This was ridiculous a long time ago, Sudan. Now it’s just embarrassing.

After joyfully reporting yesterday that Meriam Ibrahim had finally been released by someone within the Sudanese government with some common sense, it’s now being reported that she and her family were detained once again in the airport in Khartoum as they tried to leave the country, and that she has been re-arrested.

Sigh.

The report discusses that different forces within Sudan’s government are reacting in diametrically different ways, exhibiting spectacular displays of disunity and disorganization, with a poor innocent mother, father, and their children caught in the middle.

Government of Sudan, if your goal was to demonstrate your expertise and modernity, you have failed.  Dramatically and fantastically.  The world is slapping our collective foreheads at what you have put this family through.

And so, here we go again.  #PrayforMeriam

Meriam Ibrahim Freed!

I’m in the middle of traveling back to the U.S. from China, but I wanted to take the time to celebrate the release of Meriam Ibrahim!  I’m grateful to God for this wonderful news.

Solving the Washington Redskins Dilemma

Washington Redskins LogoThe Washington Redskins have been in the news quite a bit recently with people calling for them to change their mascot from the old familiar “Redskins”, which they’ve used since they moved to Washington in 1937.  It’s an issue that is heated, controversial, and debated fiercely on all sides.

I think I may have come up with a solution that will please everyone.  Or no one.  I really don’t know.   I just want to throw it out there as a possible fix.

Drawing Thimblerig

Artist Burton Booz came to my fifth grade classroom and gave a demonstration on how to draw some of the main characters of Thimblerig’s Ark.  It was a fun time for the students as they saw the artist who created the beautiful cover recreate his drawings live!

A New Character for Thimblerig’s Ark II?

Illustrator Burton Booz, who did the fantastic cover of Thimblerig’s Ark, visited my fifth grade class today to teach them how to draw different characters from the book.  Inspired by the creative imaginations of the students, Burton imaged a new creature – a groundhog/unicorn hybrid.  We can’t decide if it should be called a groundicorn, or a unihog.

The Sacred Arts Revolution

When my post, What’s Wrong with Christian Filmmaking, went viral back in March, I had no idea what to do with it.  I hadn’t planned on writing a post that would go on to reach over 100,000 readers, and I didn’t have a second stage set up, ready to go, to take advantage of the excitement.

I did become encouraged to try and do something to help continue the conversation, however.  I started a Facebook group called The Sacred Arts Revolution, and then promptly got busy with life and didn’t even announce that I’d started it.  So it still sits there, idle.

Since I’m still getting regular visitors to the article, and since people are still asking the question, “Okay, so lots of us feel this way, now what?”  I thought I’d announce it and see if there is any interest in being a part of a conversational group where we can discuss what people are doing to revolutionize what I’m calling “the sacred arts”.

If you’d like to be a part of that conversation, then run over to the Sacred Arts Revolution Facebook page and join!  Feel free to include articles, and make comments, and begin discussions, and network, and encourage, and enjoy!  I’m not sure if it will go anywhere, but it’s worth a shot!

Meanwhile, I’m looking for a logo for the Sacred Arts Revolution, so if anyone would like to give it a shot just for the exposure, I’d love to see some ideas!  Post them on the FB page.

Also, share the word!  Post links up on Facebook and Twitter and Google+, and wherever you spend time online.  Let’s help the conversation grow!

Blessings!

Nate
