6 Ways to Help You Become a Confident Author

1. Be AuthenticThere’s only one you. You’re it. Be yourself and your readers will respond to that. Own it!
2. Do Everything with PurposeWhatever you do in this author biz, make sure you’re playing the long game. Each thing is a brick in the mega mansion that is your career later on down the road. You’re building a foundation, so make it strong.
3. Don’t Hesitate Too LongYou snooze, you lose. You think long, you think wrong. You’ve heard those sayings and they’re true. When you overthink and overanalyze, sometimes you miss opportunities.
4. Pivot & RunIf something’s not working for you, then it’s time to pivot and run. But, if it IS working for you, run toward it. This author gig means moving around a lot and going with a flow that works for you. Be perceptive and make those changes as you go along.
5. Research What You Don’t Know (Wing the Rest)Learning is key! As self-published authors, we often have to figure everything out as we go. That’s part of the fun! Spoken like a true nerd ha! And, what you can’t figure out, you can wing.
6. Don’t Be Afraid To Try New ThingsNew apps, websites, anthologies, newsletter swaps, and on and on. No matter what it is, don’t be afraid to try new things when it comes to your author biz. Sometimes these things are a flop, but often, they turn out to be awesome. Just give it a go!

What You Gain When Your Book Flops
New episode, new amazing content on the Open Book Besties podcast! This week, me and my cohost, Misty Walker, came up with a topic we really wanted to discuss: what you gain when your book flops. I know, I know…it sounds fishy, but trust me, we have some information that will brighten your outlook and give you the little push to keep going!
Not Finding Monetary Success…But Still Finding A Silver LiningEvery author and I do mean every author has felt like one of their book releases was a flop, or at the very least, didn’t meet their expectations. Many things could have been a factor in this, most of those outside of our control. However, just because the book didn’t explode like you anticipated or made you a ton of money, it doesn’t mean it was a complete failure. Furthermore, it doesn’t mean it won’t make you money at a later date. Let’s unpack this topic, shall we

In the podcast, we dive into exactly what this means, but I’ll give you the gist of it. When I published my very first book, Broken, I went in with no readers. I did, though, find a reader named Elizabeth. She loved my first book and gushed over the hero, Jackson. Then, guess what? She showed up for the next book and the next book and the next book… Fast forward eight years later and Elizabeth beta reads for me. She’s also read EVERY SINGLE THING I’ve written. So, maybe that first book release didn’t make a ton of money, but I gained a reader for life, and that’s invaluable.
2) Practicing Your CraftWith every book you publish, you’re practicing your craft. You’re going through edits, rereading, and polishing your manuscripts. Just like the kid who wants to get better at free throws (and practices day in and day out), you’re getting better too with each book release. Your sales might be less than stellar on your book launch, but that’s okay because you’re fine-tuning your craft. It’s not all for naught. We dig into this in depth, so make sure you have a listen to the podcast!
3) Testing What Works (And Doesn’t)The great thing about self-publishing is that you can easily test what works and what doesn’t. If something isn’t working for you, you can pivot and change directions at the drop of a hat. In our podcast, we discuss how what works for me doesn’t necessarily work for Misty and vice versa. It’s that way for all authors. We all bring our different strengths to the table and need to build from that. And when your book tanks, maybe it’s time to test something new. Your book is essentially like an annuity and will continue to pay out long past the release date. I’ve had books that are eight years old suddenly make me money by highlighting them on my newsletter.
4) Developing Your BrandThis is such an incredible part of the process. As you release books, you’re developing your brand. We discuss, in the podcast, that who we set out to be (our brand) has completely changed. Misty reflects back to how she didn’t think she’d be known as the motorcycle club romance writer, but she evolved into that. Her brand, specifically on TikTok, has evolved as she releases books and is dependent on what people respond to. It’s all part of the process. Your book made pennies and that sucks, right? But maybe this is your second alien romance book and you have two or three “Elizabeths” who are stoked for the third alien romance book. Maybe you’re becoming known as the alien romance writer who’s obsessed with all things sci-fi. Whatever your thing is, it will develop as you release these books and pivot as necessary. This factors into the next topic: doing what you love.
5) Finding What Brings You Joy and Doing What You LoveAs you publish books, you’re finding out what you love…and don’t. I love trying new tropes and subgenres. Sometimes I really love writing those things. For instance, when I started writing MM romance, I couldn’t believe how much I loved it. But, I’ve also dabbled in other stuff, like historical romance, which was fun for a few books, but I didn’t necessarily want to write twenty books in that genre. The main takeaway here is that by writing and releasing, you’re navigating through what makes you happy and eliminating what doesn’t.
6) Discover Your NicheWe touched on your brand up above and this one sort of goes hand in hand with that one. Your niche is basically your specialty. It goes beyond your online personality and what really defines your writing. Misty spoke on how she writes easy, light motorcycle club romances. The writing and love is sexy, romantic, but then she can hammer you with the grit and darkness. It’s kind of her specialty. For me, my niche would probably be forbidden age-gap themes. I thread them into every book just about and it’s kind of a big chunk of who I am as a writer. I’ve only learned this by developing my brand and finding what makes me happy to write. You’ll discover this too, don’t worry!
7) Making Connections and NetworkingBeing an author is so much more than writing and publishing a book. It’s a business. And, like in any business, you must make connections and network. In the podcast, we peel back all the layers of this topic. We discuss the proper etiquette for making new relationships in the book world that are authentic. Authenticity is key. You want to create relationships where you give rather than take. So often, people hop into your inbox upon you accepting their friend request and immediately ask you do to something for them. Don’t be that person. Instead, build a lasting relationship where the person you’re wanting to connect with will want to help you without even being asked. This section of the podcast is incredibly important and loaded with valuable information to help you connect in a more meaningful way.

7 Ways to Increase Sales…Without Spending Money!
This week, a few days after our one year podcasting anniversary on the Open Book Besties podcast, we announced our efforts to provide more helpful resources for authors, since that appears to be a large share of our listeners. Me and my cohost, Misty Walker, put our heads together to come up with a helpful topic every author wants to know more of:
How do I increase my book sales without spending money?We get it. We totally do. Marketing your books can get quite costly. When you’ve already spent money for cover design, editing, formatting, etc, it’s almost painful to shell out even more money to then get your finished products into the hands of readers. Many professionals out there tout the way to successfully market your books is through CPC ads via AMS or Facebook, or even rolling the dice to get a much coveted BookBub deal. And while that’s all great and wonderful, there are other ways that don’t cost anything but time and a little grit.
I know, I know. social media sounds like a given, and it’s not necessarily what you want to hear, but it is a fantastic way to reach new readers, build relationships with current readers, and to ask the reader for the sale in various ways. Social media is important in building your brand. By regularly engaging in groups, making posts, and answering reader questions or comments, you’re keeping the shiny object (you and your books!) front and center. In the podcast, we dig into the power of TikTok and some examples/experiences to support this. Remember, posting and interacting on social media is free but yields fantastic returns making it incredibly powerful in achieving more sales.
2) Stepping Up NewsletterNewsletters are an invaluable tool that I only started taking advantage of in the past year or so. In the podcast, we discuss what’s worked and provide some in depth discussion regarding newsletters and ways to improve them. A quick rundown would be: be personable (because readers really enjoy seeing the real you!), tell stories, be consistent, book spotlights, create automations, and more. I’ll explain how my sales began to jump each month when I started doing consistent book spotlights, so make sure you have a listen to the podcast!
3) Approach BloggersAnother impactful way to increase sales without spending money is to approach bloggers individually. No, we’re not talking about a copy and paste message into every blogger’s inbox from a massive spreadsheet you created. We’re talking a little bit of research here on your part that will set you up for better success and won’t get you ignored or shot down. Misty discusses the right way to go about this without sounding salesy or desperate. We also dig in a little more into building relationships with your “network” as that’ll be a key component in the foundation of your entire author business. It’s not about what they can do for you and you only. This is a two way street, as with any successful relationship, and will require some give and take.
4) Write a Reader MagnetThis particular tip has been incredibly successful for me. Often, I get asked to write a short story for a blog or a project. I might even get asked to write a novella for an anthology. Eventually, those stories are returned back to me to do with what I choose. I’ve made the good majority of them for free on my website (but nowhere else). This drives traffic to my website (where I hope they’ll snoop around and check out other things I have like signed paperbacks) and it also gives me the opportunity to ask them to join my newsletter. Once the book has been downloaded (and hopefully they read it), at the end of the book, I send them to what they need to read next. I try to be strategic in where I want them to go, usually funneling the reader into a book that isn’t free. In the podcast, not only do we discuss this in great detail, but we also have suggestions for authors just starting out or authors who don’t have such magnets in their arsenal…yet.
5) Newsletter SwapsIn this portion, Misty discusses what newsletter swaps are, how to go about doing one, and tips on who and how to align yourself in the most beneficial way. Sure, you’d love to swap newsletter spots with EL James or some other superstar, but it doesn’t really make sense if you’re over here writing sweet, small town Hallmark romances. It’s going to be a better fit if you can find other sweet, small town Hallmark romance authors because their readers are already eager for these types of reads, which, in turn, will be most often more of a success for you then simply chasing after “big fish” with huge subscriber lists. Quality over quantity really is key here.
6) Fresh ContentYou’ve probably already exhausted your budget on teasers, covers, and graphics, so you’re wondering what other content you could offer that’s fresh. If you can’t make your own teasers or graphics and feel like your photography is something to be desired, it’s okay. There are still ways to come up with fresh content. Your readers like seeing sneak peeks into anything you’ll give them whether that be your work in progress, books that have just arrived, your workspace, you, etc. The sky’s the limit. No need to be a professional photographer here. It can be as simple as screenshotting a highlighted juicy part of your book on your kindle (blacking out the bad words for added mystery) and posting on your socials. It could be as simple as a selfie with your book in hand. Heck, take a picture of your book in the grass, beside your coffee, stuffed between Mom’s bibles on her bookcase. It’s really that simple. I suggest downloading a simple app like Snapseed to help you brighten your photos with ease to give them a finishing touch. In the episode, we give lots of examples of fresh, easy content ideas.
7) Be Consistent and ScheduleThis one is incredibly important and essentially ties into all of the above. When doing all of these things, you’re going to want to make sure it’s not a one and done situation. Put it in your calendar. Make it a habit. Of course, no one wants you spamming them with YOU-YOU-YOU-YOU, but they do want to see you, read updates, and learn new stuff. By creating a schedule for yourself, you can organize your thoughts and plan out a plan of action.

5 Spicy Romance Books TikTok Isn’t Talking About…But Should Be!
BookTok, a wildly popular hashtag on TikTok, has more than 52 billion views. 52 billion! As a result, books are getting seen in ways they never have before. For an author like myself, the possibility of having one of my books go viral on TikTok isn’t just a dream, but a reality I’ve had the pleasure of seeing.
Authors, publishers, and bookstores are all becoming keenly aware of the power of TikTok as a marketing tool to get books into the hands of more readers. Stores like the Barnes and Noble near me have picked up on this trend and have even gone as far as to have BookTok tables showcasing popular, viral books that customers can easily find. They even have a whole tab on their website dedicated to BookTok! I’ve been lucky enough to have some stores share videos of my books on their tables which is such a WOW moment for sure.
Whispers and the Roars and The Wild are two of my books that have seen phenomenal success on TikTok. When the videos about those books go viral, it 100% translates into sales both on all the book platforms (ie. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Apple, Google Play, Eden Books, Audible, etc) and my website.

Another book TikTok is sleeping on is Stroke of Midnight. This Cinderella retelling is unlike any other you’ve read. What makes this book spicytok worthy is that it’s filled with degradation and praise kink.
The main couple play daring games where the heroine’s humiliation can be bought for the right price. Our heroine, Ash, or Cinderelliott as our hero, Winston, calls her, may be young, but she’s able to outsmart Winston both inside and outside of the bedroom.
This book has all the steam factors, but the surprisingly wonderful part of this story is the banter. Ash and Winston have the best conversations, most of which will have you laughing, smirking, or overcome with secondhand embarrassment.

The Glue is a steamy, MMF romance by K Webster
The Glue
BookTok loves polyamorous romances. Reverse harems are incredibly popular, but so are the menage tropes (a romance involving three people). That’s why, BookTok needs to wake up and read this fiery-hot romance, The Glue.
The Glue is hot for several reasons. First off, it’s MMF, which means all three of the characters “touch” each other. Often, you’ll see MFM where the guys don’t touch, but in this case, they all three touch interchangeably. Secondly, it’s hot because there is a professor/student trope, a workplace romance, and of course, my favorite, age gaps between the characters.
This book is about a couple, Vaughn and Vale, who are on the brink of divorce. That is, until Aiden enters their lives. Aiden is much younger than the couple, but he brings them together in a way nothing or no one else can. He’s the glue on a marriage that’s falling apart. Along with all the super-hot sex scenes, this book is balanced with a lot of emotional moments. It’s a perfect mix.

The Wild K Webster: From Notorious to Notable
Today marks the four-year anniversary of my most “notorious” book, The Wild. It’s a book that not only took me by surprise, but apparently, the entire book world. We weren’t ready. Not me, not my readers, no one. It caused more than a stir…
The Wild turned my world upside down and gave it a hard, violent shake.
Calm Before the StormI love pushing boundaries. For years now, I’ve allowed my characters to take me on adventures that even surprise me. It’s fun to allow them to run in any direction they so please. I certainly find it entertaining.
In the summer of 2017, I was feeling the itch to write something epic, dark, and juicy. I’d been completely enamored by Selena Kitt’s Temptation. The story was filthy, emotional, taboo, and totally had me biting my nails in anticipation. I loved how she wrote so beautifully on a topic that could literally make you cringe. I wanted more. Problem was, I couldn’t find it. At least, not what I was looking for.
Most authors write the books they want to read. I was no exception. Being that I love all things survival-related, I thought it’d be fun to put that spin on a forbidden romance. To make it feral and wild and lawless.
This book sucked me into its void and for a solid week, I wrote nonstop. Yes, you heard that correctly. I wrote this book in a week. That week, looking back, was a blur. I don’t know that I even spoke to my family or changed my clothes. I was a woman obsessed with the world I was creating.

A Ping on the RadarAfter I wrote The Wild, I sent it to my best friend, Misty, for her to have a read. She gobbled it up and was just as excited as I was about the story. But then, I got my first ping of warning that maybe this book might not be for everyone.
The betas were startled. No, they were completely knocked over and responded with a mixture of “what the f*ck is this but I sort of love it.” I took it as a compliment. Ha! Still, despite the unusual, and not normal reaction, I kept going along my merry little way.
It’s just a book. I’ll put a massive warning on it.
Here was the original warning:
The Wild is an extremely taboo story. Most will find that the themes in this book will make you incredibly uncomfortable or maybe even offend you. This book is only for the brave, the open-minded, and the ones who crave love in even the most dismal of situations. Extreme sexual themes and violence in certain scenes, which could trigger emotional distress, are found in this story. If you are sensitive to heavy taboo themes, then this story is not for you.
Seriously, you’ve been warned.
Don’t say I didn’t try.
You’re probably going to cringe many, many, many times.
Even if you’re on the fence, it’s probably not a good idea to proceed.
However, if you’re intrigued and fearless and kind of sort of trust me, then carry on. This book is for you.
I thought I did my due diligence. Basically I warned them if they’re even a bit unsure, then they probably shouldn’t read it at all.

First the Rain and then the DownpourThe Wild went through the typical book release process that every book goes through. I had it set up through Kindle Unlimited and on a pre-order on Amazon. I’d been thrilled to give my current boundary-pushing-loving readers something…more. At this point, I loved this book so much, I’d read it at least three or four times just for fun. (Any author will tell you we don’t like to read our books for fun, but there I was loving the hell out of this book.)
Advanced reader copies went out, and like with any other new release, I was eaten up by nerves hoping they would like the book.
Some did.
But before I could fully enjoy the excitement of those who did, I was slapped right in the face by the words of those who didn’t. You have to have tough skin to be in this industry and to take criticism, but I wasn’t there yet. I was the girl who wouldn’t read anything less than a glowing five-star review because I didn’t want to get my feelings hurt. I avoided Goodreads like the plague.
I couldn’t avoid this.
Before I knew what was happening, it seemed as though the book world was exploding with buzz about The Wild, a lot of it not good. I did my best to try and ignore that stuff because I was having tons of people gush over the book.

Lightning StruckEvery author wants to be the talk of the town, their book’s title on everyone’s lips. But not like this. In a flash that caught me by complete surprise, suddenly the entire book world was in an uproar about this coming book.
It hadn’t even released yet.
We were just a couple of days from release and people were screaming about this book on every platform.
Like any storm, I was hoping it’d blow over and I’d be yesterday’s news by tomorrow. That didn’t happen. With each passing second, this storm aka my book release was becoming stronger and more violent. I could see it was on a path of destruction…for my career.
At this point, there wasn’t any stopping it. All I could do was batten down the hatches and pray to resurface on the other side unscathed. Boy, was that naive thinking. By the eve before release, my book was being reported viciously to Amazon, social media was in all out war, and I was sick with worry.
What was going to happen?
The simplest thing should have been that my book got blocked/banned for the content, but it didn’t stop there. Lightning struck, caught fire, and The Wild raging buzz was unstoppable. Everything with my name attached to it was in its path and doused in gasoline.

Complete and Utter DestructionDespite the naysayers and vitriol surrounding the pending release of The Wild, my pre-orders were an insanely high amount. But, alternatively, my returns started pouring in just as quickly.
The. Book. Still. Hadn’t. Released. Yet.
Amazon informed me they were blocking the book from sale. This complicated and confused their system. Since the book was in pre-order, it basically was the first thing they had to move out of the way for their system to block my book. They first revoked my pre-order privileges (for an entire year!). Because the book still hadn’t been processed as blocked, people could continue to pre-order. It was a question as to whether or not they’d actually receive it.
The Wild was officially THE talk of our beloved book town.
It was nasty. I’ve never seen so much hatred in our community as I did in August of 2017. Not only aimed at me, which really, really sucked, but at each other. People were definitively on one side or the other. Friends were fighting with each other. I was disgusted.
I did this.
I started this war and didn’t even mean to.
Worse yet, I had no clue how to stop it.
The book eventually went live…for a few hours. It dropped all the way to the top 100 on Amazon because so many people were curious about it. All my dreams were coming true, but somewhere along the way they’d morphed into a nightmare. Sure, I was selling more books on a single day than I’d ever done in my entire career, and was actually ranking on the charts, but I also didn’t know if the readers would actually get to keep the book they purchased or what.
So stressful. Oh my God. I can’t even begin to describe how stressful this was. And it was only the tip of the iceberg.
Within a few hours of the official release of The Wild, the pre-order block fell off and then they actually blocked the book. Luckily, those readers who had purchased it (and not returned it) or borrowed it on Kindle Unlimited had this book on their device. Some of which, already read it in those short few hours. Everyone was worried it would suddenly disappear and they didn’t want to miss out.
Yet, it stayed.
I kept all those sales. Amazon didn’t take them away. Nor did they remove the book. Whew, one bullet dodged. Now what about the rest?

It’s Raining…AgainBecause Amazon was quick to remove my book, I was already onto trying to get the book up on other retailers. Readers were flooding my inbox with the same message: How can I get the book? I was able to direct them to the paperback which was still up on Amazon since The Wild was uploaded through their sister system, Createspace.
Again, the book was charting…this time, the paperback.
But, because people were so fired up about this book, they took to reaching out to the printing company to report the book. Not long after, Createspace also blocked my book. And then all the other retailers followed. I even created an account for Smashwords. At one point, they were the only retailer selling it. That lasted all of about twelve hours before I was blocked there too. They even cancelled my entire author account. (Luckily, after a strongly worded email, I was paid any monies owed and rather quickly.)
I wanted to crawl into a hole and die.
Seriously.
I was stressed to the max, disgusted at the hatred, and slightly terrified of the momentum.
How would it impact my career? Was I finished?
If it weren’t for the hundreds and hundreds of daily messages asking me how they could purchase the book, I’d have thrown in the towel. I was so defeated and overwhelmed. I lost fifteen pounds in the span of a week, my teeth continually chattered from nerves, and I cried all day every day.
My kids were worried. My husband was ready to torch the world to the ground.
I just wanted it to go away. I wanted to hide from it all and pretend it never happened.
But it did happen and there was no hiding.
I like to think of myself as a strong person, but there were days that I could barely get out of bed to face the day. I kept wondering how a person without such a solid network of supportive friends and family and readers would be doing in the face of something so terrible. It was eye-opening because I knew without a shadow of a doubt, it could destroy a person. It was destroying me. (These feelings led me to write The Day She Cried where I channeled all the emotions and bullying into a new adult romance book that was “Amazon safe” just to prove I’m more than just a taboo book writer, but that’s another story for a different day.)

Clouds Began to Roll AwaySomewhere along the way, I managed to set my website up (thanks to IndieSage PR for their tireless help and support) and direct the readers to a place where they could purchase the book. Among the many emails and messages calling me every disgusting name in the book, I was receiving tons of support. For every reader who called me sick, a hundred more would tell me how much they loved the book. For every big author who smeared me on social media, ten more were in my inbox assuring me they supported my efforts. For every person who unfriended me, hundreds more wanted to know me and be my friend.
The haters during this time didn’t think punishing me for writing The Wild was enough, so they went on a crusade to take down as many of my books that toed the lines as they could. It was frustrating and exhausting to say the least. These same people were tagging the publisher I had a book deal with trying to get them to cancel me for writing such a “sick story.” Luckily, since I didn’t join in on any of the hatred or say anything cruel back to these people, the publisher continued their relationship with me. Being professional always wins in the end.
Every day, I had five hundred fires to put out. I couldn’t write or get anything done, but each day, I was learning. Growing thicker skin. Getting wiser, tougher, stronger.

Look, a Rainbow!Beyond the storm, opportunity presented itself to me on the horizon with a promising rainbow. Suddenly, I had an agent, I had podcast interviews lined up, I had thousands of new readers. It was incredible once I made it through the worst of it. People wanted me at their signings, in their book groups, and so much more. And, best of all, they were flooding my site to buy this book.
During this time, a book friend, Robyn Crawford, felt so strongly about what I had gone through that she felt moved to start her own platform. A place where people like me could put their book up for sale without worry of having it removed. She spent countless months building Eden Books. Now, it’s grown into a competing platform geared toward romance readers. It’s fantastic and has many new, exciting things that will be happening soon. (If you’re an author who publishes wide, you need to add Eden Books to your list as I make a decent income from there!)
The Wild went wild, but it also burned us a new path. People could see that a person could write a daring, boundary-pushing book and not be blocked or banned out of existence. That, through some hard work and perseverance, they could continue to sell their stories because the readers were ABSOLUTELY there for them.
And they’re still here.
My readers love The Wild and the other banned books or unsafe for Amazon books that I have. They continue to flood my site and Eden Books looking for these types of forbidden, unsafe for all platforms reads. The support is incredible and inspiring. For every hate thread on Twitter, I’m sent tons of new readers who want to read The Wild and my others. It’s true what they say about how negative press is still good press. Each time they speak of my book, they’re advertising for it. For every one-star, scathing review on Goodreads, I receive so many new lifelong readers who found me because of The Wild.
I weathered the storm and survived.

Future ForecastI love writing and will continue to write. I’m always asked if I’ll write more books like The Wild, The Free, and Hale. The answer is…absolutely! If the forbidden stories come to me, I’ll write them. I’ll continue to get them to the readers, even if that means loading up a bus and driving around the world to sell it to them in a dark alley.
I’m not ashamed and neither are my readers! We read what we want.
People don’t like being told they can’t read something. We humans are built to make our own decisions. None of us like being told we aren’t smart enough or strong enough or brave enough to decide for ourselves.
I see a future where authors will continue to write stories that push boundaries and make us think. A future where our readers will continue to come out in droves to find this content. Now that The Wild has sort of paved the way for everyone, I feel like people are more comfortable with voicing the fact that they enjoy books like these because it takes them out of their comfort zone. That they can read stories like this and still go back to their normal every day, rule-following lives. They understand fiction is just that. Fiction.
