The Story of a Balloon I Adopted (AKA Humans Will Personify Anything)

So I was leaving my mother's house a couple of weeks ago and a blue balloon came blowing down the street and hit me in the boots. I picked it up and held it for a moment and thought 'well, this won't do, I'm sorry someone left you outside in the storm, why don't you come home with me?'

That same balloon is beside me now, though as balloons do it's lost most of its air and has a rather puckered look to it. All the same it's inside and warm and it gets played with, and that, I have to imagine, i...

Three Act Structure (As Requested by Mimi)

A dear friend of mine (and coincidentally one of my bridesmaids) requested some tips on basic plotting and three act structure. I came into the conversation late and so my contributions to the conversation were a brick instead of "part of the conversation".

Anyway, what you are about to read is what I told her, but cleaned up. And I mean kind of cleaned up, expect this entry to be a little bit sketchy and less coherent than my usual blog entries. That's because it's actually a chat log that I...

Characterization: Character Playlists

Playlists are a huge part of my personal process. I know a lot of people are like 'if you're not butt in seat hands on keys it doesn't really count as work'; and they're right, to an extent, you can't really share your playlists. I mean, you can, but it doesn't "count".

Still, in terms of play and brainstorming and pre-writing, it matters a lot to me and today I'm going to ramble a bit about that.

Note: This was scheduled for Thursday but I think I'm gonna go ahead and let it go up early as a b...

Ohio's Name Change Policy is Bullshit.

So, I thought I was going to spaz about this more, but it turns out, weddings are stressful. That said, my fiance and I have been going through a song and dance about what we're doing with our names, and I would like to take a moment to talk about that.

If you're one of those assholes that doesn't think I'm entitled to everything that he is, and are going to be easily offended by the idea that I don't want to give up my name, don't read. We'll both be happier for it. Unless you decide to fight...

Player's Log: A Few Rambles About our Thursday Night Strahd Game

So we've been playing Curse of Strahd on Thursday nights with my dear friend Brian as the dungeon master. Naturally, since this is a big old ramble about Curse of Strahd there are spoilers ahead if you haven't played it, so click at your own risk.

Dear lord things have gotten intense in this game, alright.

I asked the DM if I could play a vistana and he was cool enough to let me.

This is Vanya. Believe it or not she's a divination wizard (with the lucky feat because that wasn't boosted enough on...

Torchlighters: Samael Trezza Character Interview

Last week I did one of these for Callum, so now I'm going to go ahead and tackle one for Samael, his older brother and another point of view character in Torchlighters. This time I'm using a different set of interview questions, also found over yonder at a slightly adjacent address.

As always, I encourage you to head over there and take a look at the source material but for the time being, let's get to it.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? - "You're going to laugh, but I'd like a coffee s...

Some Thoughts on the Nature of Souls

Souls aren't something you're just given by nature of walking this world. Souls are a thing to be collected and accumulated, something to be earned over time, and they aren't a thing that belongs exclusively to humans and animals.

I'm writing this at my mother's house. I grew up here. I remember waking up and getting ready for school here every morning, watching cartoons and eating blueberry waffles, and dancing around the living room to Livin' La Vida Loca. I remember my family being very dif...
