5 Benefits of Travel and Self Discovery

Dr. Murad advises us to look for beauty all around, to give ourselves permission to explore and discover our personal passion and to be surprised by the serendipities that emerge when we cast aside expectations and give ourselves freedom to fail. Travel is an unmatched opportunity to allow all of this wisdom to play out. There are so many moments that go “off script” on every trip—why not celebrate them instead of seeing them as a source of frustration and stress? There is so much to gain by letting go and living in the now when you’re in a new setting. Here are 5 benefits of travel.

Travel gets you out of your comfort zone. Step away from the familiar and dive into the unknown to really discover how others live and what the world has to offer. Shop at local markets, eat local specialties and do your best to meet and chat with local people. Don’t worry if you don’t speak much of the local language. Most people appreciate the efforts of a traveler who tries to communicate in the mother tongue instead of assuming that everyone can, or should, speak English. Be imperfect and you’ll live longer and it will be a more rewarding journey.
Travel encourages gratitude. Seeing how other people live may help you to appreciate how fortunate your circumstances are. As a simple example, we take for granted that clean and abundant water will flow when we turn on our taps, but for many who live in developing countries, that is just a luxury to dream about. Travel can make you appreciate the myriad choices you have available to you every day, from seemingly endless fresh fruits and vegetables to dozens of breakfast cereals.
Travel exposes you to other world-views. Seeing what events make the front page of the newspaper when you’re travelling can remind you that some concerns are universal and also help you to see that your home country, or home town, is not always the absolute center of the universe.
Travel helps you realize the importance of “play.” One of the best parts of travel is unplugging and rediscovering what it’s like to be a kid again with no deadlines, rigid schedules or expectations. It can provide the ideal conditions for finding your passion.
Travel helps you be more present. Regardless of whether you are on an African safari, touring medieval castles or shopping at an open market in Bangkok, your natural desire to soak up all that’s new take up all your bandwidth—which makes it almost impossible to be dwelling on the past or be anxious about the future.

Dr. Murad’s 2015 Inclusive Health® Weekend Retreat

Last Year’s Participants Share Their Experiences

“When you become the most important person to yourself, your accomplishments will amaze you.” –Dr. Howard Murad

Dr. Murad held his first-ever Inclusive Health® Retreat last year, and the women who attended said it was life-changing. Not only because they got to interact with Dr. Murad personally, but because they got a rare and wonderful opportunity to nurture themselves exclusively. No distractions, no interruptions.

Dr. Murad is thrilled to be hosting his second rejuvenating and transformative weekend retreat this year at the beautiful Running Y Ranch in Klamath Falls, Oregon, on September 11-13, 2015.

We asked some Murad employees who attended last year’s retreat to share their experiences with us.

Candice Sylvia, Executive Director of Global Education, said the retreat was unlike anything she’d ever experienced:

“Dr. Murad was able to illustrate a full 360-degree view of wellness that had a lasting impression on me and the guests of the retreat. One of the guests said to me, ‘This was exactly what I needed. I don’t want to leave! I’ve had such a wonderful time with all of you, and I feel back in touch with my youth.’ Overall, the retreat taught me, and many of the attendees, how to nurture ourselves and thrive.”

Lori Cahitas, University for Inclusive Health Manager, said the retreat was a chance to unwind and reconnect:

“Many of the attendees came with friends. They were so happy to be able to break away from their regular routine and take time to just focus on themselves. Many were wives and moms, so to have a few days to only focus on themselves was priceless.”

Ruth Madeja, Director of Global Retail Marketing, said the Inclusive Health® Retreat inspired her to take better care of herself:

“The activities and talks by Dr. Murad gave me the inspiration to live a healthier life, while also giving me the tools to make healthier choices and put into action a healthier lifestyle when I got home.”

Sabrina Dunbar, Project Manager, Global Marketing, said the retreat was an unforgettable weekend:

“My favorite part of the retreat was seeing everyone bond over the course of a weekend and embrace Inclusive Health®. Attendees were impressed with different activities and enjoyed their time with Dr. Murad.”

Activities included an art workshop with Dr. Murad, a cooking class, hiking, a spa treatment, yoga and more. One of the highlights, according Candice Sylvia, was the healthy food choices. “There was an abundance of delicious, healthy food. We had a phenomenal cooking class! Many of the tricks I learned I still use today. The catered meals were superb and filled with great conversations with other like-minded individuals,” she said.

For this year’s retreat, Dr. Murad has developed an exceptional program with the staff at the exclusive Running Y Ranch to help you tap into your personal potential for happiness, wellness and youth-building. We hope to see you there!

Wishing You a Happy Independence Day

Fourth of July celebrations are wonderful affirmations of our political and cultural traditions as Americans.  And one of those cherished traditions is gathering to sharing a holiday barbeque or picnic with family, friends and neighbors. As you load up your plate, remember to follow Dr. Murad’s 80/20 rule.  When you sit down to eat, try to choose 80% of healthy plant-based foods, but feel free to splurge on your favorite comfort foods, like cupcakes or a hotdog, to round out the other 20%.

If you are looking for ways to burn off the extra calories that may be lurking in that 20%, read our suggestions for staying active over July 4th weekend.

Happy Independence Day America!

5 Ways to Explore the World Without Leaving Town

Summertime equals travel time—discovering new cultures, exotic cuisines, and one-of-a-kind adventures. Travel can be an escape; a chance to get away from the stress of our daily lives. But not all of us can jump on a plane and disappear from our lives for two weeks.

So today on the blog, we’re looking at connecting with different cultures in your own backyard. Here are five ways to “travel” without leaving your hometown. With these tips, you can take the term “staycation” to a new level, constantly living in a world of discovery and wonder.

Cultural Activities. Many cities offer a whole range of cultural activities. Check out a Chinese New Year celebration, a Rio de Janeiro Carnival, Oktoberfest or Día de los Muertos. The possibilities are endless.
Food. One of the best ways to explore the world is through food. Experiment with an exotic new recipe using ingredients you’ve never used before, or take a foreign cooking class. Vow to try a new restaurant each week, making discoveries about different types of cuisines and venues available to you right in your city. You will be surprised at the flavors the world has to offer.
Theme Night” Summer Party. Summer is the perfect time to get creative with your get-togethers. Choose a spot on the globe that you’ve always wanted to visit, say Greece, for example, and throw a Greek-themed dinner party, complete with Greek cuisine, music and attire. Or, host a Japanese night, complete with sake, anime movies, sushi and geisha costumes. If you have friends of various ethnicities, take turns hosting and ask each person to tell a story about his or her culture’s traditions.
Explore Different Music or Movies. Watch a Bollywood movie, or embrace the soothing sounds of Tibetan monks chanting. This is a great way to lose yourself in a culture that is completely unknown to you.
Learn a New Language or Dance. Have you always wanted to try the Argentinian Tango? Flamenco? Did you take Spanish in high school, but forgot it all? Take a class, hang out with a Spanish-speaking friend or check out language-learning courses online.

Experiencing new cultures and learning about different histories and traditions – everything that goes into taking a trip – broadens your horizons and can change your outlook on how you choose to live your life. Everyone can benefit from stretching themselves to grow and understand the world around them. Any “travel” that takes you away from your little corner of the world can have a refreshing, eye-opening effect. Bon voyage!

4th of July BBQ Recipe Ideas

No Fourth of July celebration is complete without friends, family and foods from the grill. It’s a great opportunity to step away from all the stressful artificial connections that lead to Cultural Stress™ and to feed the real personal connections that help us to maximize our happiness.

While the classic cookout menu of burgers, hot dogs and potato salad is always a hit, if you’re looking to change things up this year we’ve got some wonderful suggestions for delicious, healthy treats that could become new family favorites.

Grilled Bread with Zucchini, Ricotta and Basil

Ingredients

4 1/2-inch-thick slices country bread
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 small zucchini, thinly sliced lengthwise
1 cup fresh basil, leaves torn
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
kosher salt
1 cup fresh ricotta

Directions

Heat grill to medium-high. Brush the bread with 1 tablespoon of the oil and grill until golden and crisp, about 1 minute per side. Transfer to plates.
Grill the zucchini until tender and slightly charred, 3 to 4 minutes per side.
Toss the zucchini in a large bowl with the basil, red pepper, ½ teaspoon salt, and remaining tablespoon of oil.
Top the bread with the zucchini and ricotta. Serves 4.
