CAT CONUNDRUM COVER REVEAL, PHASE 1

What’s new?

There is a new Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mystery on the near horizon. I don’t yet have a publishing date, but I am aiming for October 29, 2020, National Cat Day. For the past several years, I have released a CCL mystery on this date. It’s a tradition I will try to uphold, barring asteroid strikes, alien invasions, or any other weirdness 2020 sees fit to throw at us. Meanwhile, we have a cover to reveal!

Cat Conundrum, 7th in the series, takes our hero Lynley Cannon out to the wild Washington Coast where she is confronted with a series of murders so cunning, even she cannot guess the true nature of the crimes. Not only do the victims have nothing in common; the murders themselves are committed in different fashions. The only detail they share is that the murder room is always locked from the inside. Quite a conundrum, don’t you think?

Oh, and yes, there is a cat.

Here is the first peek at the Cat Conundrum cover. Those of you who know me can guess two things without even seeing it: the artwork will be done by cat artist Leslie Cobb; and it will picture a cat. Can you guess the rest? Go to Leslie’s website and look at her beautiful work.

Contest!

To celebrate the coming of Cat Conundrum, I’m giving away a unique cat item, a Cat Lady License Plate Frame.

For a chance to win, email me at molliehuntcatwriter@gmail.com and put Contest, License Plate Frame in the subject line. Tyler the cat will choose the winner at random from the entries received. Please, only those with addresses in the USA can enter because of postage constraints.

Stay Tuned…

I had fun scribbling in my Paint program. I’m not very good at it yet, but at least it’s colorful, don’t you think? Watch for more hints about the coming Cat Conundrum cover!

SURPRISE! 2 BOOK AWARDS FROM THE CAT WRITERS ASSOCIATION

Any other year, members of the international Cat Writer’s Association would converge on a US city to share a weekend of cats and cat writing. After swag bags, presentations, and a gala dinner, we would congregate for the awards ceremony. Winners would be called to the stage to receive their Muse Medallions and special awards. They might even be greeted by a cat!

Not this year. In 2020, the world works online, and the CWA annual awards ceremony was no different. The organizers did an amazing job, and though our comments and congratulations were typed into a chat bar, the excitement was tangible throughout.

I had entered 5 pieces in this year’s CWA Communications Contest, 2 poems and 3 books. I won Certificates of Excellence for 4. These then went on to compete for the ultimate award in each category, the Muse Medallion. The COE is an accomplishment in itself, but to win a Muse for one’s work is nothing short of amazing.

I won two!

I wasn’t surprised when Cat Summer won in the Book, Sci-fi/Fantasy category since mine was the only entry to make it to that point, but when Cosmic Cat won the Book, Mystery category as well, I was taken completely by surprise. As you can imagine, the competition in Mysteries is intense, with many big name writers, including some of my own favorites. For Cosmic Cat to be chosen from that amazing list was a dream come true.

I don’t write with the expectation that my books will win awards, but it’s exciting when it happens. As with most writers, I want people to like my books, and an award is a little piece of tangible proof that someone does.

Big purring thanks to the Cat Writer’s Association and their judges who took the time to read all the books. Thanks to my editor Rosalyn Newhouse, without whom those books never would have happened. Special thanks to cat artist Leslie Cobb’s whose beautiful artwork has made the covers of the Crazy Cat Lady mysteries unique since book one. Thanks to Fire Star Press who published Cat Summer. Thanks to my beta reader and beloved sister in law Jepi, and to all those who helped with research. (Yes, fiction requires learning about everything from fire arms to particle physics!) Thanks to my readers and dedicated fans. I appreciate you so!

I don’t have an online store (yet!) but if anyone would like a signed copy of Cosmic Cat or Cat Summer with the beautiful Muse Award badge on the cover, email me and I’d be more than happy to send you one. Books are $15 each and shipping is free. (Paypal, U.S. address only) MollieHuntCatWriter@gmail.com

Thanks again! Read books! Love cats!

MEMORY MAKERS, a New Thriller by DEBBIE DE LOUISE

I’m excited to announce a new thriller by prolific fiction writer (and fellow member of the Cat Writers Association) Debbie De Louise.
[image error] [image error]

Twenty-five years ago, Lauren Phelps and her sister Patty were kidnapped from their backyard on Long Island. Lauren escaped her captor, but Patty was killed.

Ever since, Lauren has suffered from nightmares of the “Shadow Man.” Trying to recall his face and avenge her sister’s murder, Lauren, now a kidnapping investigator, enrolls in a clinical trial for a new memory drug.

At the offices of Memory Makers in California, she receives the injections of the Memory Makers’ serum, and begins to experience flashbacks of repressed memories. Along with the flashbacks, she receives threats from an anonymous source that point back to her childhood trauma.

Soon, Lauren becomes involved with a fellow trial participant who seeks to recall his own traumatic past. But can Lauren discover the identity of the “Shadow Man” before history repeats itself?

EXCERPT (In this scene, Lauren has taken a weekend leave from the clinical trial to go home to look for her missing cat, Harry. She is aided by, Rick, her kidnapping investigator partner.)

I sat down on the couch next to him. “Coffee looks like the last thing you need. Are you sure you’re up to looking for Harry?”

He pressed his thumbs together in a familiar gesture I recognized as nervous energy and tapped his loafered feet on my mother’s carpet. “I have to keep going, Lauren. It’s the only way. Corey’s been gone nearly two weeks. Chances are we won’t find him alive. Helping you out with your cat is a reprieve for me. I’ll sleep later when there’s time.”

“I’m sorry I left you with everything. It’s a lot for one person to deal with.”

“I’ve had some help.”

I thought of mother’s words about his replacing me with another pretty detective. “Who?” I asked.

“John from vice. He’s been aching to get out of that department for a change.”

“Ah,” I couldn’t help the relief sounding in my voice. “Has he come up with anything?”

Rick spread his hands. The thumb twiddling stopped a moment. “Nada. No kidnap note or call. Whoever took Corey had another reason.”

Like me and Patty’s abductor. “You’ll find him,” I said, although I wasn’t too confident about that.

“In a ditch, most likely.” I saw the pain fill his eyes.

“You have to think positive. It’s the only way you’ll cope with this.”

He nodded. “I know.” His voice sounded hollow, the furthest thing from optimism.

Mother arrived with a tray containing coffee and an assortment of home-baked muffins she hadn’t offered me.

“Help yourself. You could use some fattening up.” She placed the tray next to him.

Rick didn’t argue but took a blueberry muffin along with a coffee mug. “Thank you.”

Mother smiled. “You’re quite welcome. Are you going to help Lauren find her cat?”

He bit into his muffin and took a sip of coffee. After he swallowed, he replied. “Yes. I hope to do that. Can you tell me the last place you saw him?”

I recognized that question from those we routinely asked the parents of missing kids.

Mother took a seat next to me and leaned over. I felt like I was in the middle of their conversation. “I came home from shopping. It was Thursday. I always shop for groceries on Thursdays. I usually tap the door when I come in to scare off the cats who gather near it. They always seem to know when I’m on the doorstep.” She wiped back a strand of gray hair that had fallen across her forehead. “Harry and Hermione were both standing there. I could hardly see over my packages, but I scooted them away with my foot. Hermione ran back, but Harry got around me. I put my groceries down and ran after him, but he disappeared.”

“In what direction did he go?”

“He crossed the street. I thank God no cars were coming. I thought he went into a bush in front of the Carson’s house.” She paused. “The Carsons are my neighbors, across the street an elderly man and woman whose grandkids come regularly to mow their lawn or do upkeep on their house.”

“Did you actually see him go in the bush?”

“Yes, but he never came out. I was afraid to go on their lawn. I hate to trespass on other people’s property. I rang the bell, but no one answered. Phyllis is hard of hearing, but Bert’s ears are still sharp as a tack. The blinds were closed, so I assumed they went out. I called Harry’s name, but he didn’t reply. I waited there a while, but he never reappeared.”

“Did you go into the bush?”

Mother seemed offended. “No. I told you I felt uncomfortable trespassing. I gave up and went home. I figured maybe he would come out on his own. Cats are like that. I kept looking for him through the window, but there was no sign. The next morning, the Carsons let me check their bushes, but Harry was long gone.” She sniffled as if the recounting had saddened her and then continued the story. “I asked around the neighborhood. I even had one of the kids down the block make up signs and put them on street poles. The signs had my number and a photo of Harry that Petey helped me get off my iPhone.” Petey was as knowledgeable about computers as most young people are today.

“Did you have any responses?” Rick prompted.

Mother shook her head. “None. That’s why I called Lauren.” She looked in my direction. “I thought Harry would come to her if she went looking for him.”

“That’s possible. We’ll take a walk around the neighborhood. He could be hiding somewhere.”

“He’s never been outside,” Mother added. “Thank you for helping. It means a lot to us.” She glanced again at me with a sly smile that hinted that what she was thankful for was Rick spending time with me.

COVID-BRAIN

Nothing is getting easier. No end in sight. You’d think with all this down time, creativity would abound, but for many of us, the opposite is true. A friend referred to this flatlining of activity as COVID-BRAIN, and I’ve got it for sure.
Are you feeling strange? A slump in energy? A change in writing habits? An excess of anxiety? Do you spend an inordinate amount of time on the couch watching movies? Maybe even old television series you would not have bothered with before this grand isolation came about? Do you eat at odd hours, wake during the nightRead the rest of my recent post on the Fire Star Press blogsite.https://firestarpress.blogspot.com/2020/07/covid-brain-by-mollie-hunt-cat-writer.html

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! but Please Respect Pets and People too!

Cats and other sensitive beings may be terrified of the sound of fireworks.

Tip: Let your cat find the place in the house where they feel most comfortable, possibly under a bed or in a closet. Allow them to stay there until the noise is over. Though you want to comfort them, it’s best to leave them alone. They know what they need.

Tip: Ask your vet what calming aids they would reccommend to help your cat.

This is how I feel when those boomies go off. If I feel this way, imagine how your pet with their sentsitive ears must feel!

More cats (and dogs) go missing on the Fourth of July holiday than any other time of the year. Keep kitty inside, and make sure windows and doors are closed so there is no way for your cat to sneak out.

Not all cats are sensitive to noises. Our Dirty Harry would sleep through all of it, and our Tinkerbelle liked to sit in the window and watch!

Have a wonderful holiday. Stay safe. Social distance. Wear masks. Be kind.

CELEBRATING SUMMER WITH A BIG BOOK SALE

Are you ready for some GOOD news? I have reduced the price of all my ebooks! All Kindle versions of my books are now $2.99 or less on Amazon*.

There are many reasons why I decided to make this change. Firstly, I think we could use a good, optimistic read in our lives. Some of us are still isolating and will be for the near future. Though we are slowly learning how to safely come out of our shells, things are different now. Thankfully reading will always be there for us.

Many folks, including myself, have taken a financial hit because of the pandemic. I’m hoping that by reducing my prices, I can make my books more affordable. And of course if I sell more books, that’s good for me too.

Last but not least, I’m working up to the publication of the next in the Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mystery series, Cat Conundrum. This 7th instalment takes us to the coast where Lynley and Special Agent Denny Paris work side by side with the local constabulary to catch a serial killer who is committing complex and bazaar locked-room murders. I don’t have a publish date yet but stay tuned. You will know when I do.

The ebook sale will continue throughout the summer.

Sale books include the entire Crazy Cat Lady Series, featuring Lynley Cannon, a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip:

Cats’ Eyes, Crazy Cat Lady cozy mystery #1:

Look what the cat dragged in! When Lynley’s old kitty Fluffo discovers a stolen uncut diamond, Lynley finds herself accused of murdering the thieves.

Copy Cats, #2:

When Lynley exposes a breed cat counterfeiting ring, she becomes the target of a serial killer who murders with a grisly cat-like claw.

Cat’s Paw, #3:

Two suspicious deaths at an elite art retreat send Lynley running back to Portland, but murder follows in her wake.

Cat Call, #4:

Lynley takes over as cat handler for a TV pilot only to find the show is hexed and murder is waiting in the wings.

Cat Café, #5: (Winner of the World’s Best Litter-ary Award, 2019)

A body is discovered on the floor of the cat café, and all the black cats are missing!

Cosmic Cat, #6: (CWA 2020 Certificate of Excellence Recipient)

When a superhero cosplayer falls to his death at a comic con, Lynley is left holding the bag— and a cat!

Books need not be read in order. While highlighting the characters we know and love, I try to change up the subject matter with each story, so pick whichever strikes your fancy.

Learn about cats! Each chapter is headed by a tip, trick, or fact about the wild and wonderful feline species.

Also included in the sale:

Placid River Runs Deep, a haunting mystery.

When Ember Mackay learns she has a life-threatening illness, she flees to the old Placid River cabin for solace, but she finds mystery instead.

*Cat Summer, Book One of the Cat Seasons Sci-Fantasy Tetralogy will remain $3.99, the price set by the publisher.

THE OFFICIAL “CAT WINTER” COVER REVEAL!

I love this cover so much that I couldn’t help giving a few sneak peeks over the last month, but this is it! The real, official, formal, no-more-holding-back COVER REVEAL for the next in the Cat Seasons Sci-Fantasy Tetralogy, CAT WINTER!

Cat Winter is the second book in the tetralogy, with Cat Autumn and Cat Spring yet to come. Each book follows a new clowder of sentient cats as they work to save the world from dangers untold. In Cat Summer, (2019 Fire Star Press) an ancient evil sent humanity to the brink of annihilation, but when our cat heroes vanquished that foe, an insidious inertia took hold, presenting the cats another hurdle to overcome. Cat Winter takes us on a new journey with a new set of characters. In the dark matter of space, a powerful anomaly has come into being, its single purpose: to devour the cosmos. Little does Claire know that the outcome balances on the small, black shoulders of her cat, Slayter.

Here is the back cover text:

Nine were chosen.

The task? Slip beyond time and help put right humanity’s wrongs.

Slayter, the obsidian feline, is one of the selected few.

But something has gone wrong. Humans are dying in mysterious ways that should not be possible in time-stall. In the dark matter of space, a powerful anomaly has come into being. It’s single purpose, to devour the cosmos.

Magical transformations, daring rescues, a journey through time and space. Will Slayter and his companions succeed in defeating the malevolence before the universe is gone forever?

When I told my cover designer Roslyn McFarland about the Cat Winter story and described what I had in mind, she came up with this design in no time flat. A little tweaking, and it is exactly what I envisioned! There is my hero Slayter, front and center, with his tabby fur-sister Emma and the ancient Siamese matriarch T’Paw to either side. There are the crystalline trees of time-stall. There are the stars in the winter sky, rising into the universe where the black hole anomaly dwells. It’s all present and beautifully done.

TA-DA!

Cat Winter in now in the last round of edits, so I will be choosing a publishing date soon. Should a story that begins in winter be released in winter? Or would summer be better, to cool you off with a snowy tale?

Cover artist Roslyn McFarland is a fellow member of NIWA (Northwest Independent Writers’ Association). She designs cover art for members and others.

COMING: THREE BOOKS, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER

Some say it’s not really a book until it has a cover, but I don’t believe that’s true. It’s a book the moment it springs from a writer’s crazy thought process. It’s a book as they surge through the first draft, lumber around the second, trudge into the third and agonize over the fourth. Still, there is something definitive about a cover. It marks a birth, a coming of age. Even if the book isn’t finished, a beautiful cover is a milestone for any story.

I have three books currently in the works. Two have covers already, so yay! One, I’m just now wrapping the first draft. Its cover will be a beach house, a garden, and a ghost cat, but not for a while. Let me tell you about it anyway.

The Seaville Ghost Cat, first in a new series tentatively called the Tenth Life Cozy Mysteries.

Septuagenarian Camelia Collins has finally fulfilled her lifelong dream of moving to the coast, but when she learns her perfect little home is a murder house, that dream becomes a nightmare. Three years ago, reclusive businessman Jonathan Chambers was brutally killed on the stoop. The killer is still at large, the trail gone cold until Camelia discovers the victim’s flash drive in her fireplace hearth. This new evidence has nothing to do with her, and the police assure her she’s safe, but she learns differently from another, stranger source.

In Camelia’s back garden is a gravestone etched with the words, “Beloved Soji, Into Your Tenth Life.” The legend of the ghost cat is infamous in Seaville, but what few know is that Soji is real. Born the seventh kitten of a seventh kitten over a century ago, Soji returns, determined to solve the mystery. Will she be in time, or has she set herself up for death twice over?

I’m still working on the blurb, but you get the idea.

Then there’s Cat Winter, Book Two of the Cat Seasons Sci-fantasy Tetralogy. Cat Winter is now in the final stages of editing. It has a cover, beautifully designed by Roslyn McFarland! There will be an official cover reveal soon, so stay tuned.

This branch of the Cat Seasons tree takes a new clowder of cats on the adventure of a lifetime, or of nine lifetimes, if you happen to be a cat. Here is the official back-cover blurb:

Nine were chosen.

The task? Slip beyond time and help put right humanity’s wrongs.

Slayter, the obsidian feline, is one of the selected few.

But something has gone wrong. Humans are dying in mysterious ways that should not be possible in time-stall. In the dark matter of space, a powerful anomaly has come into being. It’s single purpose, to devour the cosmos.

Magical transformations, daring rescues, a journey through time and space. Will Slayter and his companions succeed in defeating the malevolence before the universe is gone forever?

And then there is the next installment of the Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mystery Series (#7), Cat Conundrum. Its cover incorporates yet another original painting by cat artist Leslie Cobb.

A locked room. A dead man. The cat is the only witness, and he isn’t talking.

A series of locked-room murders in sleepy little Long Beach, Washington has Sheriff Boulder running in circles. As to the killer, he has no idea who, how, or why. He calls in the aid of his friend, animal cop Denny Paris, and sixty-something cat shelter volunteer Lynley Cannon comes along for the ride. The officers investigate one line of inquiry, while Lynley and her buddy Frannie take a different approach. The only clues are a cat found at the murder scene and a rich man’s missing wife, but thread by thread, they unravel a scheme more insidious than a novel by Agatha Christie.

Cat Conundrum is also with the editor for its touch up and polish. Traditionally I’ve launched the books in this series at Another Read Through bookstore, but not this year. Even before Covid cancelled the world as we know it, ART had to give up their physical location on Mississippi Avenue. So who knows? Maybe a virtual launch. Maybe a pop-up. But there’s lots of work to be done before then.

Is your curiosity peaked? Do you have any thoughts about a launch party? Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted every step of the way. After all, without you, I wouldn’t need to make and covers at all, and what fun would that be?
