249 - Budgets, Letters and Travels
Note to Perisalas Shefenkas: Please be aware that recent requisitions have been deferred to next year's budget. I did not think I was that close to the line. Note to Matthas Tathen re budget: Please find enclosed a revised budget request. – and with a personal note attached. "I was close behind him, I just need a few more chains if you could see to pulling them out of petty cash for me,

248 - Ailadas is Truth Drugged
Perisalas rocked back and forth on his heels, in the Road Office, ignoring the usual noises drifting in from the Serenity Hall, staring down at the the neatly filled out road Sereniteer's report. The former Mirror had been truthful and reasonably accurate in her description of the Heir in Exile's group. If he were given to such displays he might have knocked his head against the nearest wall

247 - Questioning by Authorities and Socks
I sat in my mother's solar, working on my tapestry, of a couple in a green meadow dancing a falisas. The reader, in the corner, was in the middle of an article in the Pages about how the Imperator would stay on long enough to hand power over to his sister, since the vote had gone against him. Mama had refused to vote, but I had gone with a friend. We had had our brothers as escorts to vote at

246 - A Yeoli Lesson
I tilted my head back and watch Gannara scramble in the rigging of the ship, a smile on his face fit to split his head. We'd made it to Fispur, walking, and had found a Yeoli ship sailing first to Tor Ench and then on to Selina. We had been very lucky, catching the ship in port. There was no truly regular schedule for ships to come in, it depended so on weather and the vagaries of wind.

245 - Dreams and Almost five-year-olds
"Minis. Where are you? Minis!" Someone is calling me, looking for me. I know that. The Imperium is looking for me. 2nd Amitzas is looking for me. I'm looking for me. Who I am now I don't know. "Minis." The voices are far away but they are persistent. More than one. Men and women both. Who would be looking for me? Who would want me? I don't even want me, really. A millwheel

244 - Birth Certificates, Chainkeepers and Voting
I went across to Hot Metal, which was close enough for me to order an evening meal for us all, so no one would have to eat any of my cooking. I'd found that if I struck across the park up the street from us, went behind the apothecaries' row and Cooper's, and past the courier's stables and yard, just by the real entrance of the Pages, any food I'd ordered hot, would still be hot by the time I

243 - Pish Pish-Napping
Even on my knees I could feel the hot, malodorous, slow panting on my face as I stared up into the unfriendly maw of the Great Hound. It still wasn't making a sound while the little dog yipped and squealed and practically turned itself inside out. "Um…Gannara," I repeated intelligently. He was just in front of me, kneeling next to a the beginning of a hedge. Thank Celestialis that there

242 - Frustrations Expressed
Caution: Mahid Attitudes Articulated. Graphic Violence. Soul Violence._______________________________________________ 2nd Amitzas tugged his collar perfectly straight. It was so satisfying. So… elegant. He was feeling good enough to almost smile. He stepped out of the tent and walked over to the naked prisoner suspended from a tree by both wrists. The pale skin of his back showed three old

241 - Settling
The emerald was worth more than I thought and the clerk gave me change and a receipt. It was good that I had more silver chains and several gold rather than the gem. I wouldn't have to risk changing it, out city. Gannara was sitting in the window, reading, when I got back to the inn. Kaita had settled Ili for a nap in the room next door and Ailadas was still out. "Hey there." "I
