Welcome to the Weird West – and a Kickstarter to explore

Altered Instinct kindly did an interview with me to highlight our Kickstarter and anthology!

Last year, as readers of the blog may know, I had my first Weird West tale published – The Clockwork Cowboy in the Hideous Progeny anthology from Writerpunk Press. It was my first step into a Wild West frontier remade into a world where anything was possible – and it’s a world which Diane Morrison has been exploring for some time. She stops by the blog to chat about the genre – just as she is closing in on the finishing line for a Kickstarter for an anthology in the genre, Gunsmoke & Dragonfire.

I’ve been awaiting this excitedly, and it’s here! Storycast Rob (Rob Edwards) read one of Gunsmoke & Dragonfire’s stories, “Lonesome” by Carrie Gessner, on his podcast!  I think it was amazing. Star Wars is Really a Cautionary Tale About Devoting All Technological Advancements to Death

By Emily Asher-Perrin

It’s called Star Wars. Not Star Trek, not Star Peace, not Star Friends, not even Star Tales. This gargantuan fictional universe is labeled with a title that guarantees the ability to travel space… andnear-constant warfare.

We can debate the relative okay-ness of this focus from a moral standpoint, sure. But in reality, I think that Star Wars is accidentally teaching us the greatest lesson of all: It’s depicting what a universe looks like when you dedicate all of your research and technological advancements to war and destruction, and unwittingly showing us what an incredibly dark place that universe is. Because the Star Wars universe is a fun fictional playground for sure, a great place to build weird and wonderful stories… but it’s not a good place. Not by a longshot.

Video Premiere: Interview with Ron S. Friedman

Missed the livestream of my interview with Ron S. Friedman? I’m streaming the replay live on my YouTube channel this morning! Chat with me as the video plays & ask your questions!

Kickstarter link: http://kck.st/2ASWKje Gunsmoke & Dragonfire is an anthology of fantasy western stories. I had the pleasure of interviewing Ron S. Friedman, author of “Raiders of the Lost World,” one of the stories in the anthology!

Ron is an Israeli-Canadian writer who adds some genuine star power to this anthology with this hybrid pulp fiction tale! His novel, Typhoon Time, was an Amazon.ca #1 bestseller in Time Travel; his collection Escape Velocity was a Calgary Herald #1 Bestseller and a #1 Kobo bestseller in Space Opera; and his short story “Game Not Over” was an Aurora Award finalist in 2016. His work has appeared in Galaxy’s Edge, Daily Science Fiction, and numerous other magazines and anthologies. He has co-edited three anthologies himself, and received ten Honorable Mentions in the Writers of the Future competition. A classic overachiever, he has also received an Aurora for Best Fan-Related Work, and was nominated again this year for his Quora blog on Astronomy and Planetary Science, which has had more than 1.7 million views. In his day job, he is a senior Information Tech Analyst, who served during the Gulf War as an NCO in Intelligence in the Israeli Air Force. Plus, he’s a member of SFWA, IFWA, SFCanada and a former board member for the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association.
