HAPPY BDAY DEVIKA!!!!

It’s my birthday on June 29th and my awesome friend has graciously agreed to let me write a guest post about how Sri Lankans traditionally celebrate their birthday. (Being half German and having grown up in Germany, I do only part of what I’m describing here.)
More than 70 % of the Sri Lankans are Buddhist (as am I), and this applies to their way of celebrating, though I am sure the Christians and Hindus share many similarities.
On your birthday, you get up early in the morning with the first light of dawn and prepare ‘milk rice’. For Sri Lankans, making milk rice means using a special sort of rice which is first boiled with lots of water. Then you add freshly made coconut milk in generous quantities and let the whole thing simmer until there’s no more liquid left. It is customary to add cardamom seeds. Some will also add raisins or jaggery for taste. You heap the whole mass onto a large platter and let it cool down and harden a little, before you cut it up into neat squares or diamond shapes.
This milk rice is offered to the temple early in the morning after you’ve had a bath and dressed in only white clothes. Part of the alms’ giving will be used for religious ceremonies and offerings to Lord Buddha, the rest of it will be the monks’ breakfast. So alongside the milk rice, you either offer fruits like bananas (if you sweetened it) or you make a spicy sambol of chopped onions, chili powder and a sprinkle of lime. In case you don’t offer alms in the morning, you’ll go to the temple in the evening. There you light oil lamps, worship the Bo tree, burn incense sticks, ask for blessings, and maybe donate some money.
If you celebrate with the family – which is sort of inevitable – you’ll make a special lunch or dinner. Fried rice is the chosen meal. For this you’ll boil long-grained rice like Basmati and mix it with Margarine and tempered vegetables like finely chopped carrots, leeks, beans and cabbage. You can add scrambled eggs or small chicken pieces. Some will make a special Biryani dish instead.
In case you live in a traditional household, you’ll prepare sweetmeats of all kinds, made from rice flour and palm honey (treacle) or from ground mung beans, flour and sugar, dipped in batter and deep-fried. As an alternative or in addition to that, you’ll buy a nice icing cake. In my case, it’s almost always just the birthday cake (I LOVE chocolate) that’ll be lit with a candle, cut and fed to the family members and or guests in the afternoon.
As for gifts: Almost everyone in Sri Lanka will buy you clothes for your birthday or any other occasion, whether you’re a woman or a man. Hardly anyone asks whether you want something specific or gets you any other gift unless they know you very well. When you receive your gift, you shouldn’t open it right away, that’s considered impolite. Within the family, though, you’ll sometimes receive the gift early on the birthday so you can wear something new on the special occasion.

Conquest of the Heart
I welcome fellow author MICHELLE STEGMAN to my blog today to talk about her latest release Conquest of the Heart.
I call Conquest of the Heart, "A light-hearted romp through the Dark Ages." The story is set during the Norman Conquest of England, a dark and violent time. But I just can't seem to write "dark." I love dark brooding heroes and serious romances with tragedy and heartbreak in them. But I can't seem to write it. Maybe because I prefer to look on the bright side of things. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the first thing I asked the doctor is if she knew any good breast cancer jokes. I needed to see the humorous side of even that.
Conquest of the Heart is serious, of course, but there's a lot of humor in it. I turned a lot of clichés around and I think that helped a bit with the humor. For example, the hero, Ranulf, is a virgin and is totally clueless when it comes to women. The heroine, Madeline, has to put out lures and set her traps to finally get him into her bed--many of which backfire.
Ranulf finds himself defeated time after time when he is training with one of his knights because he is distracted by Madeline. Although he's never been bested before, Madeline thinks he can't fight and worries about him every time he rides out the gate.
I tried to stay true to the times, of course, but I wanted Conquest of the Heart to be a fun read. I hope I've succeeded. I hope you think so, too.

He let his gaze travel back to his bride walking stiffly, reluctantly, toward him. For once, Ranulf felt speech was beyond him. She was so much more than he had expected. So beautiful. So clean. She glittered like a bright jewel in a dung heap. For Etherby, no matter how much he loved it, was not much better than one right now.
If only he could say to this magnificent woman, "Go away. Come back in a year. Give me time to build the castle the king has ordered, tear down this rotting hall, teach cleanliness to servants to whom filth is a way of life. Then you won't have to grit your teeth and square our shoulders as if going into battle as you come to wed me." But it was already too late. She was here. The wedding was now. And he felt as randy as a billy goat.
He would begin building the king's castle immediately. The work would distract him from Lady Madeline's seductive lure. She would find no treason with which to fill the king's ears, and, like his mother's attitude toward his father, he was sure the lady would be glad not to have him in her bower, not the way he felt now, the things he wanted to do to her.

In Which I Finally Post Once Again Hello World! No really. This isn’t the rote WordPress hello, it’s me, author KD Rose saying “Hi.” I’ve been absent awhile due to illness and now I’m back. I’m here, maybe not running with the bulls but at least hobbling with the um, well, chronically pretty darn god-awful ill. But enough about that. I’m all about keeping it positive (except when I’m not). But see- things are looking up! Literally. This is a view from my yard so life can’t be all bad.
Add to that a wonderful husband, family, and even a wonderful publisher and I have a reason to dig out the old keyboard again. Ok, it was actually replace the new wireless keyboard which didn’t work worth squat with the old wired up keyboard that still works just fine, but that’s technical life for a plebian.I’m posting on this date to mention that despite everything I have a new book coming out on May 21st, 2015- and it's already available for pre-order on Amazon. Titled The Brevity of Twit, this humorous book is everything I used to be. Using the Twitter forum as a scroll, The Brevity of Twit yields humor, insight, and poetic vigor in a light read that will both lift your spirits and make you ponder. So take a gander. My publisher decided to publish it despite the absence of the entire being of the author (me). What more can an author ask for? The book will be on Amazon and other neat sites. I’ll post the links once the book is live.In the meantime I’m going to un-pause and reinvigorate. It’s been awhile since I’ve sipped the creative nectar and I’m sure it will be as sweet, tangy, and ironic as I remember.
