On Being Happy Alone

Once You're Truly

“Once you’re truly happy with yourself alone, that’s when you are safe to find the right person to spend the rest of your life with.” ― Tyler Perry

I love books! From my earliest memories, I loved being read to and then reading practically every book in my elementary school library. There’s something about taking a little trip into a wonderful story that is its own unique pleasure. Over the years, my favorite authors have provided me with glimpses into worlds I would never have known had I not picked up their books. From Beverley Cleary to Lavyrle Spencer to Jodi Piccoult to Anita Shreve and so many others, I am grateful they chose to become storytellers. A great story has the power to move, change and shape its readers. To me, that’s an honorable calling and a task I aspire to.

Mistakes and Forgiveness

A MISTAKE DOESN'T HAVE TO

We all make mistakes. Asking for forgiveness takes courage. But it’s the difference between regret and moving forward.

Go See Jack Ryan – Shadow Recruit

01

Jack Ryan – Shadow Recruit pretty much sums up the reason I still like to go to movies in the theatre.

This one has all the right elements. Engrossing story led by a really likable character that you’re rooting for from the very beginning. Jack Ryan(Chris Pine). He’s both hot and a little geeky, always an appealing combination.

To say there’s never a dull moment would be an understatement. At the start of the story we see Jack Oxford on the day the Twin Towers are hit. He watches on a TV with other students while America’s history is forever changed. And there we have his motivation for the path he takes from there.

Unknown

Other actors in the film include Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner and Kenneth Branagh. Knightley easily convinces us why Jack would lay down his life for her. Costner and Branagh are such great lead actors themselves that it almost feels like we’re getting bonus stars here.

I definitely hope there will be a Part Two! If you’re looking for a great two hour escape, go see Jack Ryan – Shadow Recruit!

Getting Fit and Humble Pie

Frauenpower

It’s really hard to admit when you’re out of shape, isn’t it?

I admit it. I’m out of shape. I do a passable amount of cardio, elliptical and outdoor cycling.

But weight-training?

I’m so out of shape.

You know how it goes. Life is full of responsibility. And during certain stretches of time, some elbow their way to the front of the room and declare themselves more important than some of the things we’ve already proven to be good for us.

Weight-training is one of these things for me. I actually really enjoy doing it. Especially in a gym where other people are walking advertisements for its benefits. Who can deny that their visible results are motivating?

But somewhere during the past couple of years, this particular good-for-me-thing got elbowed out of the way. And once it was firmly out of sight, I told myself better not to invite it back. Takes too much time. Can’t possibly fit it in. You know.

The naysayer inside me finally made itself heard recently, and maybe the noise in my life had momentarily lowered to a volume I could actually hear.

So I joined a gym – L.A. Fitness – and signed up with a trainer. It sounds indulgent. It’s not that I don’t know what to do, but it’s a fact that I am not going to push myself as much as someone paid to do it will.

My first session was with Mike, a perfect example of what can be achieved if you actually use your gym membership instead of allotting your card to a back-up form of i.d. should you misplace your driver’s license.

I could tell you that I aced every set of thigh-burning, ab-torturing exercises he laid out for me on the first morning, but I would be lying.

A more fitting description of the experience would be humbling and eye-opening.

Maybe that’s the first mountain then, suffering through the humiliation of acknowledging my own lack of fitness by choking down a very large piece of humble pie. I lived to tell about it, and hopefully, it won’t be long before I leave that weakling in the rearview mirror behind.Health in your hands and legs.

I’ve had two more sessions since then, both challenging if not quite as alarming. I feel like I’m on the path again. And even if I have a long way to go, I’m moving forward, one rep at a time. I have to believe that’s a far better place to be than in neutral, telling myself I’m fine without it.

Do you have any fitness goals for yourself? Tell us about them. We’d love to hear.

Pesky Parking Solved

2014-01-17 10.16.36

It seems as if every day I find a new use for my iPhone. Which, to be honest, seems unlikely since I already have 1,044 different uses for it. A slight exaggeration, maybe, but not far off base.

Its latest attempt at making itself completely indisposable? Pesky Parking. Yes, I discovered today that I can now pay for meter parking with my phone.

I may be late to this party for those of you who call big cities home, but better late than never as they say.  No more fumbling for change at the bottom of my purse and coming up short a quarter. No more going inside the closest store to get change for a five.

Here’s all I had to do: download the ParkMobile app from itunes. Enter my payment information. Paypal is an option. Tell the app how long I want to park and enter the meter id number. The app then sets a timer which I can check to make sure I don’t run out of time. It even sends me an email reminder when I have fifteen minutes left. Wa-la. Pesky Parking solved.

I’m glad there are really smart people sitting around thinking of new ways for us to use this incredible tool we carry around with us twenty-four-seven. It’s a little like Christmas everyday.

Broccoli Believer

Broccoli Believer

TO LIVE WELL. . .a series of posts dedicated to sharing anything I’ve learned along the way about how to increase the physical and emotional quality of our lives.

At first glance, this is obviously a pile of newly harvested broccoli. As a child, I’m sure I would have looked at this and said yuck, because I think somewhere along the line, children figure out that’s what they’re supposed to say about all vegetables, especially broccoli.

At this point in my life though, I think something very different when I see this picture.

About twelve years ago, I determined to learn as much as I could about nutrition as a way to address some current health needs of my children. Starting out, I thought I knew a decent amount about the potential benefits of certain foods, but now I realize I didn’t know very much at all.

We were all told that vegetables were good for us. That’s an easy assumption. But which ones are best? And how should we eat them? What can some do for us that others can’t?

If you’re new to the veggie fan club, start with green. The way I see it, green is gold where nutrition is concerned. Not only is it high in Vitamin C and fiber, it also contains compounds that help our bodies fight cancer.

Too many of us have friends and relatives stricken with this horrible disease. I think we have to ask ourselves why it is has become so prevalent. I believe much of it starts with what we’re eating and what we’re not eating.

Fast food, convenience food, packaged food, chemical-laden foods are a constant temptation in our lives. It takes a pretty determined effort to avoid them. But I have to believe it’s worth it.

Juicing is one way in which I’ve chosen to broaden my own nutrition. My goal is to juice once a day, using as many green vegetables as I can. The recipe below is one I came up with that features broccoli. I like it over ice. Give it a try!
