“What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”  So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions before he died:  ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.

 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said.

But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?  You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.  So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

For some reason, the strange story of Joseph, youngest and most beloved son of Jacob–Israel–keeps recurring to me.

I’ve loved this story of the seventeen-year-old boy who doesn’t know the rules from the first time I ‘met’ Joseph.

Or maybe he does and just ignores them?

It’s likely that Joseph’s brothers made their hatred of him apparent. Jacob preferred Joseph to all the others because “he was the son of his old age.” And yet, Joseph told his brothers about the dreams predicting Joseph’s lordship over them all. And when Jacob had created a special coat for the boy, Joseph hastened to find his brothers to show them.

The boy evokes this as he appears in his ‘coat with long sleeves.’ “Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; we shall say that a wild beast has devoured him and we shall see what becomes of his dreams. But when Reuben he heard it, he delivered him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life….Shed no blood…”

It’s got everything, this tale: love, jealousy, hatred, maybe pride on the part of Joseph. But primarily Joseph’s story foreshadows Christ: hope and salvation.

They sold Joseph for twenty shekels

Genesis reveals only snippets of Joseph’s life between his seventeenth and thirtieth year. But we’re told the Lord has his hand on him. Working for Potiphar, one of Pharoah’s officials, he prospers, until he lands in the dungeon.

We’ve no way of knowing how Joseph feels during the rollercoaster ups and downs of his life in Egypt. But we can guess.

We’re provided details about his boss’s wife sexual aggression. Over and over, she tries to get him to lie with her. Even to the point of Joseph telling her that Potiphar has put everything he has in his hands, except his wife. “How can I do such a wicked thing?” But Joseph’s refusal merely whets her desire; she surprises him and “removes his garment.”
But saying no had to have been difficult. Perhaps she was alluring, certainly provocative and because Joseph knew well the cost of rejecting her advance

But he refused to disobey God’s law and ran, ending up in the dungeon because, of course, she lied, making herself the victim.

How long was Joseph in the dungeon?

Most likely, long enough to learn the single most important lesson of life:

“Without Me you can do nothing….(John 15:5)

He didn’t say, you can’t do much without Me but you can do nothing.”

Searching for and Maintaining Peace

Although the Bible doesn’t provide the details, saying no to the powerful woman had to have been exquisitely difficult for Joseph–on more than a few levels.

A few years ago, I wrote The Battleground of the Conscience. Rereading it for this reflection offers advice I have trouble holding on to. And that’s 16th century’s Lorenzo (Dom) Scupoli’s counsel about contrition. About the daily at times, minute by minute, slips and slides from Him. The self-criticism can weigh me down.

Negative thoughts are never from Him

Guessing that you too may occasionally do a deep dive into self-disgust, here’s Scupoli’s admonition on that point:

To preserve our hearts in perfect tranquility, it is still necessary to ignore some interior feelings of remorse which seem to come from God, because they are reproaches that our conscience makes to us regarding true faults, but which come, in effect, from the evil spirit as can be judged by what ensues. If the twinges of conscience serve to make us more humble, if they render us more fervent in the practice of good works, if they do not diminish the trust that one must have in divine mercy, we must accept them with thanksgiving, as favors from heaven. But if they trouble us, if they dishearten us, if they render us lazy, timid, slow to perform our duties, we must believe that these are the suggestions of the enemy and do things in a normal way, not deigning to listen to them.

(The Spiritual Combat, chapter 25)

When we next see Joseph, his enforced silence and solitude has transformed a prideful youngster into a prudent, humble, righteous man. When asked if he can interpret the strange dreams of the Pharaoh, Joseph replies that he cannot.

But God can.

“And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and put him in charge of the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. 35 They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food. 36 This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.”

Joseph’s tale immerses me in the terrible suffering of our Israeli brothers and sisters.

Of course we pray for the souls of the dead.

And offer our fasts and sacrifices.

But more than those, we trust that God’s mysterious, unknowable Divine Will prevails. You meant it for harm but God intended for good to accomplish…

Tiny Acts of Heroism

It didn’t take me very long to understand as a brand new Christian the tiny acts of heroism we Christians are required to commit each day-each minute. If we’re serious, that is. They are, in their own way, much tougher than one glorious and final act of martyrdom and complete abandonment. In fact, Saint Teresa of Avila wryly commented that the martyrs “bought heaven cheaply.” Unfortunately though, I’ve forgotten that lesson. Instead, have reverted to scheduling prayer time but frequently missing or truncating it so much that it’s barely there.

But I remembered a secret: The Practice of the Presence of God written by Brother Lawrence five centuries ago. The book begins with a series of conversations and ends with fourteen letters penned by Brother Lawrence.

On this 6th or seventh read, I ask for the grace to follow Brother Lawrence’s simple, profound wisdom, each moment of my remaining days.

“Brother Lawrence said we ought, once and for all, heartily put our whole trust in God, and make a total surrender of ourselves to Him, secure that He would not deceive us. We ought not weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed. We
should not wonder if, in the beginning, we often failed in our endeavors, but that at last we should gain a habit which will naturally produce its acts in us without our care and to our exceeding great delight.

The whole substance of religion was faith, hope, and charity. In the practice of these we become united to the will of God. Everything else is indifferent and to be used
as a means that we may arrive at our end and then be swallowed up by faith and charity.”

What that requires is paying attention.

Remember Cain and Abel?

The star of this story is Cain and his inability to acknowledge the excellence of his brother’s offering when compared to the lackluster-mediocrity-of his own. I seriously doubt that Cain got up that day intending to murder his brother. No, he got up “and brought some of the fruits of the soil…”

Cain did precisely what I all too frequently do.

Grabbed a handful of whatever was closest and easiest to gather. Because so often, I am not paying attention. Or I am trying to fit too many tasks into too little time. Hurrying…get this thing done in order to move on to the next thing. Perhaps that’s what Cain was doing too.

But Abel selected one of the best of his flock. To do this, Abel must have taken extensive time…searching through what was likely his large flock to compare and contrast the animals. His intention clear, focused and patiently looking for excellence. And when confronted with the truth, Cain sulked, got angry because he felt shame. So much shame that he was incapable of hearing the warning of his Best Friend.

“Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

The lay Brother Lawrence writes of a practice of the presence of God.

Ours acts don’t matter all that much–

what matters is the intention, love–and our complete attention, infused by the theological virtues..

It’s been a long time since I’ve saved lives. But I vividly recall the thrill of watching ventricular fibrillation or tachycardia convert to sinus rhythm. By the age of twenty-six, the numbers of ‘saves’ were countless. It’s what I did.

But looking back on those early years, I understand that far more precious to God are:

My prayers for the souls in purgatory. The prayers outside the sidewalk of the wanna be abortion clinic in San Antonio. Listening to someone who isn’t making sense but making the effort to understand her.Refusal to complain.The small daily, often silent, sacrifices to this God I did not know back then.

But then again, maybe all of it: all the willful ignorance of God and His Law brought me here. Wanting to practice the presence of God by tiny acts of heroism.

God knows best what we need. All that He does is for our good. If we knew how much He loves us, we would always be ready to receive both the bitter and the sweet from His Hand. It would make no difference. All that came from Him would be pleasing. The worst afflictions only appear intolerable if we see them in the wrong light. When we see them as coming from the hand of God and know that it is our loving Father who humbles and distresses us, our sufferings lose their bitterness and can even become a source of consolation. Let all our efforts be to know God. The more one knows Him, the greater one desires to know Him. Knowledge is commonly the measure of love. The deeper and more extensive our knowledge, the greater is our love. If our love of God were great we would love Him equally in pain and pleasure.

The Practice of the Presence of God

We can’t do this alone.

Maybe like me, you need reminding: We can do none of this alone. Our intellect, will and souls must be illuminated by the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity. Brother Lawrence knew this and taught it. The Catholic catechism declares the theological virtues are “infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as his children and meriting eternal life. They’re the pledge of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit in the faculties of the human being….the gift of faith remains in one who has not sinned against it.

The universal search for meaning: belonging

We’re created to belong—to someone, something. Whether it’s a person or a cause, belonging drives the universal search for meaning.

Those Hamas terrorists?

The Israeli fighters?

The Ukrainian people and Russians?

The Mexican cartels?

The gangs in LA, New York, Chicago?

In a sense, they’re all soldiers. Each is immersed in the search for somewhere he can belong…someone he can follow.

Although my examples may read as extreme, we cannot deny that each of these groups has a leader, a person gifted with qualities that draw people to him. Often the leaders and the followers in these examples are men. Men who share a desperate need for fatherhood. And who along the way, attract women—women in desperate need to give themselves away.

Remember the year of St. Joseph?

Reading Pope Francis’ splendid Apostolic Letter, Patris Corde, prompted me to write, ” Ours is a world in desperate need of fatherhood. A quick online search reveals the startling rise of single motherhood here in the US and in the world. Soberly revealing our need for heavenly intervention for our fatherless families and overburdened mothers. Starkly exposing our culture’s bereft notion of fatherhood as mere sexual congress.

Such simple words, “father” and “fatherhood,” have meanings which once were plain, unadulterated. But that was before the intensification of the “struggle between the family and the State for the minds of the young.”

On this subject, GK Chesterton wrote, “It is difficult to defend the obvious. We don’t even know where to begin. It is also easy to forget the obvious. Breathing only becomes an issue when we are out of breath. The family is a perfect example of something so obvious that it is difficult to defend—so obvious that it is easy to ignore. But decay begins to set in, says Chesterton, when we forget the obvious things.

When people start arguing about the triangle of the family, they dance around the definition of the thing. Yet they want to talk about nothing but exceptions, which means they are assuming the definition they do not want to discuss. In other words, the arguments about the family seem largely to ignore the family, to ignore the normal and focus on the abnormal, with earnest people making impassioned pleas about broken families; about unwanted children; about parents who are not married to each other; about nonparents who are married to each other; about the divorced and remarried; about those suffering from a same-sex attraction who simply want to be “happy” (which they claim will come from playing house); about single parents and abusive parents and absent parents.”

This war against family has long roots

Pope Leo’s Xlll’s Rerum Novarum–the fundamental document of Catholic social teaching, contains startling, prescient observations about capitalism and its poisonous effect upon the family. The pope predicted the post WW ll exodus of women from the home and into the workplace. The lure of career and its economic benefits initiating the rise of a whole industry of caregivers for the children of strangers, persuading women that mere motherhood was insufficient.

Catholic teaching on social justice was the catalyst for Chesterton to leave the Anglican Church for Roman Catholicism. “I am convinced. . . that the fight for the family and the free citizen and everything decent must now be waged by the one fighting form of Christianity.” He wanted to join the Church that would fight for the family. For the rest of his life, he fought for the faith and for the family.”

Two recent books caught my eye. Both are about being male and the need for men to understand and don their masculinity. Franciscan priest Richard Rohr has written, Adam’s Return: The Five Promises of Male Initiation. In the introduction, Father Rohr writes that men have not described their own souls. Men must first and finally interpret men, he declares. It shouldn’t be difficult, should it?—unless we live in culture that insists that males are the problem. Hence causing young boys and men to doubt their natures and mitigate their masculinity.

The second book is called Manhood: The Masculine Virtues America Needs by Missouri Senator Josh Hawley. The senator writes of Adam, Eve and the garden with some intriguing observations. Adam was placed there as guard. But because he failed his primary role, the serpent entered and beguiled Eve. Hawley also suggests that the tree of good and evil would be given to Adam and Eve but not until they were ready. Interesting, yes?

Using familiar biblical people, Abraham, Joshua and David, Hawley reveals man’s mission as husband, father, warrior, builder, priest and king. Isn’t it peculiar that we need books to explain, more accurately, proclaim the God-given natures of man and woman?

It’s so easy to forget the obvious.

Belonging

only occurred when I ‘discovered God.’ Knowing full well, that God never left me. And that It was I who walked away to begin a search that could end only in Him. That’s true for each almost 8 billion souls: We belong to Christ, we were purchased at a colossal cost.

The universal search for meaning: Belonging. St. Teresa Benedicta–Edith Stein–explains the primary reason for the wholescale disappointment, even hatred by women for men :

… The deepest longing of woman’s heart is to give herself lovingly, to belong to another, and to possess this other being completely. But this surrender becomes a perverted self-abandon and a form of slavery when it is given to another person and not to God; it is an unjustified demand which no human being can fulfill. Only God can welcome a person’s total surrender in such a way that one does not lose one’s soul in the process but wins it. And only God can bestow Himself upon a person so that He fulfills this being completely and loses nothing of Himself in so doing…. Whether she is a mother in the home, or occupies a place in the limelight of public life, or lives behind quiet cloister walls, she must be a handmaid of the Lord everywhere”

Vengeance: Is It Ever Justifiable?

When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled,
he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,
and he sent messengers ahead of him.
On the way they entered a Samaritan village
to prepare for his reception there,
but they would not welcome him
because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.
When the disciples James and John saw this they asked,
“Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven
to consume them?”
Jesus turned and rebuked them,
and they journeyed to another village.

In the Christian liturgy, this Gospel passage was read on Wednesday, October 3rd. We can picture it–kind of: the Son of God is unwelcome in a village and the “sons of thunder,” James and John offer to “call down fire from heaven to consume them.” Clearly the apostles have the power to do what they suggest, they’re nearing the end of three years of apprenticeship with the Creator of the Universe.

In this passage, we readily infer racism, ethnic rivalry, humiliation; all leading to rightful indignation, outrage and vengeance on the part of the apostles. But that’s some payback, isn’t it? ‘Lord do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”

He turned and rebuked them and they headed to another village.

When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem. He was heading to his death. As they neared Jerusalem: the lies, deceit and cowardice of what he would soon face must have loomed at times, impossibly huge. And yet, Jesus merely rebukes his friends who still don’t understand his mission and moves on, in search of lost souls: of you and me.

Over two thousand years later, we still don’t understand the Christian message, do we? We side with James and John who walked and slept with him for three years. Like us who eat his body and drink his blood sometimes daily and yet….it takes woefully little to ignite that simmering distrust of the Father, especially when injustice reigns. As it seems to be doing everywhere I look.

We know the answer to vengeance: is it ever justifiable?

No.

Never.

And yet we insist on adding buts, like just wars or “we have a right to speak out for the truth….”

Until we consider Jesus. his behavior, words, actions during the 24 Hours of the Passion of Christ.

And then we’re reduced to silence. To pondering our nothingness.

On Humility (51-54)

The seventh degree of humility is that he consider himself lower and of less account than anyone else, and this not only in verbal protestation but also with the most heartfelt inner conviction, humbling himself and saying with the Prophet, “But I am a worm and no man, the scorn of men and the outcast of the people” (Ps. 21:7). “After being exalted, I have been humbled and covered with confusion” (Pa. 87:16). And again, “It is good for me that You have humbled me, that I may learn Your commandments” (Ps. 118:71).

I am a worm and no man.

Really?

Really—these are the words of King David: foreshadowing Christ’s words on the cross:

What about those times when we know–that injustice has been done?

There’s no question of innocence being judged as guilt. Vengeance: Is it ever justifiable?

In the words of Luisa Piccarreta:

My stripped Jesus, allow me to pour myself out, otherwise I cannot go on seeing You suffer so much.
How can this be? You, who clothe all created things – the sun with light, the heavens with stars, the
plants with leaves, the birds with feathers – You, stripped!? What daring! But my loving Jesus,
through the light He sends forth from His eyes, tells me: “Be silent, O child – it was necessary that
I be stripped, in order to repair for many who strip themselves of every modesty, of purity and of
innocence; who strip themselves of every good and virtue, and of my Grace, clothing themselves with
every brutality, and living like brutes. With my virginal blush I wanted to repair for so many
dishonesties, luxuries and brutal pleasures. Therefore, be attentive to everything I do; pray and repair
with Me, and calm yourself.”

How do we see the world?

Either we trust Jesus, or we don’t.

Writing from a Roman prison St. Paul advised thinking about “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, and worth of excellence.”

Can’t we do that from our living rooms?

Yes–if we resolve to guard what we allow into the sacred spaces of our homes and our minds by taking custody of our senses.

Much of the reporting about the Church, from Catholic media outlets, seems interested in stirring up unrest, fear, anxiety, anger, confusion, and more. There might be more peace and less anxiety in our lives if we curb our media intake. That’s not to suggest that we should be ignorant about what’s going on. It is to suggest that at the end of the day, it would seem to be a simple either/or.

Either I trust God or I don’t. And not just with the small stuff but with the big stuff: the future of the country, the Synod in Rome, our children, our own lives, His faithfulness.

Louis Pranzini and the Laborers: Lesson from St. Therese

Today, October 1st, is the feast day of The Little Flower, St. Therese of Lisieux, one of only thirty-six saints to be declared a Doctor of the Church. In his twenty-six year pontificate, Pope John Paul ll canonized around 482 saints–only one of whom he conferred the honorific of doctor. Despite these accolades, St. Therese of Lisieux felt alien to me. I couldn’t identify with her “little way.” Louis Pranzini and the Laborers: Lesson from St. Therese.

Until I read an exquisite book on Saint Therese and got a glimpse of the reasoning behind Pope John Paul’s decision to elevate this French Carmelite nun who died at twenty-four.

“Many books have been written on the “little way” as a means to holiness,” Father Marc Foley writes. “This is not one of them. This is about Therese’s spirituality as a means of preserving sanity in an often insane world.(Italics mine.) Perspective was at the core of Therese’s sanity. She saw all things in the light of eternity. This vision gave her a sense of proportionality that kept her sane.”

The Love That Keeps Us Sane

More on Father Foley’s book momentarily. But first, an explanation of this peculiar title–Louis Pranzini and the Laborers., and strange image.

The murders of a a courtesan, her servant and servant’s daughter shocked 1887 France. The women are graphically and obscenely pictured in this newspaper image guaranteed to foment the French citizenry. Hence fourteen-year-old Therese Martin heard about accused murderer Louis Pranzini’s –also pictured on the left and right of the image–scheduled execution. In The Story of a Soul, Saint Therese wrote, “Jesus made me a fisher of men. I longed to work for the conversion of sinners with a passion I’d never felt before. Love filled my heart. I forgot myself and henceforth was happy.”

Lesson from St Therese.

It’s the key, isn’t it? “I forgot myself and henceforth was happy.” Louis Pranzini and the Laborers. Will we live out our lives in theodrama or egodrama?

Remember last Sunday’s Gospel? The one where the laborer who worked for just one hour gets the same wage as the one who worked for eight? In the hot sun? It’s provocative, intentionally so. It isn’t possible to listen to that passage and not think of those who came late to truth, to the faith, to Truth.

Like me.

Jesus told his disciples this parable:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner
who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard.
After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage,
he sent them into his vineyard.
Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard,
and I will give you what is just.’
So they went off…So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more,
but each of them also got the usual wage.
And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying,
‘These last ones worked only one hour,
and you have made them equal to us,
who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’
He said to one of them in reply,
‘My friend, I am not cheating you.
Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?
Take what is yours and go.

In his homily, Bishop Barron declares that no Gospel reading causes the consternation of this one. He writes many find this “the most disturbing of all Christ’s gospels.”

Do any of us really find this answer satisfying? Don’t most of us instinctually side with the complainers? Have you noticed that the one virtue that even little children seem implicitly to understand is justice? “It’s just not fair!” Well, this just doesn’t seem fair. 

But we should squint at this story through the lens of the prophet Isaiah’s reminder that God’s ways are not our ways. Does this story represent an undermining of justice? No; rather, it is a showing forth of the justice that flows from God’s vision of things.

Gospel Reflection Sunday September 25

Consider that fourteen-year-old future saint who was given the grace to thirst for souls: no exceptions.

Therese understood the danger of curiosity

Her sister Celine observed that Therese never asked for news. The nun who was considered one of the poorest examples of a Carmelite kept “custody of her senses.” It’s an arresting phrase, isn’t it? A most fitting way to stay away from gossip and detraction, minding her own business.

Father Marc Foley explains:

These practices of restraint, which traditional spirituality has labeled as “custody of the senses,” may sound archaic to the modern ear; they smack of an outdated spirituality. But if we practice them rightly, we will discover that they can help keep us sane.

Custody of the senses helps keep us sane because it curbs curiosity and helps heal the impulsiveness that underlies it.

Impulsiveness is a form of insanity that deprives us of self-determination because it robs our choices of intentionality. In his book Neurotic Styles, psychologist David Shapiro writes the following of the experience of impulse: It is an experience of having executed a significant action, not a trivial one, without a clear and complete sense of motivation, decision, or sustained wish. It is an experience of an action, in other words, that does not feel completely deliberate or fully intended.

The Love That Keeps Us Sane

We know better than to judge another, don’t we? An honest examination of our conscience reveals our rash judgments. In fact Saint Augustine writes that only God can feed us with judgment.

“What any man is today, that man scarcely knows. Still in some way, he does know what he is today. What he will be tomorrow, however, he does not know. Hence the Lord, who assigns to each what is owed to him, feeds his sheep with judgment, giving some things to one group, other things to another, and to each his due. For he knows what he is doing. With judgement he feeds those whom he, being judged himself, redeemed. Therefore he himself feeds his sheep with judgment.

Making a gift of our wounds

An unanticipated consequence of my new website was the loss of three years of articles. I enjoyed retrieving these older articles, especially those from the beginning of the pandemic of fear. Although I wrote this in April of 2020, I’m republishing it today. While reading this piece again, I was stunned by how quickly I’ve forgotten those many months when the churches were closed.

Therefore this one is republished in gratitude that:

“Making a gift of our wounds” is a most peculiar phrase for a piece on Ascension Sunday. Had I not listened to Father John Paul Mary’s homily on the EWTN daily mass this past Thursday, the phrase would never have occurred to me. But the more I ponder the words of the priest, the more I understand.

A brief aside-until the churches closed, neither my husband nor I had never participated in a television mass or heard of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word. Now a day without these Friars and their sacraments spilling into our living room-consecrating our home- is unimaginable. A most surprising gift of these strange times we are living in.

Fr. John Paul began his Thursday morning homily by reading an excerpt from a letter from a grief-stricken woman in Oceanside, California. Easter was supposed to be a time of overwhelming joy and celebration but she felt no gladness, only unrelenting sadness. Her husband had died and his body lay in the morgue. There could be no funeral and her grief was raw and terrible.

Looking directly at the camera, Fr. John Paul said slowly, emphatically, and with authority, “You are not alone. All members in the Mystical Body of Christ are praying for you. Christ, our Head, is with you.”

Turning to his left, he pointed to the extraordinary profusion of roses sent in response to the Friars’ request for a rose garden for Our Lady. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13th, 2020 would viewers send a single rose? Indeed they did: over 6000 roses arrived at that chapel from all over the world.

The priest said, “This is gift. There is no way the Friars and I can express our gratitude for your love of Our Lady, EWTN and for us.

Turning to the Gospel reading for Thursday, Fr. John Paul said, “The Christian life is a journey filled with sadness and grief.”

With a smile, he added, “But there is joy too!” How can we look at those roses and not feel joy? Or the night sky with its millions of stars?

“Listen once again to His words to the Apostles-and to us” he said:

“A little while, and you will see me no more; again a little while, and you will see me.” Some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, `A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, `because I go to the Father’?”

They said, “What does he mean by `a little while’? We do not know what he means.” Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him; so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, `A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’?

Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

Since it was Ascension Thursday, Fr. John Paul described the perfected resurrected body of Christ as perfected and resurrected but retaining all of His wounds:

The wounds in His head from the crown of thorns.The wounds from the nails in His hands.On His feet.The wound in His side from the Roman soldier’s lance plunging into His heart and releasing a gush of blood and water.

Fr. John Paul explains:

“Jesus retains all those wounds as gift to Our Father. See Father what I bring you? Look at my head, my feet, my hands and side.

“Justice has been done. I have overcome the world. By these wounds, Humanity has been restored to its rightful place as your sons and daughters.

“I have conquered sin and death for they are the same.”

Never did I think to ask myself why the wounds remain in the perfected Body of the Resurrected Lord.

Until now.

And I think of what I know-what we all know about joy and sorrow, they are one and the same. Long ago, I memorized the words of Kahil Gibran, even in those dark years of atheism, I understood the truth of his words.

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was
oftentimes filled with tears.
And how else can it be?

I think of the story of a man prostrate at the foot of the cross. His heart overflowing with contrition, love, sorrow, repentance, and overwhelming desire to give the Lord something… anything.

“Lord, I give you all of my works.” He had written many books which had made him wealthy.

From the cross, he heard, “I gave you the gift of knowledge and understanding so that you could write those books, they are my gifts to you.”

“Lord, I give you my health, vigor and intelligence.”

From the cross, he heard, “These also are my gifts to you, my son.”

“Lord, I give you my loving family, my children and wife.”

“Could you not know I have given these people to you? They were chosen by me-for you.”

After many more failed attempts, the man sobbed, “Lord, what can I give you?”

“Your sins, my son, give me your sins!“

May each one of us seven and a half billion souls learn-yearn- to make a gift of our wounds to Him.

Is It News or Gossip?

It shouldn’t be a difficult distinction. But it is, isn’t it?

Especially if we come across an article confirming our prejudice about a person or institution. And then it starts to roll, the judgment, the outrage. I do precisely what I know not to do–confound the sin by talking to others about this evil person. Without even thinking about it, ignoring the plank in my own eye and pointing out his splinter. Hence, my default position should be silence. I know this, have written about it and yet–I do what I know I shouldn’t.

Why is there the lure in “news?” The word—from the fourteenth century— is defined as announcing a recent event, of public interest, often through broadcasting or media. Hence the enticement. The news appeals to our pride: “listen to me, to what I have to say! And you too will be informed!”

However, just a moment or three of reflection reveals where it all began, right? During the prelapsarian (great word, isn’t it?) time in the Garden of Eden, there was no need for words, just the Beating Heart of the Creator. Until …..”And he said to the woman: ‘Did God really say, ‘You must not eat fruit from any tree in the garden’?

is a prudent suggestion since so much of what is marketed as “news” is, gossip. Is it news or gossip?

In its definition of gossip, the catechism begins with the eighth commandment. And makes my hair stand on end.

Gossip, also known as detraction, is a sin that harms the reputation of others through either lies or truths shared inappropriately. The Catechism of the Catholic Church categorizes it under the 8th Commandment, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” Gossip is an offense against both the truth and another person.0 Detraction is defined as revealing something about another that is true but harmful to that person’s reputation.2 Gossip is a sin that makes others uncomfortable and disrespects the person being discussed.3 The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that a person is guilty of detraction if they disclose another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them without objectively valid reason. It is also continuing to talk about those faults or failings for the purpose of curiosity and not in order to offer help or assistance.

Doesn’t this fit much of what is presented as news?

And not just in secular sites but the Christian and Catholic as well?

After I converted to Catholicism in 2010, I often met Catholics who were devoted to the latest, hottest news in the Catholic world, especially obscure, controversial stories out of the Vatican, as if what happened behind closed doors thousands of miles away was constantly affecting (and threatening) their own beliefs and practices as Catholics.

It seemed to a former Protestant like myself, who had been knee-deep in the endless, fissiparous debates within American Calvinism, to be largely unproductive. Wasn’t the whole point of Catholicism – at least as far as the fundamentals go – that it’s universal? That it doesn’t change? One of its many attractions for me was its timelessness, its ability to retain a healthy, detached confidence even amid crises.

Regardless of what silliness is going on in Catholic media, many of us would do well to take Allen’s advice about outlets that are just as bad as their secular equivalents: Just don’t look.

The measure with which we measure

In a recent piece, Father John Riccardo writes about our “scandal and gossip loving culture.” If we make the mistake of looking and/or listening, the tone of the speaker is often indignant, morally superior. As if this behavior is unthinkable, unique and worthy of condemnation, dangerously enticing us to do what we know we cannot: judge another.

Jesus warns us, “The way you judge others is how you will be judged — the measure with which you measure out will be used to measure you” (Matthew 7:2). Once again, just to be clear, we are to judge actions. Jesus tells us that we judge a tree by its fruits (cf. Mt 7:16). But we cannot judge interiors. I have no access to anyone’s interior. I don’t know the way in which a person might be crying out to God for help, even in the midst of their terrible choices. Sin is, after all, a power, a dominion, an authority that we are powerless to escape on our own, thus our need for a Rescuer to deliver us (cf. Col 1:13). 

Last week ended with Thursday’s Triumph of the Cross followed by Friday’s Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. Her name, Mary, derives from a Hebrew word meaning bitter: a bitterness of silent suffering unknown by any other.

Just as the Sorrowful Mother stood at the foot
of the Cross of Her Son,
and received the last drops of His Blood,
that came forth when His Heart was pierced,
so too is She close to YOU,
carrying you in Her arms,
receiving into Her Heart
the new drops from YOUR pierced heart —
all your pain, all your offerings, all your acts of surrendering, of Faith, of Humility, of Obedience.
She collects them all and unites them to Her Own
and to those of Her Son, Jesus.
This is what keeps open the floodgates of Mercy,
 which the world needs so desperately.

On June 19th of this year, Pope Francis celebrated Blaise Pascal’s 400th birthday with an Apostolic letter that I found riveting. One that recalled memories from my undergraduate college days, memories that illuminate God’s direction and love during the years I bought into the lies of atheism. But even better, the letter teaches, challenges and inspires. First the recollections.

Remember Pascal’s Pensees? The book containing fragments of thoughts (Pensees) from Blaise Pascal? Pascal died before he had the chance to organize the celestial sound-bytes–that’s how they felt to me– into essays. A very good thing, declares Peter Kreeft in his talk on Pascal, the Most Potent Apologist of our Time.

Here are a couple to jolt your memory:

“The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing.”

“All human evil comes from a single cause, man’s inability to sit still in a room.”

Pascal’s book, like Aurelius’ Meditations were well-used and dog-eared during my early ‘lost” years. I was first introduced to Pascal by a remarkable teacher named John Bradshaw who taught a course he called “Humanities.,” at a small Dominican college in Houston, Texas where I worked on my undergraduate degree. Shortly before his ordination as a Catholic priest, he’d left the seminary, the Catholic faith and was kind of a mess. But my internal chaos precluded my seeing anything but Bradshaw’s wisdom. For each of the two-hour classes, he’d toss out snippets of philosophy and wisdom. Like, “If you want to be happy then act as if you’re happy!”

On the fourth century of the birth of Blaise Pascal.

The Pope’s apostolic letter begins: THE GRANDEUR AND MISERY OF MAN–this, writes Pope Francis was the single theme of Blaise Pascal’s brief but but brilliant life. The letter reads like a love letter as Pope Francis explains Pascal’s untrammeled genius. In his teens, Pascal invented a type of computer and his brilliance in mathematics led to his famous wager: It’s better–“even in mere mathematics–to bet on the existence of an infinite God than not.

Always, writes Pope Francis, Pascal was a man “marked by a fundamental awe and openness to reality.” His ‘five penny coaches’ were the first public transportation system and he invented the first vacuum cleaner. A contemporary of Renee Descartes, their philosophies couldn’t be more divergent. While Descartes saw science as the end goal, Pascal viewed it as the means by which we understand the finiteness of everything but God. Our love of noise, distraction, inability to sit still in a room emanate from our understanding of our innate grandeur and misery. Pope Francis quotes Pascal’s “great argument.”

“What is it, then, that this longing and this feeling of helplessness cry out to us, if not that man once enjoyed a true happiness, of which there now remains but an empty trace that he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things he lacks what he cannot obtain from those he has. Yet none of these can provide it, for this infinite abyss cannot be bridged except by an infinite and immutable object, which is God himself”. [32] If man is like “a dispossessed king”, [33] seeking only to recover his lost grandeur while knowing that he is incapable of doing so, then what is he? “What a fantastic creature is man, a novelty, a monstrosity, chaotic, contradictory, prodigious, judge of all things, feeble earthworm, bearer of truth, mire of uncertainty and error, glory and refuse of the universe! Who can undo this tangle?

On the Fourth Centenary of the Birth of Blaise Pascal

Those beguiling words cannot help to invoke thoughts of our origin: Echoes of Eden.

I’ve selected only a couple of points from Pope Francis’ thoughtful reflection on Pascal. Hence this apostolic letter warrants a careful read.

Pascal’s cosmology

In a recent piece, Pascal’s Fire, Robert Royal takes Pascal’s wager and amplifies the brilliance of the sixteenth-century scientist. With mathematics as accessible to him as were words, Pascal reasoned that even the universe of the new Galilean science–the universe was still finite.

We know, Royal writes, that God is infinite: God is not an object in the world but is immeasurably beyond the world. “Spiritually speaking, that means we cannot go to God on our own steam. In mathematics, if you move 1, or 1000, or 1,000,000 miles closer to an infinitely distant point, it’s still infinitely distant. We may turn our minds and hearts to God and find Him, of course. But that’s because He crosses the infinite distance between Himself and us. He alone has the infinite power needed to do so.

An abstract view, you may say. Until you realize that this might be a mathematical way of suggesting why Jesus needed to come to us. We couldn’t go to Him; He made the crucial move first.”

Only when Pascal died were the words of what must have been an explosive, transformational experience revealed.

Pascal knew there are

those of us too lazy, stubborn and/or too married to sin to take the Gospel seriously. But he never stopped working his manifold gifts of intellect, writing and reasoning to persuade others about the critical importance of our immortality. Four-hundred-years ago, men and women were the same. Working assiduously to keep ourselves from thinking about the reality of death through keeping busy and making use of distraction.

It is impossible to believe, Pascal wrote, “unless God inclines the heart.” The true light illuminating death: Jesus.

“The immortality of the soul is so important to us, something that touches us so deeply, that we need to have lost all feeling to be unconcerned with knowing what is at stake… And that is why, among those who are not convinced about this, I would distinguish clearly between those who make every effort to investigate it, and those who go about their lives without being concerned about it or thinking of it”. [67] We know very well that often we attempt to flee death, or to overcome it, thinking that we can “banish the thought of our finite existence” or “remove its power and dispel fear. But Christian faith is not a way of exorcizing the fear of death; rather, it helps us to face death. Sooner or later, we will all pass through that door… The true light that illumines the mystery of death comes from the resurrection of Christ”. [68] Only God’s grace enables the human heart to know God and to live a life of charity. 

Indeed, we will all pass through that door; may the grace of God enable us to attract unbelievers–making use even of our faults and weaknesses.
