When sixteen-year-old Hannah Sheraton is arrested for the murder of her stepgrandfather, the chief justice of the California Supreme court, her distraught mother turns to her old college roommate, Josie Baylor-Bates, for help. Josie, once a hot-shot criminal defense attorney, left the fast track behind for a small practice in Hermosa Beach, California. But Hannah Sheraton intrigues her and, when the girl is charged as an adult, Josie cannot turn her back. But the deeper she digs the more Josie realizes that politics, the law and family relationships create a combustible and dangerous situation. When the horrible truth is uncovered it can save Hannah Sheraton or destroy them both.
“This story was inspired by a case my husband handled. As a superior court judge he had to sentence a minor to life in prison. It made me wonder how I felt about minors arrested for violent crimes. Are they most vulnerable among us – capable or horrible violence, perceived as adults and yet emotionally still children?” Rebecca Forster
“An enthralling read, with colorful, well-developed characters and the unique atmosphere of the California beach communities.” Nancy Taylor Rosenberg
“Blending complex psychological character portraits with spot-on accurage courtroom drmaa, Forster’s riveting legal thriller keeps the plot twists coming until the last, satisfying page.” – Alafair Burke

How to Be Successful: Like Michael Jordan, Take the Shot

If you Google ‘How to Be Successful’, you’ll see that a lot of people are searching for the answer to this question.
It seems like a question that could have a lot of answers.
But I’m convinced there’s really only one that counts. You take the shot. Keep trying. When one path doesn’t work, take another one.
The people who succeed the most in life are also the ones who fail the most. Failure – trying things over and over again – until one works, is what leads to success.
The hurdle is in the first step. Gathering up the courage to make a change, take a stance, tackle a goal.
I wonder if most of the difficulty comes from not believing in ourselves. Doubting our ability to follow through.
But deciding to try is exactly what we need to do.
Michael Jordan said, “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. . .I’ve failed over and over again and that is why I succeed.”
Think of that. 9000 shots. People were watching, from the stands, on TV, for every one of those 9000 shots that he missed. Those had to be painful moments.
But if he hadn’t taken those shots, he would never have made the successful ones.
I think of this quote often. Any time I’m afraid of what people might say if I end up being wrong or don’t reach my goal, whether it involves writing or working out.
John D. Rockefeller is said to have applied for a job in accounting 300 times until he finally got a yes. Think of that. 299 rejections. 299 Nos before he got a yes.
For me, writing has required my willingness to make my 9000 shots. I’ve been writing all of my adult life, and the landscape of publishing has changed dramatically during this time. I’ve had peaks and valleys, highs and lows. And I’ve had to reevaluate along the way, decide if I wanted to embrace the change or stay in a place where I felt stuck.
Ultimately, we need to act on the things we care about and want in our lives. I remind myself regularly to take the shot. Some I’ll make. Some I won’t. Tenacity is what will keep me going for the next one.
Is there something you’re debating acting on in your life? Starting an exercise routine? Adding juicing to your nutrition plan? Mending fences with a loved one? Leaving a job you don’t love anymore?
Take the shot. That’s how to be successful.

Natural Beauty with Coconut Oil Uses
I could be a walking test market for most of the products that have touted their benefits in major magazines and on TV. It’s hard to resist those hooks – makes fine lines and wrinkles disappear, smoother skin overnight!
I’ve found plenty of lotions and creams that I like, but I finally found one that I love. A natural beauty remedy. Coconut oil. Just regular old made by nature coconut oil.
How to be beautiful? Many of the best beauty secrets are found in nature’s best.
I had read about some of the benefits of coconut oil in nutrition books and articles over the years. But I hadn’t thought about using it for skin care until I ran across a jar in a health food store labeled for skin and hair and decided to give it a try. Coconut oil at regular room temperature is a solid like Crisco.
Every winter, my skin gets a case of the extra dry blues. Still, it seemed like a crazy idea. Straight oil? But the first night I rubbed it onto my face, I could almost hear my skin sigh. It soaked right in, and my face didn’t look like I’d just globbed oil on it. It looked. . .nourished.
And so I used it again the next night. And the next. I kept thinking I would reach a point where my face would say enough, but that wasn’t the case. I now use it every night as my main heavy moisturizer.
At some point, I considered other coconut oil benefits and decided to try it as an overall body moisturizer and bought a big jar for the tub. I apply it while in the bath, and it chases Winter dry off with a big stick. Just be willing to towel the tub clean of oil when you’re done.
You can also use coconut oil for hair conditioning in the same way you would use a conditioning mask. Apply it to your hair and leave on for an hour or so before shampooing it out.
Sometimes, the most effective products aren’t always the most expensive. A nice size jar of coconut oil is about $12. And I love the idea of feeding my skin something that I would also eat!

A Snow Day in Virginia

School is out again today in our county! My girls are going to forget how to get back into the routine. They’ve had a week of snow days recently.
I’m a warm weather girl, but the snow is beautiful today. Soft and fluffy. Around six inches of it at our house. It’s been fun watching the dogs enjoy it this morning. They’ve been romping through the yard, chasing each other like kids on a playground. I imagine they’ll be ready for a nap soon!

Be YOUnique

Remember high school and the moment you realized that fitting in was the easiest way to avoid feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable? That you needed to get on the right team, meet SAT expectations, answer a teacher’s questions without looking dumb?
I do. And those were some awkward days.
I went to a very small elementary school where I knew everyone in my class. I was there for Kindergarten through Seventh grade so by my last year there, my natural shyness had given way to the fact that everyone at the school felt kind of like family.
But for the eighth grade, I had to take the school bus to the Junior High School. It was connected to the High School, and altogether there were almost 2000 students from across the county. My shyness and lack of self-confidence completely took over, and just the act of walking down the hallways to my next class became something I had to force myself to do. I called my mom nearly every day of that first year, pleading with her to come and get me.
Sometimes, it’s hard for me to believe that I felt so unable to fit in with my new surroundings. But I did. And it was a very painful period in my life.
Looking back on it, I think the turning point came for me when I began to realize that the solution wasn’t trying to fit in. Forcing myself to be something I wasn’t. The turning point came when I started to see myself as good at some things, not so good at others. And accepting what it was that made me: me.
I loved to read. I wasn’t great at math. I liked being around people who made me laugh.
As it turns out, high school was a pretty good training ground for the realities of life ahead. We’re happiest when we are our true self. When we surround ourselves with people who appreciate what it is we have to offer the world. When we reject the reality of putting ourselves with people who want to change us.
We all have different gifts and abilities. Let the world see yours. Be YOUnique.

Not Every Day is Filled With Chocolate

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every minute of our day was filled with only the things we really love to do? Like eating really good chocolate. Reading for hours under a favorite shade tree.
Let’s admit it. Yes, it would.
But the truth is, there are things in our lives we need to take care of on a regular basis, responsibilities we need to meet, a to do list we need to complete.
And that’s not a bad thing, really. Structure and taking care of the business of life give us a sense of order.
There are days when I’d like to walk out of my bedroom and leave the bed unmade. But I almost never do because I like the feeling I get when I come back in at the end of a long day and find it neat and inviting.
So, like the little guy in the picture above, there are things we do in our daily lives just because we need to. When we can check those boxes, the chocolate and the reading under the shade tree are all the more rewarding.

On Being a Turtle

Positive thought for the day.
In some ways, it’s really hard to be a turtle. The very shell that protects him also makes it difficult to move very fast if he’s on dry land. But if he’s in the environment that works best for him, he can move as beautifully as any fish. With grace and determination to get where he needs to go.
It’s important that we put ourselves in the environment that works best for us. That allows us to move through our days with grace and determination to get where we want to go. And be who we are.
Why plod around on dry land if we’re meant to swim like a fish?
