down in just the first book. But for the time period it covers, When The Gods Fell ticks enough boxes to qualify as a Superversive tale.
First, humanity has succeeded in landing a manned mission on Mars and is taking its first steps toward permanently establishing residency on the faraway red planet. The crew is multi-national, giving the reader a sense that in about two decades the human race has actually gotten its shit together on is ready to fulfill its destiny.
Which destiny that will be is the point of this first book, because the crew is about to encounter a mysterious woman named Oracle Delphi and she is about to lay the mother of all alternate history stories on them.
[image error]Oracle is an energy being who was once, roughly 65 million years ago, a humanoid woman living among the Castes that made up the people of Olympus, the planet we now know as Mars.
The rulers of those castes are names that we recognize today – Zeus, Yahweh, Ra, Odin, Kali, Lucifer and many, many more. Zeus sits upon the throne as the leader of all Olympus and, for the most part, the planet is at peace.
But all is not as peaceful as it might seem. Plans within plans, deceit upon deceit, lurks in every dark shadow of Olympus and even though he has been warned, Zeus is unable to thwart the machinations alligned against him and his throne.
In a very Superversive way, Zeus will not allow evil to win and finds a way through his trusted friend, Yahweh, to save as much of Olympus as possible even as the planet is decimated in a cataclysmic event that destroys all life on the surface.
[image error]Zeus’ solution, how that impacted the origins of life on Earth and what the future of humanity will be are addressed somewhat in this first book and will be explored further as the series progresses.
But the book is still superversive in that it has heroes rising to the occassion, it has setbacks for good and moments where evil does prevail, and it has some religous themes. But it still leaves the readerwith hope for the future of these characters and this world they have entered.
One point regarding said religous themes. As Declan Finn pointed out in his review :
“Even in the book, the Oracle telling the story said that yes, there was a Deity to whom these “gods” prayed. And I saw no mention of one of the kids becoming a carpenter. If you’re that concerned, unbunch your panties and just relax. This is not Dan Brown. Paolinelli is not poking at your faith with malice aforethought.”
…and that means I’m not preaching at you. I’m not setting one faith above another, and as this is an alt-history sci-fi/fantasy mash-up. I remind you that this is a work of fiction, not to be taken as me saying “this is how things really happened”.
What this story is, is just a story meant to entertain you, to help you escape the anxieties of the real world for just a few hours.
And that is very superversive.
Check it out for yourself and see if you agree. And yes, I will get back to this series as soon as I can.
