The Strong Female Character
I had to reblog this because I’m absolutely loving this series! And I also believe in the strong female character. . .

I recently started watching the new TV series Outlander, based on the popular books by Diana Gabaldon. I have never read the books. The series sounded like something I might enjoy, about a woman who time-travels to 18th Century Scotland.
After watching two episodes, I’m already done with it.
I see people raving about the show on Twitter and other social media. Like Charlie Brown, I don’t know how to argue with success. Something is resonating with many viewers, and I don’t mind that they are enjoying it.
But to me it’s a major disappointment. It made me think of how the term “strong female character” is so often misconstrued.

Robin Williams, the gregarious American actor who delighted audiences in films from Dead Poets Society to Good Will Hunting, was found dead today in his home outside San Francisco. He was 63. The police called his death a suspected suicide (pdf), and his publicist said Williams “had been battling severe depression.”
His long career on the stage and screen can be measured and remembered in many ways, but for now it might suffice to enjoy the actor’s most famous or otherwise evocative scenes. Here they are in chronological order.

How to Be a Writer in the Year 2014

Lists are cool. Lists are in. Lists are super easy to digest, and take very little of a potential reader’s effort, thought, or time. Throw a few funny gifs in there, and ignore the sinking feeling in your stomach when you realize gifs will eventually replace even the measly word count you’ve been assigned.
2. Be famous for something else.
So, you wanted to write a novel or, god forbid, a short story collection? Who do you think you are—James Franco? Because unless you are literally James Franco, no one cares about your short stories. You better start filming those reality TV audition tapes, or pray to whatever higher power you believe in that your arm is bitten off by a shark.
3. Build your network.
For your sake, I hope you have a famous godfather in the entertainment industry, because if not you will repeat…

“I want you so badly. You’re on my mind every second of every day. I know you want to take things slowly but I have to have you now.” He nibbles down my legs and I’m in pure ecstasy.
“You can have whatever you want, Brandon. I’m yours.” I say barely mumbling the words out. “Take me Brandon, I’m yours.
“Fuck, don’t say stuff like that to me. It’s so fucking hot.”
“Take me, Brandon. You have no idea how long I’ve waited for you.” Wait what? Did I just say that shit to him?
“What do you mean?” he says, huffing as his lips make their way down to my breasts. The anticipation of his lips is setting my insides on fire.
“Look at me for a sec,” I say, lifting his head from my body. I miss him already. “I saw you, Brandon, in a store when we were kids. I never forgot your eyes for one second. You were with, I’m guessing, your mom and you looked at me like you’d known me for years. Like you peered into my soul and I never forgot you. I’ve been waiting for you ever since, and now, here you are.”
“Fuck, were you dressed in some little weird black dress and a white bonnet thing on?” He asks.
“Yeah, that was me.” Shit, I don’t want to get into this tonight.
“I remember you now. I knew I knew you. I remember wondering why you had on that weird dress. I hadn’t seen anything like that. My mom slapped my hand for staring at you for so long. I remember your hazel eyes, Are’. I never forgot them either. Come here, please.” I throw my arms around him and kiss him deep and hard. My tongue makes circles in his mouth and he moans, lighting a fire beneath me. “Hold on, baby. I have some blankets in the car we can use. I want to feel only you and not the sand.” As soon as Brandon lets me go, I immediately miss his warmth. He jogs over to the truck and comes back with three blankets. This is going to be a night that I’ll never forget.
