How I Know It’s Not a Writing Day

Any writer knows. Some days you feel it, some days you don’t. Today wasa no-feels day. Here’s how I knew:

I spent the first two hours of daylight with my laptop open in front of me while I stared out the window. See,a bird couple was investigating the birdhouse. They’ve come to check the place three days in a row now, but have yet to take up residence. I started making up stories about them. I decided they’re picky house hunters trying to incite a seller’s war. “You...

Guest Posts! And Interviews! From Me!

I’m elsewhere online! Saying stuff!

Today I’m over at Chuck Wendig’sTerrible Minds, where I writeabout asshole women and why we need more of them.

Before that,I was interviewed by Layla Lawlor about character, Creative Commons, and the all-important Rio-and-the-puppy inspiration.

And before that, I stopped by Mary Robinette Kowal’s blog to talk about how I don’t actually kill people.

5 Things That Would Make Me Throw a Book Against the Wall

* Note: All these things are inspired by books I recently read, but I’m not going to specifically name any of the books because karma is a scary, scary beast. Yes, yes, I’m a cow…ard. Hur hur. Geddit, geddit? Uh, moving on…

1. Unhealthy relationships which are hailed as awesome ones.

Look, I get it. I get that no relationship is perfect. Mr. Cow and I fight quite a bit (mostly his fault, of course), but at the end of the day, we love and support each other and we make sacrifices which we don’t...

An Outsider’s Speculation on the Selma Snubs

Adobe Photoshop PDFThe_Butler_poster

I’m not black,so I viewed the films I’m about to talk about from the position of the privileged group. I’m going totalk about how I responded to them from that standpoint.

I’m seeing a lot of chatter aboutSelma being way too overlooked for awards this year. I have a speculation about that.

I’m going to talk about last year.

Last year,12 Years a Slave (deservedly) did very well in the awards season. Another film that addressed race,The Butler, did not.

I saw jokes at the time that the public consc...

I am indeed eligible for the Campbell Award for Best New Writer.

The Ca...

The Killing – the first two seasons

The_Killing_Season_2_Promotional_Poster

Police procedurals don’t usually lure me, but the TV series The Killing reeled me in. In one weekend, I binged the first two seasons on Netflix. The show is tense, suspenseful, and gripping. And really bleak, both visually and emotionally.

In the first two seasons, two homicide detectives – Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) – investigate the murder of a teen girl in Seattle, a city that doesn’t seem to get a single ray of sunshine through all 26 episodes.Almost al...

That Certain Feel of a Battle Lost

My daughter doesn’t tweet all that much, so when she sends out a link, I sit up and take notice. Lastweekendshe tweeted a link to the powerful speech Shonda Rhimes’ gave upon her acceptance ofThe Hollywood Reporter’s Sherry Lansing Leadership Award, which recognizes a woman in the entertainment industry who is a pioneer and leader in the industry.

For those unfamiliar with Ms. Rhimes, she’s a serious force in Hollywood whose writing and executive producer credits include Grey’s Anatomy and Sca...
