Don’t Abandon People in Red States

I overhead a couple of high school students this morning talking about their college options.

“I don’t think I’m going to apply to Grinnel, anymore,” one said.

“Or Rice,” the other chimed in. “Screw them.”

They were looking at the map of US states that are either implementing or likely to implement bans on abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade. The kids were eliminating schools within imperiled states from their lists of college application candidates.

Other folks I know are looking into moving from red states to blue states, or out of the United States altogether. As one writer friend put it, “I was thinking to go to Canada when Trump won, but didn’t want to lose hope. Now, I can’t see raising my daughter here.”

I get it. It feels like America is moving backwards. Where we used to lead the world in granting human rights, we are now the sole outlier among developed nations denying a national right to an abortion. Let’s not even get into our unique and ever-worsening denial of national healthcare, or our inability to deny weapons to those who shouldn’t be carrying them.

Team Human ep. 211: Nick Kroll

Actor, comedian, and Big Mouth creator Nick Kroll argues for the power of comedy in challenging times.

🎙 In his monologue, Rushkoff wonders if adults may have lost the ability to tell our kids that our adult lives are better than their tortured adolescence.

The Tail Wagging the Doge

One of the most common questions I’ve been getting this week is from young investors (they wouldn’t call themselves investors, but they are) wondering why their crypto holdings are going down as fast or faster than the stock market.

“But I bought all this Ethereum because I knew the market was about to crash,” one Coinbase trader complained to me.

“Biden was printing money by giving all those stimulus checks and unemployment benefits,” another explained, sharing his rationale for accumulating bitcoin and NFTs. “I knew there was too much in circulation, and I was right. But bitcoin was supposed to be a hedge against inflation.”

Sorry, but bitcoin wasn’t supposed to be a hedge against inflation. Nor was it intended to be a non-correlated investment strategy — something that moves in the opposite direction of the stock market.

Breaking News: Stuff actually costs a lot.

Yes, gas prices are up. I saw a woman fill up her old station wagon with premium the other day, and her pump total went over $90.

“Ouch!” I said to her, smiling.

“This damn inflation will be the end of us all,” she replied, then added “Let’s go Brandon,” (meaning Joe Biden should be blamed for this outrage) as she drove off.

Of course, the reason why gas is so expensive has less to do with Joe Biden or even the war in Ukraine than the oil industry itself. People stopped driving and flying during Covid, so oil producers reduced their exploration, drilling and output. Now that people are active again demand has returned, but supplies will take at least a few months to catch up. When demand outstrips supply, prices rise.

Don’t Hide the Tech

I don’t like nice interfaces. I never have. I always found technologies easier to use when they don’t try to humanize themselves for me. Worse, when they do try to make themselves softer and squishier and “easier” for humans, I get concerned about losing touch with what they’re really doing for us and to us.

It Doesn’t Get Better?

I found myself actually bothered by Elon Musk’s tweets today. For the most part, I’ve ignored him the same way I ignore most of what happens on that platform. I check out my own highly curated list of users for links to interesting articles I may have missed, and try not to get fooled into reading the provocations from people looking for attention.
