Balancing the ideal and the real in business

As entrepreneurs, you and I are the visionaries of our organizations — the creators of the dream and the energy and spirit behind its fulfillment. As operators of the businesses we’ve created, we are the steady hand, the voice of reason, the challenge master and the bull’s eye where the proverbial buck stops.

"Create. Operate. Have fun."

The great French writer, Victor Hugo could have been talking about us when he wrote, “The human soul has still greater need of the ideal than the real. It is b...

In the new Age the Force is with the customer

It’s the Age of the Customer, is your small business ready?

—Earth, Stardate 8507 (The Age of the Seller)

Once upon a time, in a galaxy that today must seem far, far away, sellers controlled all information about their products, services and innovations. Consequently, customers learned what they needed to know from salespeople, who traveled far and wide dispensing information to, and collecting sales from, grateful and beholden customers.

If one had observed such a meeting, the customer would ha...

The irony of politic scandals at critical mass

In our poll last week we asked, “Should Congress pursue Select Committee investigations into the Benghazi attacks and the IRS handling of conservative non-profits?”

Almost 8 of 10 of our audience responded that more investigating is needed to see whether the handling of these two events was politically motivated or just bad judgment and poor management. But while these two controversies, plus the Fast and Furious gun scandal, the Justice Dept. snooping on AP reporters, and the dysfunction and...

Remember America’s militia this Memorial Day

Reasonable people disagree on the origins of Memorial Day, but most accept that the practice of decorating the graves of Americans who died in military service began in earnest during the Civil War.

Logan, Commander of the Army of the Republic, made Memorial Day official with General Order No. 11, which stated in part, “… the 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in d...

Until Next Time: “Just get out of our way!”

Over the past several years, a lot of people have had their hands out for help from the government; from GM, Chrysler, and AIG, to all of the big banks. Then there are the unions that rely on government defense for their very existence. Big corporations make billions of profits doing business with the government. And the number of Americans accepting financial welfare-type support from the government is at an all-time high.

But there is another group of folks out there that is about half the n...

Success is not measured only by money and stuff

Believe it or not, much of the potential for success in your small business depends upon two things:

1. Your ability to effectively function physically, mentally, and emotionally.

2. How well you balance where the business stops and your personal life starts.

There actually are times when being one with your business is not only a good thing, it’s essential. But extreme commitment weaves a fine seam between business and owner. And unfortunately, entrepreneurial single-mindedness will often resu...
