Joseph John Lee is an American fantasy author who writes books that are either dark and depressing or silly and light-hearted, with not much wiggle room in between. A true product of New England, he prefers Dunkin’ over Starbucks, sometimes speaks with a Boston accent, and does not say the word “wicked” in casual conversation as much as one may think. He currently lives in Boston with his wife, Annie, along with their dog, Luna, and their robot vacuum named Crumb.

"Wow.

Wow wow wow. This book… Okay, I don’t even know where to start. But we’ll start with this: I’m a big fan of Steven Eriksen’s Malazan series. Where some people find it “too long” or “too complicated”, I find it immensely rewarding and refreshing." Read more of this review »

I've been thoroughly crushed by this lil novella and I wouldn't want it any other way.

This series has quickly become a go-to rec for modern epic fantasy. Don't sleep on it.

Man I can tell this series is gonna end up being something great. There's a ton of great worldbuilding and character work crammed into this tiny novella, and I can't wait to see how it all comes together once the first novel releases.

An absolute delight to read.

Already loved the Whisper That Replaced God books and this brings all the plot threads from those novellas to a satisfying conclusion.

Mortals acting as the avatars or vessels of the gods is such a cool trope and it's done

“A people and culture do not cease to exist simply because your eyes have shut.”
Joseph John Lee, The Bleeding Stone

“Civilizations rise and fall just as the tides changes across the flow of time. What is reduced to ash and cinder is reborn as something greater. The choice is only ours to determine whether we wish to be the ash or the flame.”
Joseph John Lee, The Children of the Black Moon

“We as humans always run the risk of ruining everything for everyone by being stupid.”
Joseph John Lee, Upscaled

“Fear cuts deeper than swords. The man who fears losing has already lost.”
George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones / A Clash of Kings / A Storm of Swords / A Feast for Crows

“Memory is a double-edged sword, Uthas. It can keep you strong through dark times, but it can also cripple you, keep you locked in a moment that no longer exists.”
John Gwynne, Valor

“People”—Geralt turned his head—“like to invent monsters and monstrosities. Then they seem less monstrous themselves.”
Andrzej Sapkowski, The Last Wish

“We're all puppets, Laurie. I'm just a puppet who can see the strings.”
Alan Moore, Watchmen

“I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me.”
Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
