Lambda Literary Writers Retreat 2014
The information for the 2014 Lambda Literary Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices was just released. I’m thinking of going again, but not as a fellow of one of the workshop programs. This year, Lambda is welcoming past fellows at a reduced tuition, giving them the option of participating in social events, attending lectures, with read more »

On My Bookshelf: Queerness & Gender
Not that long ago, before the snow and Durham Region power outages happened, I was in California at the Lambda Literary Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices. I was learning stuff, and realizing I didn’t know a lot of stuff. I was also realizing I was confused about things I was taught to take as read more »

Let’s Reboot Ready or Not, Shall We?
The show: Thanks to YouTube, one of my childhood TV shows is now accessible again. Ready or Not was a Canadian half-hour show centered around two best friends, Busy (Lani Billard) and Amanda (Laura Bertram), navigating life through the preteen years, into their early teens. It aired from 1993 to 1997 in Canada and the read more »

Paul Walker, Socia Media, and Death
I don’t often update my personal blog, mostly because I just can’t behind blogging just for the sake of blogging. I already have enough chores to procrastinate and whine about. But once in a while, I get some thoughts on a particular subject, and then more thoughts follow that one, and then it starts to read more »

Advice to Writers from Writers: to Take or Not to Take
**Note: This post is copied from the Reading as Writers website blog.** In August, author Guy Gavriel Kay made a tweet that attracted quite a bit of response from the Twitterverse. He wrote: “My Saturday morning writer’s advice for writers: try not to get hung up on writers’ advice for writers.” Guy Gavriel Kay will read more »

Confessions of a Critiquing Addict
**Note: This post was copied from the blog of the Reading as Writers website** I’ve been overdosing on critiques lately…willingly. I asked for it! RAW Critters launched in September. This is an online critique group I facilitate through the website, specifically for members of the Writers’ Community of Durham Region. With two groups of read more »

Mini Rant: The Coming Out Novel and Queer Characters in YA Lit
Malinda Lo’s latest blog Coming Out 2.0 makes me think of the larger conversation surrounding “coming out” stories and queer characters in YA novels–a convo that’s been going on for…well, a while now. Mainly, it has to do with the evolution of the LGBT young adult story: this need to move away from storytelling focused read more »

Writing: The Summer is Full of Good Stuff
This summer is a literary summer for me. First off, the Writers’ Community of Durham Region is having its Annual General Meeting in June, which is where the board of directors goes through a little switcheroo. We commit to one two-year term, which means some of us are stepping down, and some new board members read more »

Life: An Update on The Plan
Well, I did it. I stopped watching TV. Well, not completely because it’s almost impossible to be around people without also being around a television. But in the 3 weeks since my last blog post, I’ve actively watched something on TV for an estimated total of 3-4 hours. There was the one Saturday night I read more »

Life: The Plan
No blogging in a while. Blogging, unfortunately, is a chore. I’m not sure if it’s a chore for everybody, but it certainly is a chore for me. The reason being that everyone and their dog has a blog. Plus legitimate “bloggers” actually seem to enjoy it. It’s a habit they’re happy to put effort into. read more »
