Same Books (another) New Look!

I think we are finally there, don’t you? Absolutely loving the rainbow colour pop of my gorgeous Foodie Romances. A huge thanks to my nameless (because she’s very busy writing her own mega successful books) designer.

I have been woefully bad at updating this website and vow to pop on here more often. For the time being, though, I just want to share that all of my foodie books are currently 99p/c on Kindle until the end of the year. On Jan 1st 2025, they will go back to full price and bargains will be a now and then thing. So if you haven’t yet sampled all of them, now is an excellent time to fill your stocking (or TBR pile) and play catch up.

Simply head to mybook.to/iceskatesandcupcakes where you will be able to access all of my books. Happy reading! xx

Same Books, New Look!

After much tweaking (and more image changes than Madonna) I am pleased to reveal Foodie Romance Journey books 1-10 in all their upgraded rom-com gorgeousness… And if you aren’t a subscriber to my newsletter and haven’t yet seen a sneak peek of Spin the Bottle, my May 2023 release, you can catch a wee glimpse of that too in my new series image banner 😉

It’s been a while since I have updated my website and posted a blog! Every year when its domain is up for renewal, I vow I will get better at keeping on top of it, alas, writing and social media marketing sucks up most of my part-time working hours, and once again I end up very naughtily letting things slide… But anyway, as you can see, I have been pretty busy and the good news is there are lots more Foodie Romance Journey books to come – including a spin-off series featuring some of the characters from ‘Pavlova’ at some point in the not too distant future. My new – and regimented – schedule will be a mid-May and mid-September publication for the FRJ books, and the list of titles waiting to see their foodie themes in print is longer than a giraffe’s neck. I would say spaghetti, but seriously, it is that long!

If you haven’t yet caught up with my characters’ antics (my books are standalone, as well as being a series), then why not treat yourself to some escapist romance and curl up with a custard tart or a big fat piece of layer cake with one or both of my latest tasty offerings, The Custard Tart Cafe by the Sea and The Wedding Cake? Links and blurbs below:

Spin the Bottle deets coming at you in the New Year, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, I’d best get on with writing it!

One summer. Two frustratingly stubborn perfectionists… and a forced proximity plot twist.

WILLOW
has opened a custard tart cafe at a popular English beach. Her unique and magical spin on the Portuguese pastel de nata has customers queuing outside the door to taste her bestsellers.

TIAGO’S grandparents are purveyors of The Real Deal: authentic custard tarts made in Portugal, where his family have been lovingly baking them for centuries. When he moves to England for a new job and chances upon Willow’s ‘wondrous wares’, he is out for war.

At least that’s his intention. But when serendipity brings Willow and Tiago back together at the departures desk in Bristol airport – destination Faro – outrage isn’t the only spark that flies…

A steamy enemies-to-lovers romance. But will there be a sweet happy-ever-after?

FREYA ASHCROFT, owner and culinary whizz at Marbella’s five star bakery (and general queen of dating disasters), is going to need a miracle to save this date. If only that was her sole dilemma. She’s also fallen head over heels in love with super hot fitness instructor, TIM NUTKINS… and his rippling abs.

Which would be fine, if he wasn’t one of her aforementioned male clients.

A forced proximity rollercoaster of a forbidden love romance with a sweet happy-ever-after.

Get a FREE copy of The Cocktail Bar when You Sign Up to My Newsletter!

*You can unsubscribe at any time and I don’t ‘do’ spam…*

To celebrate the launch of my self-publishing indie career, I am giving away a FREE Kindle copy of THE COCKTAIL BAR (the first title in my Foodie Romance Journeys series) to everybody who signs up for my monthly newsletter.

Just hit the link and it will take you to the sign up page and download page: https://bit.ly/3GgI4ZZ

The Cocktail Bar has been one of my favourite stories to write and it has racked up some glowing reviews. The idea for the book first came to me when I asked a ‘what if’ question… this one being: What if a cocktail bar opened in Glastonbury High Street? I grew up in the quirky English town and believe me, there were not many choices for a good night out in your late teens/early twenties. We’d often have to travel miles to Bristol or Taunton for a decent disco or night club.

Anyway, then I dreamed up River Jackson and the rest is history.

Here’s the blurb:

Rock star, River Jackson, is back in his hometown of Glastonbury to open a cocktail bar… and the locals aren’t impressed.

Seductive Georgina is proving too hot to handle; band mate, Angelic Alice, is messing with his heart and his head; his mum is a hippie-dippy liability; his school friends have resorted to violence – oh, and his band manager, Lennie, AND the media are on his trail.

But River is armed with a magical Mexican elixir which will change the lives of the Three Chosen Ones. Once the Mexican wave of joy takes a hold of the town, he’s glad he didn’t lose his proverbial bottle.

Pity he hasn’t taken better care of the real one…

Enjoy the book and I look forward to being in touch at the beginning of each month with my book news and relevant bits and pieces.

I am officially an Indie Author!

An exciting new journey lies ahead…

A very belated Happy New Year to you all!

I have been utterly lax at keeping my website (and blog) up-to-date, so here I am, vowing to post a little more regularly from now on… and, with some really wonderful news: I am officially an indie author 🙂

As some of you may know, my first three novels were published by the brilliant Crooked Cat. However, to cut a long story short, CC no longer exists in its original form and that meant many of us romance authors needed to find new homes. After the usual round of submissions to agents and digi publishers (and the usual replies ‘we love your writing but we aren’t sure how to market your books’ (sigh), I decided to embrace indie and stop banging my head against a brick wall.

I am so glad I did. It’s such a liberating feeling to no longer be in limbo or to be sitting on my laurels awaiting the verdict of the gatekeepers. It’s also amazing to take the creative reins and steam ahead with my own plans… Rest assured, I work with a fabulous editor who makes sure the stories shine and I don’t get too carried away, LOL.

Now that all of the rights have reverted to me for my trio of novels, I have reordered my titles in the Foodie Romance Journeys series, updated their covers, made their insides a little more sparkly… and I am ready to GO.

There’s a very steep learning curve ahead of me. I’ve just started a highly recommended Ads for Authors course, courtesy of Mark Dawson (and thanks to the recommendation by a number of successful self-published friends). I have joined TikTok too – much to my kids’ embarrassment. And in June I will be heading to Madrid for a self-publishing conference.

Thanking you all for supporting me thus far and here’s to a great bookish year for everyone!

This extract is taken from Chapter Four, after Lexi learns her boyfriend Ben has been cheating on her, dumps him and goes down to Devon to spend Christmas with her family. She’s looking forward to a family Christmas with the traditional carol service around the Christmas tree on the green on Christmas Eve but is surprised to discover that the tree hasn’t been decorated yet.

Extract 2

‘Your mum said you went for a walk to look at the lights. You always used to love doing that at Christmas time,’ her dad said. ‘The village looks beautiful all lit up, doesn’t it?’

‘Gorgeous! Although, I only went as far as the green.’ Lexi swallowed a mouthful of the pie before continuing. ‘I was surprised to see that the fir tree isn’t decorated yet. I thought they always did it the second week of December. I notice that it’s cordoned off, though, so I guess they’re going to do it on Monday.’

‘They’re not decorating it at all.  The council want to chop the tree down. They said that it’s unsafe.’ Granny Mabe told her. ‘Load of rubbish if you ask me.’

‘What? Surely not?’ Lexi asked incredulously.

She saw her parents exchange looks. Then her father said, ‘I’m afraid so. That’s why that part of the green is cordoned off. They don’t want anyone going on it in case one of the branches falls off the tree.’

Lexi was stunned. She couldn’t imagine Christmas without the traditional Christmas Eve carol service around the huge fir tree on the green. ‘When did they say this? Can’t they do anything to save the tree?’

‘Apparently not. We weren’t told until this Thursday, which didn’t give us much time to do anything. We kept expecting the tree to be decorated any day, and when we enquired, the council replied that they were dealing with it. Then on Thursday we were told that the tree was too dangerous and would probably have to come down. Some of the branches are dying back and they’re worried that the pressure of the lights and decorations might cause the branches to break and injure someone.’

‘Oh no! Can’t they simply chop off the affected branches?’ Lexi asked in dismay. The huge fir tree was an important feature of the village. She couldn’t bear to think of it being chopped down.

‘I don’t know, dear. There were a couple of men looking at it last week – I think they must have been tree surgeons; one of them was on one of those mobile platform things and checking out the branches at the top of the tree. He must have declared it unsafe,’ her mother said. ‘Everyone’s really sad about it. There’s talk of moving the carol service to the square, but it won’t be the same.’

This was awful, Lexi thought. The carol service around the Lystone Christmas tree was such a big part of Christmas. People came from miles around to take part. And it was such a shame for it to happen this year, too, when Jay was coming over from Canada. It was their first family Christmas for years and it would have been lovely for them all to attend the traditional ‘lighting the tree’ carol service together, just like they used to do.

Surely there was something they could do to save the tree.

I’m certainly intrigued to find out more!

Raising a Christmassy glass of Baileys on ice to you, Karen on publication day. I hope TBCE soars as high as Santa’s reindeer!

The Brand New Romance from Bestselling Author, Lizzie Chantree!

Shh… It’s Our Secret

Lizzie’s books always put a smile on my face. Her writing is so quirky, engaging and unique, and her female MCs are truly kick-ass and inspirational! So it’s brilliant to have her back on the blog to talk about her latest book, Shh… It’s Our Secret. If you haven’t got your copy yet, read on and get ordering…

Thank you for inviting me onto your blog today, Isabella, and for the amazing support of the launch of my latest book!

It’s possible that we all might have kept a secret or two at one point. It could be yours, your partners or a friend’s. It may be harmless, or life changing. For Violet, in Shh… It’s our secret, the secret she is keeping could destroy everything about the quiet life she has built up, managing a rundown café bar at the centre of a small town in Kent.

With many job losses and shops shutting down locally, Violet’s secret could bring immense wealth into the community, push her out of the shadows that she has been hiding in since the death of her parents and into the limelight. She has to find the self-confidence to stand up for herself, when all around her people seem to miss how special she really is.

Book Blurb:

Violet has a secret that could change the lives of everyone she knows and loves, especially the regulars at the run-down café bar where she works. After losing her parents at a young age, they are the closest thing she has to a family and she feels responsible for them.

Kai is a jaded music producer who has just moved outside of town. Seeking solitude from the stress of his job, he’s looking for seclusion. The only problem is he can’t seem to escape the band members and songwriters who keep showing up at his house.

When Kai wanders into the bar and Violet’s life, he accidentally discovers her closely guarded secret. Can Kai help her rediscover her self-confidence or should some secrets remain undiscovered?

Book Review: Everything Happens for a Reason, by Katie Allen

A much-needed Novel with Stillbirth as its Central Theme…

EHFAR is quite simply a triumph. For too many years the UK’s mainstream publishing world has shied away from any kind of story with a stillbirth narrative. I know this first hand through my own encounters and experiences. So Kudos to Orenda Books for being the change. And kudos to Katie Allen for penning this absolutely exquisite novel.

I understand that I am one of the first stillbirth parents to read the story – and I am deeply honoured.

This is a clever and multifaceted book. Because grief is not one-dimensional. It doesn’t follow a set pattern. It is not one-size-fits-all.

Particularly this very unique kind of baby loss.

It is a tale of loss, yes; it is deeply moving, too. You will, at times, need tissues. But it is also a book of hope and ambition and making sense of the world, a tale of acting spontaneously, living in the moment and throwing caution to the wind. The cast of characters is so 3D you could touch them.

It is witty. Wonderfully and acceptably so. At times there was something Danny Wallace-meets-Bridget Jones about the funny bits. In fact, the story (brilliantly told in email form) calls for this specific brand of dry humour. This is what makes the poignant bits sharper. It makes the heartbreaking bits hit home harder. It makes everything flow. Therein lies the beauty.

Through Rachel’s story, the author articulates so many little things that I’ve never even spoken about with my circle of baby loss mums. Maybe I always assumed them inconsequential, something to quietly grin and bare? Now I know that they weren’t. Now I know I was not alone. Somehow, this has enabled me to de-ice my own deeply buried thoughts and experiences over the past few days as I’ve immersed myself in the narrative.

The people list is one example…

And this line will stay with me:

“Every day they stayed silent, they made you feel smaller.”

I also felt sorry for a lot of people after my baby died. I didn’t realise that until Rachel Summers, EHFAR’s MC pointed it out to me:

I felt sorry for the midwife who told me my baby had no heartbeat, I felt sorry for the two midwives who saw me through the twenty-one hour labour. One of them ‘hoped she wouldn’t see me again’ after she’d gone home for her supper and her sleep and returned the next day after breakfast. Unfortunately, I let her down. We were still very much there.

I felt horrendously sorry for her. It was the first stillbirth she had encountered. There was no adequate training eleven years ago, as there is now via charities such as SANDS. There was no bereavement suite. You gave birth next door to screaming, healthy babies and jubilant parents. You tried to numb the pain of your turmoil.

I felt the weight of all of these strangers’ grief more than my own in the early days.

I felt sorry for the vicar. She called us when we were in Blockbusters picking out a DVD. We couldn’t decide between Mamma Mia and something else. The vicar wanted us to decide on psalms and readings. Right there in the middle of Blockbusters. I felt sorry for her timing.

I felt even more sorry for her when she mistakenly referred to our daughter as Sophie. Twice. During the burial.

“She’s called April,” my mum corrected her over and over.

I felt so embarrassed for her. Maybe it was her first stillbirth burial? Maybe it was her first baby burial? I felt her pain as sharply as the frostbitten January ground beneath my feet as we gathered around the tiny hole and I held my tiny posy of pastel roses in readiness to scatter them on top of the miniature white coffin.

I felt sorry for a lot of people, but I didn’t feel sorry for those who remained silent, for those who’d let their unspoken words hang in the air, gathering mould and dust. A clumsy word showed thought; a heart-in-the-right-place sentence, no matter how poorly it had been strung together, was somebody making the effort to reach out at least. Even if it symbolised that family member or friend or acquaintance had now brushed my baby’s existence neatly under the carpet, never to bring her up in conversation again.

I never shared this frustration with anyone.

And oh, yes, I made lists of said silent people – mental ones, I deleted them from Facebook where they’d surely seen my status update, I deleted them from eye contact, I deleted them from address books. If they could pretend my baby didn’t exist, I could pretend they were nothing more than a figment of my imagination too.

Katie Allen’s writing has brought all of this to the surface (and much, much more) these past few days. In a healing way. In a cathartic way. This was yet another subconscious layer that needed to be brought to the fore more than a decade on. Now I can face it, accept it and learn to be okay with it.

And that’s what we do when we share our stillbirth stories, isn’t it? We give others permission to share theirs. We transmute the energy. We inspire. The words reach out far beyond the page.

This novel may not be Katie’s exact story but it is loosely based on it, and it is one epic tale. I cannot recommend it highly enough. May it foster much-needed understanding so that society supports and nurtures all parents who will sadly continue to know this tragedy in the future.

Hop on to Katie Allen’s website for more details on publishing dates and stockists by clicking this link…

A huge thank you to Katie and her publisher, Orenda Books for the ARC.

Bubblegum and Blazers: Book 7 in the Foodie Romance Journeys

Would You go back to School after 21 Summers…?

I’m excited to tell you that my brand new novel, Bubblegum and Blazers is now up for pre-order. I had so much fun writing this story during lockdown and I hope that it offers bookworms the same level of escapism as it gave me imagining and putting it together 🙂

What’s it all about? Well, here’s the blurb:

When Ali, Blake, Charlotte, and Grant sign contracts to star in a Back to School reality TV show, LOVE is the very last thing on their minds:Ali flies to the UK from New Zealand, intrigued by the golden opportunity to advance her amateur social media influencer career.Blake carpe diems the moment with both hands after a constant flurry of bad luck.Charlotte jumps at the chance to relive her sporting glories of the past – and take a hiatus from her humdrum marriage. And Grant is just relieved to get away from his failing second-hand music shop. But once the advances hit their bank accounts, it soon becomes apparent that producer Jock’s Pied Piper-style offer to change their lives is distinctly lacking in sherbet fizz!In fact, the only sweet thing about this gig for the former students and the rest of their Bubblegum and Blazers competitors, may just be the packet of candy in their pockets.Re-enacting their past is a rollercoaster of revelations, retaliation, and unlikely romance in a gold-fish bowl of mayhem where Raphael (Agony Uncle of the school sweet shop) and his rhubarb and custards reign supreme…

I can’t wait to see what you think: roll on 1st July 2021!

To pre-order your Kindle copy for the unbeatable price of just 99p/c, click on the button below to go to your country’s Amazon page. I’ll be sharing the link for the paperback edition closer to pub date.

Networking for Writers | The Fantastic New Non-Fiction Book by Lizzie Chantree

I am delighted to host good friend and fellow author, Lizzie Chantree on the blog today. Her absolute treasure trove of a resource, ‘Networking for Writers’ publishes on the 29th October, and I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the ARC back in the summer.

It really is a Bible for all authors, no matter how well-established they may be; full of hints and tips, and thinking-outside-of-the-box ways to drive sales, visibility, and marketing.

Here’s the blurb:

Are you swamped with book marketing and looking for a way to find new sales? Learn simple and effective networking techniques, to grow your readership and connect with other authors and book lovers, today!

Whether you are a new or experienced writer, self-published or traditionally published, this book will show you how to grow your readership and author network, through some of the most powerful of all marketing tools – word of mouth and recommendation.

This book will show you:

How networking can help you sell more books.

Why author branding is important.

How networking hours work.

Specific Facebook groups for writers.

How to utilise social media to grow your readership.

How not to waste valuable writing time.

How to make our marketing more effective.

Throughout Networking for Writers, we will explore running or attending book signings, hosting seminars, finding a writing buddy or mentor, author networking groups, social media planning and so much more.

And here’s an extract:

I have always been fascinated with information and learning new things. Over the years, I’ve met lots of people who I now see as part of my ‘network,’ my group of interconnected friends and acquaintances. They have helped me to evolve into the bestselling author I am today.

I have had a very varied career path, and I believe that a lot of my success is due to the contacts I have made at every stage of my working life. These connections are fluid and change all the time. The links can reach across decades and the process ebbs and flows both ways. This book has been written in uncertain times, during the global pandemic, but even now, when people are isolated and unsure, they have found new ways to connect, to reach out and communicate and to inspire each other with innovation and kindness.

I have written this book to help writers find their own network and learn how to communicate well with their readers and social media followers. I hope it will offer support to new writers, but also assist established creatives and writers, directing them towards new methods of establishing their writing brand and expanding their social media sites beyond recognition.

Lizzie is so well-connected, and that really is a result of her practicing what she preaches. This stuff works! Anybody who follows her on Twitter or Facebook knows how much time she puts into the hugely successful hashtag social event #CreativeBizHour (every Monday evening), and how committed she is to her Facebook group, Lizzie’s Book Group. You can find links to take you to both below in Lizzie’s author bio. Now all that remains is for me to implore you to BUY THIS AMAZING BOOK!
