Sunday Inspiration: Harvey’s Heroes

HeroesWitnessing the devastation and suffering in Texas has been difficult.

The tragic consequences of Hurricane Harvey have reminded me of the terrible destruction of Hurricane Katrina where so many of our friends lived — and where we lived before the storm.

I have cried tears for all the many victims of this historic flood, but I’ve also been inspired by the multitude of heroes who always step forward in such times of crisis.

Aspiring Authors Wanted

Chautauqua Institution, where I spend my summers, is famous for porches nestled together, usually just feet from the road.

Aspiring authors

For the most part it’s also a pedestrian community, so put all that together and you have. . . A distinct lack of privacy.

It’s not unusual for me to run for the phone in my house only to discover the ringing belonged to a neighbor, not me.

Sunday Inspiration: Vote With Your Fork

Vote with your fork

Eat food

Not too much

Mostly plants

— Michael Pollan

The theme of last week — the last of the  Chautauqua season — was one of my favorite subjects: food.

“At the Table: Our Changing Relationship With Food” had fascinating lectures, a food festival every day, and inspiring revelations about how to eat better.

Fake News? How Do We Decide?

fake newsAs some of you may remember, I decided to participate in the Better World Books Reading Challenge this year. I’m happy to say I’ve made significant progress and only have a handful of categories to complete.

So far my two most difficult reads have been Life by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, my book over 400 pages, and most recently The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L.

Lily Dale: Mediums and Messages at Spiritualism’s Center

Readers who want to be writers sometimes tell me that they’re at a disadvantage because they’ve never lived anywhere interesting enough to set a book.
Lily Dale

Aren’t we glad Agatha Christie, who set all her Miss Marple books in St.

Sunday Inspiration: Conquering Fear

conquering fear“I learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he would conquers that fear.” -Nelson Mandela

It’s been a scary week, not only in our world but here at Chautauqua Institution where The Nature of Fear has been the theme this past week.

23 and Me: Classifying Fictional Characters

While I’m taking time off this summer, I’m also working on my next novel for Mira Books.

CharactersYou might not know I’m working if you watch me. Days pass without my opening my computer. But inside my head, I’m slowly working through what I know and don’t know about the four major characters who will soon begin their lives on paper.

Sunday Inspiration: The Joy of Laughter

the joy of laughter “A life full of laughter is a life well spent.” -Sophie Scott

When we celebrated my husband’s Big Birthday last weekend, the moments I enjoyed most were hearing the laugher of our four children and four grandchildren as everyone shared stories on our porch.

The joy of laughter is one of the greatest of blessings in my life, and I’m so thankful that my family has so much to laugh about.
