What is Christmas About?

Picture Every year I complain bitterly.  My mother-in-law insists on inviting a bunch of people for breakfast, arriving at 8am.  Included are three lots of neighbours, and a few friends.

I think this is a lovely idea – sharing Christmas.

Except she also insists that we be over at her house before this 8am time.  We need to be over there so we can exchange gifts and have our festivities before her guests at 8am (because it is rude to open presents in front of guests).

That usually means I have to get up at 5am on Christmas morning, so that the kids can have time to open their presents from Santa, time to open their presents from their mum and dad, time to play with their presents, time to get dressed, time to pack up the car with all the things we need to take with us, time to finish preparing the foods we need to take with us and stack them all in cooler bags so that they make the journey to lunch in the Australian summer.

Every year I complain bitterly at this.

Two years ago we were making our way to my in-laws’ house at a very early hour on Christmas morning – before most people were awake.  There were only a handful of other cars on the road.  I was yawning madly and the kids were bouncing in the back of the car as we approached a set of lights.  A car had parked awkwardly on one corner and four people were standing next to the car.  I looked at them and wondered what the hell were they doing?  Why had they parked their car there?  Why were they standing there?

As we waited for the lights to turn green it suddenly became clear.

There was a woman with three children – aged from about ten to fifteen.  As we watched she reached into the car and withdrew several large bunches of flowers and gave them to the kids, and they walked ten metres from the lights to a small white cross at the side of the road where flowers were already placed.

Three days previously a father-of-three had been killed at that set of lights after a drunk driver had run a red light.  On this Christmas morning, we witnessed the pilgrimage of his widow and children as they came to say Merry Christmas to their father.

Their father who would never come home.

Their father who they would never see again.

And here I was bitching about getting up early to see my family.

So as I wish you all a Merry Christmas, I would like to remind you of two things:

1.  Be thankful at being able to spend the day with your family.  Many don’t have that opportunity ever again.

And…

2.  (Most importantly) make sure you are not the reason that another family don’t have a loved one to celebrate with.  Be responsible this holiday season.  Don’t drink and drive.  Drive safely and carefully.

Merry Christmas.

Love always,

Renae Kaye.

20QQ - Lisa Harris and Lisa Henry

Today, for my final lot of 20 Quick Questions of Australian authors, I have up:
Lisa Harris and Lisa Henry.

I swear I didn't do that on purpose!

I sent out a bunch of 20QQ requests, and as the authors got back to me, I grabbed two and paired them up.  And for some reason the two Lisa's were last.  Jinx!  Let's see how many of their answers are the same too.

1.  What state do you live in?
Lisa Harris:  The chilly cold Australian Capital Territory. Yep, I’m the prime minister’s neighbour. Lol.
Lisa Henry:  Queensland.

2.  What’s the bird emblem of your state?
Lisa Harris:  A gang-gang cockatoo. Interesting name!
Lisa Henry:  The brolga.

3.  Did you have to look that up?
Lisa Harris:  Yes. But it’s great to know I’ve learned something new today.
Renae:  I live to serve...
Lisa Henry:  Absolutely.

4.  Favourite season?
Lisa Harris:  Spring. There’s nothing like the first blooms of the season, watching as the days get longer and warmer. Love it.
Lisa Henry:  Winter! Having said that, I live in the tropics, so “winter” means “had to turn the fan off and put socks on”.

5.  Favourite ice cream flavour?
Lisa Harris:  Hokey Pokey.  Cos that’s what it’s all about. Hehe.
Renae:  You put your left hand in...  Great!  Now I'm singing that song!
Lisa Henry:  Chocolate.

6.  Favourite colour?
Lisa Harris:  Blue.
Lisa Henry:  Green.

7.  Three people from history you’d like to meet?
Lisa Harris:  Jesus (yes I want questions answered), Albert Einstein and one of my ancestors, First Fleeter Owen Cavanough.
Lisa Henry:  The characters in history I’m most interested in tend to be the ones I’d be scared to meet in real life – like Nero, or Henry VIII. Fascinating guys, but way too eager to execute people. And I’m not sure I’d like to meet the good guys either, like Gandhi or Mother Theresa. I already know I’m generally a terrible person, thanks for rubbing it in my face.  So I’m going to pick a scientist, a philosopher, and a writer: Charles Darwin, Voltaire, and Kurt Vonnegut.

8.  Do you prefer dinner parties, or raves?
Lisa Harris:  Dinner parties (as long as I’m not the one cooking). Too old to rave, but I have been known to rave on at times.
Lisa Henry:  Dinner parties. But not fancy dinner parties. I would be terrible at those. But I like talking with people and hearing stories, which is hard to do at a rave.

9.  Star sign?
Lisa Harris:  Aries.
Lisa Henry:  Aquarius.

10.  Morning bird, or night owl?
Lisa Harris:  Depends on what I’m doing. I work more productively in my job in the mornings, but when it comes to chilling out I love the night time.
Lisa Henry:  Night owl. I hear mornings are lovely, but I have no interest in participating in them.
Renae:  LOL!

11.  Preferred beverage?
Lisa Harris:  Coffee! And none of that instant stuff please.
Lisa Henry:  Turkish apple tea. It is the greatest.
Renae:  **googling**

12.  Pizza, burger or chinese?
Lisa Harris:  Chinese.
Lisa Henry: Chinese. Much more variety than a pizza or burger!

13.  Beach, forest or mountains?
Lisa Harris:  Mountains. Grew up on the beach, and all I can recall is shark alarms going off all the time, and sand in very weird places.
Renae:  The sand... oh the sand...  My greatest nightmare.
Lisa Henry: Why can’t I have all the things? But beach, probably. Then forest. Then mountains.

14.  Author you admire?
Lisa Harris:  Too many to mention, but if I had to choose one, I’d say N. R. Walker.
Lisa Henry: There are so many great authors I could list here. In the m/m genre, autobuys for me include JP Barnaby, Heidi Cullinan, Alexis Hall, KJ Charles, and Amy Lane.

15.  Favourite book you’ve written?
Lisa Harris:  That’s like trying to choose one child over the other. The two stories I’ve published are both in my heart, and other stories I’ve collaborated on just as much.
Lisa Henry: Either When All the World Sleeps, because I love the melancholy, or Dark Space, because Brady was such a fun character to write with all his angst and self-sabotaging bullshit.

16.  Your next book release and when?
Lisa Harris:  His Personal Assistant, April 2015.
Lisa Henry: December 29! It’s called The Two Gentlemen of Altona, and it’s the first story in the Playing the Fool series that J.A. Rock and I wrote. It’s your basic story of an egg-obsessed Shakespeare-loving con man from rural Indiana, and the cranky FBI agent trying to detox from caffeine and sugar who is tasked to track him down and hang onto him until he can testify. We hope people have as much fun reading it as we did writing it!

17.  If you weren’t a writer, would you go mad?
Lisa Harris:  I want to say yes, except I think that sometimes the writing can make me a little loopy. Who else has conversations with themselves about plot points while in the shower? Watches people going about their daily lives as thoughts race through the head about how that scenario could fit in to their latest WIP?
Lisa Henry: No question. Writing is like free therapy. I can work out all my frustrations. Writers are like the kids who grew up and decided to keep their imaginary friends. It’s great!

18.  Greatest writing inspiration – pictures, people or plots?
Lisa Harris:  People mostly, and plots to a certain extent (or rather individual scenes/occurrences that might inspire a plot)
Lisa Henry: Pictures. I love writing flash fiction from a picture prompt, because anything can be happening.

19.  Most frustrating part of writing?
Lisa Harris:  Writers block without a doubt, edits coming a close second.
Lisa Henry:  Staying focussed enough to finish writing one thing instead of being distracted by shiny new ideas. My list of WIPs is out of control.

Renae and the Technicoloured Many Hats

Picture Several times a month I will be asked the question, “What do you do?”

The answer to this question changes depending on the context the question is asked in.  Sometimes it will be an old school friend wanting to find out what I’ve been doing for the last 15 years.  Sometimes it’s my husband’s work colleague.  Sometimes it’s the lady on the bus.To say I have a lot of hats is an understatement.  I think any mother has a lot of hats – and a lot of things to take care of.  I have my Mummy Hat, which deals with things like immunisations, nutrition and if it is basketball tonight.  I have my Housewife Hat (which I don’t believe is a derogatory term, and I’m proud to be a housewife).  This hat deals with whether there is food in the cupboard, if the plants need watering, if there is a shirt for my husband to wear or if the toilet can go another day before I have to clean it.  I also have my Family Hat, which deals with the extended family’s birthdays, checks up on sick parents and tries to work out if it’s been one month or two since I’ve heard from my brother.

It’s true to say I juggle my responsibilities.

So today, at the school gate as I was waiting to pick up my child, I was chatting with another mum and she asked, “What do you do?” I knew what she was asking.  So I answered honestly, although dishonestly, “I work from home.”

What she was really asking me, was if ever I needed to get a family member to pick up my kindy child in the middle of the day on the half-day per week our children have?  She’d just finished explaining to me that she was studying and working, so her husband usually did the school run.

The problem with answering the question of “What do you do?” honestly, is it can open a can of worms, because people hear a different answer.  So I thought (for fun) I would give you a rundown of my standard “What do you do?” responses, and how people mishear. Picture What do you do?

Me:  I’m a stay-at-home mother.
What they hear:  I sit at home all day, drink coffee, watch soapies and bludge off the government.

Me:  I’m a housewife.
What they hear:  I’m a downtrodden woman with no education.

Me:  I’m a mummy.
What they hear:  I smother my children with love and I live off my husband’s salary.

Me:  I’m a working mother.
What they hear:  My children are raised in daycare while I continue my career.

Me:  I work from home.
What they hear:  I do nothing at home all day and shop a lot.

Me:  I’m an author.
What they hear:  I’m unemployed.

Me:  I write books.
What they hear:  I would love to publish a book.

Me:  I’m an author, I write romance.
What they hear:  I dabble with unimportant fiction that only other uneducated housewives read.

Me:  I’m an author, I write fiction.
What they hear:  My husband is rich, so I pretend to write books.

Me:  I’m an author, I write gay romance.
What they hear:  I write porn.

Me:  I don’t do anything.
What they hear:  I’m a pathetic liar.
The thing is, I am proud to be a Mummy.  I’m proud to be a housewife.  And I’m goddamn proud to be an author of gay romance.  For the last seven years, I’ve focused primarily on the first two, but I’m hoping that the third will help pay off this car loan a little faster than we have been doing.  So the Author Hat has been worn a lot in the last year too.

Which one is most important?  It depends on the time of day you ask me.  Five minutes before my husband gets home, the Housewife Hat is the most important as I try to make it look like I haven’t been at home all day, drinking coffee and watching soapies.  **wink**

Happy Release Day – Safe In His Arms

Picture Picture Picture Picture Picture Picture Picture Phew – after much anticipation, Safe In His Arms is out.  It’s live.  It’s gone.  That wasn’t so painful, was it?

Ok.  I admit it.  I get beyond nervous when my book is about to release.  But I’m happy to say that it’s out now, and the reviews are coming in.

My highlights from some of the reviews flying around?

“Renae Kaye’s book starts off with a bang right from page one and never lets up.”

“Again, I was delighted with Kaye’s writing. Though her books are both funny and touching, Safe in his Arms is also deeply emotional.”

“I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it giving it 6 of 5 hearts.”

“Kaye pushes boundaries with this book; it's darker and grittier than her previous work and deals with issues of past physical and sexual abuse.”

“From the beginning, Lon and Casey have undeniable chemistry.”

“The ending is a beautiful HEA. These men find such JOY in being together.”

“Just when you think you know an author's style , they go sharp sideways. The constants with this author's books are that they remain fabulous, sweet, direct, honest, magical and earthy. Just great stuff!”

“I just finished it! Was sooo good loved it. Congrats to you. Def gonna be a re read just like all your other books! Thanks for again giving me an awesome read.”
