Color me in: Drawing Dragons Day 69
Wonder asked for a dragon that he could color in. So, I complied, of course.
He’s going to color it in, but if anyone else does, send me the results and I’ll draw you a dragon too!
Here she is in all her glory, straight from this reference:
Keep creating!

Turning another page: Drawing Dragons Day 67 & 68
We’re doubling up today because I got a new sketch book! I decided to decorate the front page, but couldn’t find a pencil ANYWHERE.
Freaks out.
Draws some weird stuff.
Forgets a word.
Here you go.
Enjoy.
Keep creating,
Kate

Hovering: Drawing Dragons Day 66
This dragon is hovering, but we just landed in Florida. I’m headed to AWP (a writer’s conference), and Bob and Wonder are headed to watch spring training.
We will all be in our element!
Speaking of elements, but not at all, I drew this dragon in pencil, and there was A LOT of erasing going on. Sometimes creating has a lot to do with taking things away.
Here’s to a day full of creating!

Practicing Flight: Drawing Dragons Day 65
We leave at 6:30AM tomorrow, which means a 4AM wakeup call.
Mama Dragon does not do those well, so I must go to bed.
But, before I go, a little dragon, practicing for tomorrow’s flight.
No pencil this time, just straight to ink. I think I’m getting better! Except for that funky tail. But maybe this dragon just IS THAT FUNKY.
Keep creating,
Kate

I need rainbow pens: Drawing Dragons Day 64
That’s it. I need new pens. The range of colors simply did not suit my longings this evening. Plus, I am clearly lacking in a glitter marker.
How am I supposed to draw a unicorn-dragon with such a conspicuous lack of sparkle?
Still, I love her. Her name is Rainbow Briter, and she is a redraw of this one, which was full of spicy salsa:
The newly horned Rainow Briter clearly reminds me of this prism of light:

I just looked up that Rainbow Brite image, and I went up this rainbow of shining light: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp74T...
You’re welcome.
In short, my uni-dragon needs a mane once I get some more colors.
Stay tuned, and in the meantime, keep creating,
Kate

Proud: Drawing Dragons Day 63
I was thinking today about what I’m proud of. To start, I’m proud of that preposition ending that sentence. I’m proud I know what it is, and I’m proud that I don’t care.
I’m proud of how hard I’ve worked, but I’m also proud of when I haven’t. I’m proud of lazy days playing board games while the emails pour in. I’m proud of my creativity, imagination, and smarts. I’m proud of myself.
That’s a hard thing to say. All the stuff above did not come easy. But, it’s what I’m teaching my son — to be proud of himself — so why can’t I do the same?
Why can’t I appreciate what I’ve done? Puff myself up, and be proud?
So, here’s a tiny dragon — swirling, puffed up, proud. May he give you an example so today you can say: I am proud of myself too.

Smile: Drawing Dragons Day 61
I mentored this amazing young man through Young Willamette Writers. His stories are so clear and his worlds so wonderfully built. He writes nothing like I do, and I love reading his work. It’s not just the words; it’s the ideas.
When he saw my dragons, he said to try some different expressions. Funny, tricky, insistent — try something new.
This is for him. A dragon with a smile, from this reference.
Sending you a smile,
Kate

Chomp: Drawing Dragons Day 60
Guzzle guzzle guzzle munch munch gobble gobble
CHOMP.
Here’s some dragon teeth for you.
The reference is from a website on How to Draw Dragons which is obviously a place where I will spend much more time.
It reminds me of the sandbox where I grew up.
Out behind the house, we had a big tractor tire, filled with sand. Not playground sand, mind you, but sand they must have dragged up from a beach or lake somewhere. Silt and mud.
But beneath, I knew there was something else. If only I could dig deep enough, I’d find it.
Keep digging,
Kate

Old McDonald Had a Farm: Drawing Dragons Day 59
Old McDonald had a farm, EIEIO!
And on his farm he had a pig?
No. Goat?
No. Dragon?
Yes.
EIEIO!
Here’s to better farms and a little bit more magic,
Kate
