In The Dirt, first kiss

In The DirtThe fifth book in the Paradise Park series will be out in one week! I’m so excited to share Jo and Eric’s story with you. They were a fun couple to write.

In case you haven’t heard about their story, Jo is Lucy’s best friend (Lucy from Change On The Fly). She works at Hank’s, but has just gotten her dream job as the women’s lacrosse coach at her alma mater, Paradise Park University. Her assistant coach wanted his sister to get the job and is more than happy to tell Jo he doesn’t think she’s qualified.

As their animosity toward each other ramps up, so does their attraction.

Until they snap…

Excerpt from In The Dirt

She opened the door and rushed out, tugging on the back of her skirt. She wasn’t paying attention and ran smack into someone. Her cheek pressed into his hard chest as his hands circled her waist. He smelled so good Jo couldn’t bring herself to step back right away, instead inhaling a deep breath. His hands stayed on her hips, tightening ever so slightly when she leaned in just a little bit closer. Big hands. Hands that spanned her entire sides and made her feel small even though she knew she was anything but.

Maybe he would be willing to take the edge off her desire for Eric.

Jo finally leaned back, her eyes raking up the wide chest and shoulders of the man who held her captive. He took a step toward her, pressing her tighter against him. She could feel him growing hard against her stomach. Desire swept through her, tightening her nipples and her core instantly. She studied the scruff on his face, desire amping up even further at the golden whiskers she wanted to feel against her palm as much as she wanted them against her thighs. She gasped when she met his eyes and saw her desire matched in his.

Eric.

“I’m sorry,” Jo stuttered. “I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.”

Jo took a step back, as much to clear her head as to separate their bodies. She was ready to jump him. She still throbbed between her thighs. She wanted him. God, how she wanted him. But she couldn’t have him.

“Jo,” he growled as he stepped with her, his hands still clasped on her hips.

Without waiting for her to say anything else, he pushed her into the bathroom she’d just left. He kicked the door closed and leaned against it, pulling her body flush to his.

“Jo,” he whispered again, his voice a deep, rough rumble that vibrated through her just seconds before he brought his lips down to hers.

He didn’t kiss her like he loved her. Like he cared about her. He kissed her like he hated how much he wanted her and wanted to punish her for it as much as he needed to punish himself. His lips bruised hers, but she clawed at him to get closer. The first brush of their lips was enough to release the floodgates she hadn’t been able to lock shut since she met him.

Graham helped Abby get her bakery up and running. As a carpenter he loved the challenge of turning the blank space into a bakery. Even more than that, he loved getting to know the beautiful new tenant.

Kismet by Jasmine Hill

I’m thrilled to introduce you to Jasmine Hill today! She’s sharing about her book, Kismet.
Kismet Kismet

Jasmine Hill

Can Tanvi alter kismet’s path?

Tanvi Sharma has always lived life carefully. What has she done, then, to deserve the sentence her family has subjected her to? What cruel form of kismet has intervened so drastically to change her life as she knows it? New Delhi offers Tanvi, who works as a contracted accountant for the Totally Five Star Group, a little solace and removes her from the stifling environment of her father’s business. But she knows it’s only temporary. Soon she has to accept her fate and agree to the marriage her parents have arranged for her—to a man she despises.

She’s all but resigned to her ominous future when a smoldering look from a handsome businessman starts Tanvi’s juices flowing and she allows herself to fantasize about a relationship that can never work. But would a short-term affair be so wrong? Perhaps a no-strings-attached fling with a handsome stranger is just what she needs before entering into a loveless, passionless union.

When Australian businessman Alexander Banks spots Tanvi in the hotel restaurant, the exotic and aloof creature immediately intrigues him. Never one to shirk from a challenge, Alex quickly learns that he has his work cut out for him if he wants to get closer to the reserved beauty.

Alex soon realizes that cultural differences and long-held traditions are obstacles greater than he could ever have envisioned and light years away from his Western rationale. Just when he expects that a relationship with his Indian beauty might be going somewhere, it turns out that someone else has other plans and the Totally Five Star Hotel becomes a dangerous and risky place for them to be.

Excerpt from Kismet

Tanvi gasped in shock as Alexander pressed her against the brick, her back flush with the warm cement. Before she could say or do anything, he grasped both her hands in one of his and pushed them above her head. Her heart beat a rapid tattoo against her ribs. She tipped her head back and eyed him warily. He was looking at her intently, his ice-blue eyes boring into hers from above.

He dropped his head until she felt his lips against her ear. “Shhh,” he whispered.

His cologne, all woodsy and masculine, wafted around her and she relaxed slightly and closed her eyes. He traced his lips across her cheek to her mouth, his breath whisper soft against her skin. Her nipples pebbled and hot desire sluiced through her veins. She waited for Alexander to take her mouth, but he hovered there, a hair’s breadth from her lips.

Please!

Never had she felt such desire just from a man’s proximity. His hard body was contrary to her softer one — a wall of solid muscle. She should have felt afraid but her initial fear had turned to pure want. Then, finally, his lips were on hers, soft but firm and demanding, so demanding as he took her mouth in a powerful kiss. All thought deserted her and she succumbed to his will, urging her body tighter to his. She heard a moan and realized with a start that it came from her. He swallowed the sound as he slanted his lips roughly across hers, invading her mouth with his tongue. He kept her hands imprisoned, preventing her movement. Her mind, made fuzzy through lust and champagne, grasped one thought—it was so hot! If he could make her feel like this, he could hold her captive whenever he wanted. His free hand was at her breast, caressing the side lightly before he smoothed it lower, over her waist until he grasped her hip and pulled her pelvis tightly to his. She could feel his erection between them, hot and thick and pulsing. She moaned again, uncaring of their location and raised her thigh, desperate to feel his throbbing at her core. Her dress restricted her movement and she groaned her frustration. He slowed his assault on her mouth and kissed a trail down her throat before sweeping her dress a little higher up her thighs. Then he was lifting her, his hand on her backside and his thick erection at her sex, grinding into her exactly where she needed it. She gasped her pleasure before he took her lips once more, his mouth demanding and powerful. Tanvi had never felt such desire, such overwhelming sensations. She didn’t want it to stop. Every thought but those of lust and longing had been swept from her brain. All too soon, he pulled away from her, sliding her body slowly down his until her feet touched the ground once more. He dropped his forehead to hers and swore softly through his panting breaths. She couldn’t speak, still too winded and woozy.

Alexander released her hands and rubbed his thumb over her lips. “Your mouth is swollen from my kiss,” he muttered, his voice low and rough. He fixed her dress then stooped and picked up her handbag from the ground where she’d dropped it. “I better get you home.”

Why New Delhi?

One of the many questions I’m often asked is why I set a particular novel in a particular place. In Kismet, my most recent release, I set my story in New Delhi. Kismet is also my second book in Totally Bound’s Totally Five Star collection based around a glamorous Five Star hotel chain. I’m comfortable writing about what I know and as I have lived in New Delhi and I adored my time there, I wanted to use some of my memories and experiences in a story and the Totally Five Star imprint was the perfect opportunity.

India is a country brimming with vibrancy, colour and activity. It’s a bustling and lively melting pot of various cultures, religions and traditions. In Kismet, I take the reader through the streets of New Delhi and to Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. I thought it fitting to include this beautiful monument, designed and constructed out of the fierce love that Shah Jahan held for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal (Chosen One of the Palace).

The research I conducted for this novel was mainly to double check and confirm different aspects. I’m familiar with the city and Indian culture. I did feel that it was very important to verify some of the more significant cultural elements. Also, I ensured through research that the different Indian terms and names were spelt correctly. In Kismet I wanted to use the local dialect (in this case Hindi) rather than the accepted Western spelling for many of the Indian words.

Dealing with the cultural issues was tricky. The cultural differences between India and the West are rather complex. I had quite a lot of exposure to these aspects when I lived in India and I have many Indian friends whom I spent a lot of time with so that helped. In writing Kismet, I also confirmed a lot of the cultural facets with a good Indian friend who also happens to be an editor in New Delhi. Her assistance was invaluable and I actually dedicated Kismet to her.

I was careful with the erotic and BDSM aspects of the story. India is traditionally, quite conservative so I wanted to keep these elements realistic and true to the environment. The BDSM components are lighter than in my other novels and I focused more on the development of a BDSM relationship and the testing and exploration of limits.

Kismet is a story where West meets East and the cultural issues inherent in such a union. It’s a story about passion, risks and sacrifices.

Change On The Fly, proposition

Change On The FlyLucy’s plan was half-cocked, at best. She knew she needed to get her ex back so she could convince her family she would be there for them. She just didn’t know how.

Until she saw Chris on the ice.

Chris clearly didn’t like Derrick, and since she’d already kissed him once, she figured maybe he’d be up for continuing to make Derrick jealous, and accelerate her plan to get him back.

If only she had anything else planned…

Excerpt from Change On The Fly

“I have a proposition for you,” Lucy said before she could change her mind. He quirked an eyebrow at her and she took it as acknowledgement to continue. “I want to make him jealous. You think he’s a jerk, but I love him. He can’t handle it when someone else has something that he thinks should belong to him. When I kissed you the other night he saw us. He’s going to know I did it to make him mad if he finds out I don’t actually know you. Would you consider pretending to be my new boyfriend to piss him off, just until he decides to take me back?”

Naked Guy looked at her carefully. His brows drew together and his face pinched into an uncomfortable expression. Lucy wished she knew what was going through his head. He probably thought she was crazy, but it didn’t matter. Once she had Derrick back and proved to her family she was reliable, she’d never see Naked Guy again.

“What’s in it for me?” he asked finally, holding her gaze.

Lucy shrugged. “Pissing off someone you don’t like?”

He barked out a laugh, one that made her smile. “As much as that appeals to me, I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now. I don’t date for that exact reason. Even if it’s fake, I’m assuming we’d be expected to get together now and then so he will see us and believe this is real. I’m not sure I have the time for that.”

“I’ll feed you. Whenever you want. My family owns Davoli’s.”

“The pizzeria?”

Lucy nodded. “If you’re my boyfriend you eat for free. We’ll have to convince my parents and brothers we’re really together. They think I’m-” She shook her head, stopping before she admitted to him what was really going on. “It’ll be fine.”

He thought for a minute then finally nodded. “I’ll do it. I just hope your brothers don’t kill me.”

Lucy laughed. “They’re all too busy to worry about me. Besides, they’re not that overprotective. It won’t be a big deal.”

Lucy heard the bitter, hurt tone of her voice, but she couldn’t stop it. Her brothers used to go overboard with her, just like her parents always had. Once she started screwing things up, they all backed away from her. Except Matt. But with Matt’s wedding coming up, he was too distracted to worry about Lucy. By the time he was back from his honeymoon she would have Derrick back in her life and she’d show them all she could be counted on, with or without Derrick.

Naked Guy watched her, tilting his head to the side. For a minute she thought he was going to pull her in for a hug, but he didn’t. She stood there, waiting for him to say something else, but she was desperate to get out of there.

“I’m Chris, by the way, Chris Wiser,” he said finally, offering her his hand.

She smiled. “Lucy Davoli.” Lucy slid her palm against his and felt a jolt travel up her arm.

“Nice to meet you, Lucy Davoli,” Chris said, his voice deep and husky.

Q&A Sunday: Workshops

Welcome back to Q&A Sunday! I hope you’re enjoying learning about my writing.

This week I have another question from Jeannie, about workshops…

I know there are several workshop offerings for those interested in writing. Did you participate in a workshop? Did you find it beneficial?

There are tons of workshops out there for people who want to be writers. It’s wonderful! And yes, I take lots of workshops.

I’m a member of RWA – that’s Romance Writers of America. Within RWA there are tons of different chapters, or groups. I have a local chapter where I live and two different online chapters that I’m a member of. And everyone offers workshops. Other chapters offer online workshops that are open to anyone and I’ve taken a bunch, my chapters offer workshops, and the organization as a whole offers online workshops.

Me in Times SquareIn addition, RWA has a conference every summer. The conference is chock-full of information. There are three days of workshops! It’s amazing. Last summer was my first conference (that’s me in Times Square on my way back to the hotel one afternoon). This summer I’ll be traveling to San Diego for my second conference.

Every workshop I take helps. I know that sounds like I’m sucking up, but honestly, it does. I love to learn new things so even a workshop on a topic I already feel familiar with can, and does, help me. It could give me a different way of looking at things, a recommendation of who to work with, or not, or brand new information that I hadn’t been able to figure out before.

One thing I love is that my online workshops are all done through emails and Yahoo groups. If something comes up and I can’t participate in the workshops as they come, I save everything and go back through them when I have some downtime. Last month I went through the notes on a workshop I took last fall. It was a great program, but I just never had the time to review it. I’m so glad I took the time last month.

Thanks so much, Jeannie, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject, or post it in the comments below, and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!

Immortal Relations by G. D. Ogan

Please welcome Guy (G.D.) Ogan today, telling us about his series, Immortal Relations!
Final Cover for Immortal Relations-Adjusted (3)_resized Immortal Relations

by G.D. Ogan

When Gary Logan finds an old photograph of his father in Prague with a woman’s handwriting on the back, he flies there to investigate where his father worked, only to meet and fall in love with a beautiful lady he believes to be a vampire. In love with her, he is initiated into a coven of guardian vampires, beginning an extraordinary journey of epic proportions.

Exciting, erotic, and full of heart-stopping action, Ogan’s debut novel turns human vampire lore on its head, creating a symbiotic relationship between the two species that deepens emotional connections to astonishing effect. But a coven of evil vampires bent on destroying the guardian vampires and feeding on the humans at will have other plans. Adam however assists humans in almost wiping out the evil coven, beginning the ever-increasing relationship between vampires and humans. Gary and Adam then save Great Britain from nuclear theft and attack; when their nemesis make one last-ditch effort in Russia to bring all of the peaceful societies down, Gary, Adam and the coven must save the human species before their enemy’s plans come to fruition.

Probing the grey areas inherent in sexuality, family, and legend, Ogan weaves an amazing tale that examines the very nature of existence. An unrelenting thrill-ride of passion and action, Immortal Relations will leave you breathlessly awaiting the series’ second and third installments, Immortal Relations, Love and War, and Immortal Relations Coming Out.

Let’s get to know Gary…

How do you communicate with your writer? Mostly during his sleeping or waking dreams, that seems to be when I am best able to communicate with my scribe (the “author”).

Do you like the genre you find yourself in? Both I and my scribe felt that the stories I had him write were Paranormal-Action novels…we were both surprised when an editor said they were Paranormal-Romance novels.

Do each of the stories end the way you wanted? Yes, for the most part. Each of the three novels in the series is “stand alone” and each ends on a positive note.

Is there anything that you worry about? What I and the Guardian Vampires fight against is the victory of evil over good…if America continues down the road it is currently on, evil will destroy the world.

When you sleep, what do you wear? Since I am a vampire, I don’t “sleep” but do rest when I listen to music and am usually dressed in slacks and a T-shirt.

What do you see as your strongest attribute? My military background and knowledge of the tools needed to stave off the evil forces increasing daily in the world.

Does anything in the stories cause embarrassment? Not much embarrasses me or my mates (who turned me into a vampire); however my scribe is somewhat embarrassed by the “explicit togetherness” shared by those in the stories…I hate to say this about him, but he is a bit of a prude when it comes to sex but I continue to try and enlighten him!

Is there a major difference you see in relationships between human males and females vs. the same relationship in vampires?  Human men and women are often in turmoil about love, family and finances, seeming to worry needlessly. Vampires, on the other hand, are free of such fears. As invulnerable immortals we have no such worries and our guardian vampires are dedicated to fighting evil, protecting innocent humans (sometimes from themselves). Another difference is we share our sexual lives are shared openly without shame.

What do you like most about where you now reside? I greatly enjoy the humans we now live amongst in Southern Canada; they have proven most gracious and accepting of our vampire group. When we were attacked by the Marxist government in American they rallied around to allow us to remain in Canada rather than deport us or allow the Americans to continue their aggression against us.

What’s your favorite animal? I so love dogs and chose my scribe partly because he loves animals. He dedicated our first book to a no-kill shelter for Bully-Bread dogs in Houston, Texas and there are materials in the stories about the dogs we have saved…he loves cats too.

Buy all three books on Amazon now!

Book #1 “Immortal Relations”  *

Book #2 “Immortal Relations, Love and War”

Book #3 “Immortal Relations Coming Out”

*The first book has some erotic content. For those who prefer less “explicit togetherness” I suggest stating with book #2 as it has a conversation between major characters that covers the important points of the first book. It still has “togetherness” just a bit less “explicit.”

Meet Guy

Born in Washington D.C. early in WW-II, mother and child moved to Texas while father went off to war in the Office of Strategic Services (to later become the C.I.A.). After the war, mother and child returned to Arlington, VA to be joined by father now working in Wash. D.C. and on “temporary duty” around the world. Guy was a long-distance runner, which he continued when the family moved to Northern California in the late 50s. He graduated from Los Altos High School, obtained an Associate of Arts from Foothill Junior College and Transferred to Texas Christian University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the U.S.A.F. While in Air Force he obtained a Master of Arts at Ball State University’s European Campus. Upon his retirement from the service he completed a Master of Education at Hardin-Simmons University. While in this program he taught undergraduate Psychology, Sociology and Counseling at local colleges as well as writing a book on the assessment and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder. He was then employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TX Prison System) to write treatment programs for inmates with addictions and later worked as an Associate Clinical Psychologist performing intakes on prisoners. Guy retired early to care for his disabled mother upon the passing of his father. He, his wife and their three Pomeranians live in West Texas. They have two grown children in other parts of Texas and four grandchildren.

Change On The Fly, one night

Change On The FlyWhen two people are thrown together, either sparks fly or they don’t. With Lucy and Chris, there were always sparks.

They have one night together. One night neither of them planned. One night neither of them thought would happen. But when they walk into the hotel room to one bed, Chris has no idea how he’s going to survive.

Excerpt from Change On The Fly

One bed. There was one bed in the room. A quick glance around revealed no other place to sleep. No couch. No loveseat. Hell, not even a chair. Just the bed.

“Um, sorry. I was supposed to share with Derrick, obviously, and there aren’t any other rooms. If you don’t want to stay I can make up some excuse. Say we broke up or you got sick or something.”

Chris pulled his head out of his ass and let her words sink in. She was ready to break up with him. She was done, letting him out of their obligation. When she’d first propositioned him he was counting the days until he would hear those words, but after getting to know her… A nail through his finger would have hurt less.

“No,” Chris said, moving from his spot in front of the door into the room. “It’s fine. I’ll sleep on the floor.”

Lucy shook her head. “No. I can’t ask you to do that.”

“You didn’t ask. I volunteered.”

“You’re here because of me. I can’t let you sleep on the floor.”

“And what sort of guy would I be if I let you sleep on the floor?”

“I know what sort of guy you are, Chris,” Lucy said softly, ducking her eyes from his. The insistence in her words made his heart skip a few beats. “But I wouldn’t feel right.”

Chris blew out a breath, knowing there was only one solution. The one he wanted more than anything. The one that he’d been dreaming about for days, since she pulled him into bed with her at his house. “We’ll share then. It’s a king. We can be adults about this.”

Lucy’s bright green eyes snapped up to his. Her expression was one of pure surprise. Chris swallowed his disappointment, wishing he’d seen something more… Excitement… Anticipation… Desire… All the things he was feeling. “Of course,” Lucy said finally. “We’ll be fine.”

Q&A Sunday: Inspiration and Ideas

I’m starting a new feature here on my blog. Every week you, yes you, are going to get the chance to ask me questions. Whatever you want to know. If you’ve ever wondered something about being a writer, about my books, or even about me, this is your chance to ask.

This week, we’re talking inspiration and ideas. Jeannie asked…

Each author seems to have a different perspective when it comes to inspiration or ideas for a standalone or series. Do you write off the top of your head, or as you go so to speak? When you get an idea for a story, do you prepare an outline and work from there. When you get your inspiration, do you just go with it or do you have to think about it for awhile?  Have you decided to make a story a series after you have started book 1 or after your fans have requested a 2nd book or both?

I love these questions! It’s a great topic to start out.

IMG_5244So, the first part… I’m a plotter. There are two kinds of writers – plotters and pantsers. Plotters plot everything out in advance. Pantsers write by the seat of their pants. I’ve tried pantsing, but it just doesn’t work for me. I create the whole story before I even sit down to write. I have a notebook (yes, that picture is of my notebooks – and my ‘map’ of Winterville) for each series with tabs for each book and details about the series as a whole. I create maps of my fictional towns (I print out maps of real towns and write in my own street names). I also have an entire character planned from a picture to refer to while I write and a character interview I complete ahead of time. I’m a little anal, but it works for me!

For the story, I do create an outline. I’m not overly detailed with it, but I use a process to lay out what is going to happen throughout the book. If things change a little as I go, I’m not so overplanned that it won’t work. My plan is general so the story can go where it wants as I write, within limits!

When I get inspiration, I do end up sitting on it for a while, but only because I don’t have time to write everything when I think about it! The books I’m writing now (May 2016) are books I thought up years ago. I have ideas for stories that I’ve been sitting on for years. I have my schedule already planned out for 2016, 2017, and 2018. Any new ideas I have will come after that! It’s crazy, but it’s wonderful to never be at a loss for words!

So series vs. single title is something I struggled with a lot at first. My first book (which isn’t published) was a single title, but then I discovered series and how much I enjoyed them. I definitely listen to my readers about what they want though. I’ve been asked for more books in all three ongoing series I have and more are on the way!

Thanks so much, Jeannie, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!

All For Mom (May 26)

Nothing doused an erection like a sick kid. Roger hated that Makayla was sick again. He saw the fear and concern on Nicole’s face, but also the desire. He kissed her once, quickly, and said, “I’ll wait here. You go check on her.”

Nicole nodded once, her lips pressing into a thin line and her shoulders drooping with exhaustion. He hated that she was so upset, but he got it. If Makayla was his kid he would be worried to. He was worried. But he knew it wasn’t his place to help Makayla. He’d be damned if he didn’t help Nicole though.

She vanished up the stairs, running up them two at a time. Roger heard water running and soft voices. After a little while the sounds ceased. He didn’t know what was going on, but he wasn’t going to go check, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to leave.

Roger didn’t know how long he sat there. He flipped channels and found a movie then fell asleep. He woke as Nicole walked back down the stairs, her footsteps alerting him. “You’re still here?” she asked, sounding surprised and confused.

Roger nodded. “I told you I’d wait here. How is she?”

Nicole shrugged and sunk onto the couch next to him. “I think the worst is over. She wanted some water and asked for her humidifier. It took her a little while to fall back to sleep and I think I passed out with her. I’m sorry about tonight.”

Roger shook his head. “Nothing to be sorry about. I had fun. Want to watch the rest of the movie?”

He wasn’t ready to leave and he hoped to get her in his arms again. She was too tired for anything else, but just being close to her was enough for him. When she nodded and rested her head against his arm, he grinned. He lifted his arm and inhaled deep when she curled up under his arm, her head on his chest. Within minutes she was asleep.

All For MomRoger woke up a while later. Nicole was snoring softly against him. All was right in his world. He pulled the blanket from the back of the couch over them and settled back in. It may not have been what he expected for a first date, but he couldn’t deny it was one of the best ones he ever had. One day he’d have to buy Makayla something special for running into him at the store. Without her help, he never would have met Nicole.

The End
