The Editing Process: Teenagers and Talking Raccoons

The Editing ProcessBet you thought I was serious when I said I was finished with The Swallow’s Nest.

First my husband blogged to complain about the horrors of living with an author at the end of her book. Then I told you I’d sent it in and had “gone fishing,” which wasn’t quite true.

Sunday Inspiration: “Why I succeed”

Why I succeed

With the Super Bowl coming up today, I thought this would be an appropriate quote for all of us.

Certainly no athelete can be successful without knowing how to accept and learn from failure. And it’s just as apparent that no human being can grow and find meaning and joy in life without letting failure become a friend rather than a foe.

Northanger Abbey: Jane Austen’s Defense of Novels

The Better World 2017 Reading Challenge is even more fun than I expected.
Northanger Abbey

Catherine Morland, heroine of Northanger Abbey from an edition published in 1833.

On January 18th I blogged about the challenge here, and then I promptly got down to business.  First I chose and finished Zane Grey’s Riders of the Purple Sage.

Sunday Inspiration: Be gentle

Be gentle

“Be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here… And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

A Novelist’s Thoughts: Casey Daniels

Casey Daniels I love anniversaries. I love them because sometimes I’m absolutely amazed that I have actually made it to a certain date in my life.  Wedding anniversaries mean that I kept on truckin’ through the bad times as well as the good–not that “keeping on” is always a good thing, mind you.

Sunday Inspiration: Power of Off

power of off

“We are spending far too much of our time doing things that don’t really matter to us.” -Nancy Colier

I was at the beach the other day with my husband — have I mentioned how much I love living in southern Florida? — and as soon as we got our chairs and umbrella set up and started to take in the beautiful view, a woman sitting nearby started a long conversation on her cell phone, just as if she were sitting in her living room.

Reading Challenge: Are You Up For One?

ChallengeSome words are just loaded with meaning, aren’t they? I’m thinking of the word “challenge.” “Challenge,” only second to “resolution,” appears frequently in print and in conversations in January. We’re challenged to exercise more, eat less, drop all our bad habits like a fledgling backpacker, tossing canned goods and bottles of water behind him, ten miles down the Appalachian Trail.

Sunday Inspiration: Our Willingness To Be Vulnerable

I became interested in the Jesuits when I created a Jesuit character, Father Isaiah Colburn, in The Color of Light. As part of my research I began to follow Father James Martin, SJ, on Facebook, as well as the Jesuit magazine, America.

Willingness to be vulnerableThis week I was entranced by America’s story of Andrew Garfield, who plays a missionary in a new Martin Scorsese film, Silence.

Upside Down: Doing Things the Hard Way

Sometimes my best ideas occur in the middle of the night. Sometimes answers to my toughest problems occur then, too.

And sometimes my dream self just says, “You know, it’s a good thing you didn’t want to be an engineer.

upside downThis past week dream self sparkled and tinkled her way into my bedroom and waved her magic “Let’s Get Serious” wand.

Sunday Inspiration: Today is the only day

Today is the only day

“Today is a moment of light surrounded on all sides by darkness and oblivion. In the entire history of the universe, let alone in your own history, there has never been another just like it and there never will be another just like it again. It is the point to which all your yesterdays have been leading since the hour of your birth.
