Just write.
Just write. That was my message at Bolton Primary today.
We chatted about a lot of other things. We created a weird story, discussed why it didn’t work, and we figured out what we actually need in a good story, but we kept coming back to that one idea: Just write.
And this much I know is true: There will be good days filled with all the right words dripping down luscious description. There will also be terrible days. There will be essays filled with overwrought prose, and poems filled with alliteration and way too much onomatopoeia. There will be broken pencils and misplaced commas. But, over time, and with lots of work, you will get better.
Even at 33, I still need to hear that myself.
Just write.

Presenting to kindergarteners
On Monday, I got to spend some time at Oak Creek Elementary with a group of very excited kindergarteners. We discussed how to tell stories. We began by brainstorming ideas, then we tried to figure out what kind of story we wanted to tell, then we dove in. We created a story about Barry, the little chicken who found an egg, sat on it, and watched in delight as it hatched…into a pterodactyl! Our story wasn’t perfect, and Mrs. Coleman gave us some great advice on how we might revise it for next time. What a fun and imaginative day!

Losing my breath
Yesterday, my publisher, Lycaon Press, closed its doors…one month before my book is scheduled for release. For a moment, I couldn’t catch my breath. All the hard work, the hours spent writing and revising and marketing and publishing just slipped out the window. The air stuck in my throat.
But those shallow moments passed, and I slowly opened my mouth, and a whisper of life flowed in.
Lycaon has decided to do ONE print run of my novel, and then I am on my own.
Hearing those words, though, was like a breath of fresh air. I will have my first print run. My words will fill those pages and then…well, I have a lot of work to do.
For now, I’ll keep it simple. I’ll try breathing.

Shadowgirl — the back cover
Shadowgirl has gone to the presses! Here’s what you’ll see on the back cover:
Áine lives in the light, but she is haunted by darkness, and when her fey powers blaze out of control, she escapes into the Shadowlands. But she cannot outrun her past. Fire fey and a rising darkness threaten the light, burning a path across the veil. Her fiery dreams come to life, and with the help of Hennessy, an uninhibited Irish girl, Áine dives into the flames to discover who she truly is. Her mother burned to keep her secret safe, and now Áine wields the deadly Eta. She must learn to fight in the shadows — or die in the flames. This is not a fairy tale.
