Guilty by Association

My latest blog post at Now and Then Reader, about the dilemma of a slaveowner's wife who considers herself an abolitionist.

The story makes for fascinating reading.

The Gold Rush

I've just posted a review of my favorite Charlie Chaplin movie on Deathless Prose. And you'll see that I found a link where you can watch the whole thing for free.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

I just reviewed this on my blog and I'm quite pleased with the post. Don't be shy -- disagree if you think I'm missing something important.

One for the team

I just posted a response to J.H. Hexter's essay on Now & Then Reader, "The Historian and His Day." To tell you the truth, it irritated me. The guy was writing in the 1950s and clearly had a little woman at home, to take care of the details, leaving him free to pursue his very important scholarly inquiries from early morning until bedtime, seven days a week.

Come on, who lives this way anymore? Why should we care about this dead white male's opinions?

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Saw this on a blog I follow and thought it was so wonderful I just had to share it. The updated lyrics to "Buddy Can you Spare a Dime" were great, too.

Jean-Paul Sartre

My translation of Sartre's haunting essay, "Paris Under the Occupation," is featured on a
new website dedicated to publishing serious nonfiction for e-book readers.
