Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride, so sweet
It’s been fifteen years but he still remembers the little things. Sometimes the little things are what matter the most.
Excerpt from Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride
“This looks good.”
“I was going to bring it to you.”
She shook her head. “I’m not helpless.”
“I never said you were. I want to take care of you.”
She smiled, feeling warm and fuzzy inside. It had been ages since she had someone who wanted to take care of her, let alone did.
“Thank you.”
Jake winked at her and handed over a plate with a slice of mushroom and sausage pizza.
“Did you know this was my favorite pizza?”
Jake grinned and shrugged. “Maybe.”
“How did you know this was my favorite?”
“I know you, Alyssa. You might not want to admit it, but I do.”
She smiled, ducking her chin as her cheeks heated. Jake chuckled and cupped her elbow, guiding her to the couch again. They ate and talked and watched tv until Alyssa felt all the tension from the weeks she’d been there easing away. She eyes felt droopy without her anxiety keeping her awake. She leaned her head on his shoulder and watched the show until her eyes closed and she fell asleep.

Q&A Sunday: Writing Quirks
Do you have an interesting writing quirk?
I have to be honest. I’m a strange person. I know this and accept it. I also know all of us have our weird things, and it hard to know what of our habits is weird and what isn’t.
You guys all know that I am a plotter. I detail out main points in the story before I write the first words. I have to know where it’s going and how it’ll get there. Yes, things change sometimes, but mostly, I follow my plan.
Why is this weird? Or interesting?
Well, it’s not really. A lot of authors are plotters. Some are way more detailed than I am. Some are very fluid with their writing. It’s all about the person you are.
What I think might be a little interesting is that I can not, under any circumstances, plot my stories on the computer.
Strange? I don’t know. Maybe not. But I refuse to write longhand and have to type every word into my laptop. But planning it all out? Has to be written.
Sometimes I use sticky notes. That’s what I’ve been doing with Raise A Glass books (this is from Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride). Because they are longer, contain multiple story lines, and have to move a lot of pieces, I use sticky notes. The one downside is they don’t have space for a lot of detail.
For Big & Beautiful, I simply write it out. Notebook paper. A pen. Lots of information. Again, I’m keeping track of a lot and there are multiple stories moving, plus all the different characters. For some reason, it’s easier to write it out with Big & Beautiful.
Other quirks? I don’t know. I’m sure there are some in there, but to me they’re normal!
Thanks so much, Aliana, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject, or post it in the comments below, and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!

#FiveOnFriday with Anne Stone
My name is Anne Stone and I write sweet contemporary romance. For those of you that are new to me, I’ve written three books across two different series. Life’s Second Chances is the first book in the Show Me series. The series follows the Alvarez and Samuels families. The second book in the series, Life’s Gateway to Happiness, was released in November and the third book, Life’s Turned Upside Down, will release in April.
I have a second series called Williams & Company. It follows the Williams & Company security firm as they try and uncover the death of a well-known person. Add in an unplanned pregnancy, a fake relationship, mysterious happenings and PTSD— Never Lose Hope will keep you on the edge of your seat until Williams & Company uncovers who’s behind all of the tragedy.
5 Random questions that I am asked…
What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
For me it is not writing too much. I love to tell a story. Today I find so many stories are rushed and I don’t get to really know the characters. I have a hard time with novellas because I feel like authors barely skim the surface and before you know it the book is over. I hope if I ever write a novella that the reader will still feel like when they walk away from the story that there was nothing left to tell.
What draws you to this genre?
I have a thirteen year old niece and I have elderly family. I want them to enjoy what I’m doing and not be offended by something I may write. I hope to appeal to a larger audience and not be solely focused on a certain age range.
Tell us about your covers and how they come about?
As I write my book, I scour the various stock photo sites. It takes me forever to find my couple, but once I do I pretty much know how I want the cover to look. I often incorporate a scene into my book cover. In Life’s Second Chances, the characters become engaged at the Botanical Gardens. The actual garden referenced in the book was used in the cover. In Life’s Gateway to Happiness, a deer played a predominant role and was featured on the cover. I have a great cover artist who reads me really well and has yet to disappoint me.
If you could spend the day with a character from one of your books who would it be and what would you?
I’ve loved all of my characters but especially those in the Show Me series. I would love to spend a day with Alejandro Alvarez who is the hero in Life’s Second Chances. He’s had a tragic loss that forever changed his life, but he’s also a transplant surgeon that changes peoples’ lives. I’d love to spend a day at the hospital with him. He’s such a kind and caring doctor, and I would love to see how he interacts with his patients.
Of all the characters you have written, who is your favorite, and why?
It’s hard for me to choose one for each character that I’ve written has a quality that I admire. I think my favorite character to write so far has been Gabriella Alvarez. She’s a minor character in my first book, Life’s Second Chances, but she has her own book coming out in April, Life’s Turned Upside Down. She’s passionate about so much. She loves her family and wants to see her brother, Alejandro, happy again. She plays an instrumental role in getting the two main characters, Angelina Samuels and her brother, Alejandro, together in Life’s Second Chances. She’s spunky, funny and has heart. Once she sets her mind on something she follows through until her goal is reached.
Life’s Second ChancesAngelina Samuels has lost the only job she’s ever held. A last minute interview lands her a new teaching job just days before the school year is about to begin. It turns out to be the best thing that could have happened when she realizes that her best friend from college, Gabriella Alvarez, is also a member of the teaching staff.
Gabriella’s brother, Alejandro, relocates to his hometown after having lived away from family and friends since he left for college to become a renowned transplant surgeon. He’s settling into a new job, reacquainting himself with family and friends, and is learning to deal ever-so-slowly with the personal loss that forever changed his life.
When Angelina’s sister experiences a health crisis, Alejandro is there to support her and her family. And when Angelina herself experiences a personal tragedy, Alejandro is the only one to guide her through it. As love stares down at them, can Angelina help Alejandro take that second chance on love and marriage?

Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride, release day!
I’ve been thinking about this book for years. Years and years. I’ve only been married once, and hope to stay that way, but I felt for Alyssa and her three failed marriages. Going back home was a hard decision for her, especially knowing what she would face.
Jake was kind of the opposite. Where Alyssa felt repressed by her large family, Jake loved it. He couldn’t imagine leaving, even though she wasn’t there anymore. They both decided to stay away from each other, but that’s usually easier said than done!
Excerpt from Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride
They walked through the trees to the edge of the water. She gasped when she saw what he’d done. When she spun back to look at him, tears brimmed in her eyes.
“Why are you crying?” he asked, rushing to set his dinner down. He took hers from her and wrapped her in his arms while she cried softly.
When Alyssa finally stilled and took a deep breath, she leaned back, keeping her arms around his waist. Jake rested his forehead against hers again, loving to see her so close. When she’d first left, he’d asked Marie for a picture of Alyssa. He used to stare into her eyes like she was there and tell her everything that was going on. Even though she wasn’t there, he felt better talking to her.
“I’m sorry. I don’t think anyone has ever done anything like this for me. It’s really sweet, Jake.”
He kissed her nose and then her lips, finally giving up the fight he had with himself to keep their night sex-free. Just one taste of her lips and he was hard and aching for her. She whimpered and pulled him in tighter and he knew he was a goner. He’d do anything she wanted him to do.
Forever.
When they came up for air, Jake rested his forehead against hers again. “I’m sorry you didn’t have someone who treated you the way you deserved to be treated.”
She smiled. “I did. But I was too stupid to realize it.”

Q&A Sunday: Where to live?
If you could live anywhere in the world with your family where would it be and why?
I have to admit, I’m pretty lucky. I love where I live. My husband and I went through this discussion many times over the almost 13 years we’ve been married. We met in Columbia, SC at college, then moved to Charleston, SC and lived there for 13 years. As much as I loved SC, it was never home for me.
I’ve considered where else I’d love to live. I have a few requirements…
It has to have four seasons. South Carolina was beautiful, but there was no fall, and spring was really just a precursor to summer. Even winter was weak, really like a fall without the changing colors. In my perfect world, you shouldn’t be able to wear shorts on Christmas. Although I did enjoy wearing flip flops all twelve months of the year.
It has to have things to do. I’m not that busy of a person, but I need something. We’re not self-sustaining, and I don’t ever want to be. I like my cable tv, my internet, and having a grocery store five minutes away. I also like Target (a bit too much) and having professional sports teams in my city. Parks are fun and I enjoy getting the kids outside, but we need to have options when we want to get out of the house.
The people have to be great. I’m sure most people will say their neighbors are great, that their city or town is amazing. In Buffalo, it’s so true. We have amazing people around here, people that will help each other, that watch out for each other, that welcome you in. When we moved to the area (back for me) the parents I met in my kids’ classes were always so nice and friendly. They didn’t exclude me because I didn’t know them, and that matters to me. I’m naturally a very shy person and have trouble getting to know people because I struggle with small talk and come across as snobby because I just don’t know what to say. The people here engaged me in conversation and were always friendly. I love that!
I know I can get those things in a lot of places, but the most important one for me was being somewhere near family and friends. My parents are five minutes away from us, my sister and brother are each twenty minutes away. We have friends within ten minutes. It makes life so much nicer to have people around we can get together with and we can count on.
So, if I could live anywhere, I’d live right where I am. Of course, I’d have my house built already, but that’ll come eventually! I love living in Buffalo, and I really don’t want to move!
Thanks so much, Vicki, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject, or post it in the comments below, and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!

Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride, second chances
I’ve never written a second chances book, or the one that got away, or anything like that. It was a challenge for me to make sure Alyssa and Jake could have a second chance that made sense. He was hurt and mad, she was ashamed and felt like she didn’t deserve him. But they couldn’t just walk away.
Excerpt from Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride
Alyssa shrugged. “I made some shitty choices. Jake got caught in the middle. It wouldn’t be fair of me to expect him to wait this long for me.”
Sean examined her closely. “He may not have remained celibate, but I do think he’s been waiting for you. Maybe I shouldn’t tell you this either, but he hasn’t had a serious relationship since you left. I think a part of him still loves you, Alyssa. Even if he doesn’t want to.”
Tears stung her eyes and blurred her vision. She didn’t know if they were happy tears or sad ones. Maybe just angry tears. Angry that she’d stolen their happiness from them. If she could go back to her eighteen year old self, she’d slap herself silly. She threw away the best thing that had ever happened to her and regretted it ever since.
“I’m sorry, Sean. I need to go.”
Alyssa pushed away from the table, leaving her half-eaten lunch and her cousin behind. Sean called after her, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t stop. She just ran. Through the vines toward the water. To the only place she ever felt like she could be herself.
She just hoped she would be alone.
***
Jake saw Alyssa tear across the vineyard toward the tree and had to force himself not to follow her. He didn’t want to know what was wrong.
Except he did.
It fucking gutted him to see her crying.
He looked back up toward the inn and saw Sean standing just off the deck, watching Alyssa run. Jake had to know what he said to upset her so badly. She’d had enough shit from Andie. She didn’t need it from Sean, too.
He stormed toward The Drunken Grape and was in Sean’s face before he even had a chance to sit back down.
“What the fuck did you say to her?”
Sean didn’t back down. They stood toe to toe, Sean close enough to Jake’s 6’2” that they could look each other in the eye.
“You need to back off, Jake. You have no idea what you’re accusing me of.”
Jake remembered for a second that Sean was technically one of his bosses, but he didn’t give a shit. He’d hurt Alyssa. And that was all that mattered.
“What did you say to her?”
“I told her I think you still love her. That I think you’ve been waiting for her all this time. And that you haven’t had a relationship since she left.”
All the anger in Jake deflated faster than a popped balloon. He sunk into a chair and dropped his head into his hands.
“I’m guessing I was right based on your reaction. You still love her, don’t you?”

QA Sunday: Hardest Scene
What was the hardest scene or story you’ve written and why?
Well, if you’ve been around here for a while, or read my books, you know I write very light-hearted romance. Yes, my books are steamy, but they’re light. There’s not a lot of heavy scenes or anything dark. So hard for me has come in the form of the opposite of what I write.
The hardest scene I’ve ever written was Claire’s scene where she detailed the high school rape by her boyfriend. I can’t imagine what she went through. Knowing there are people out there who’ve been through the same made me want to get it right, but also respect the victims.
There’s never a time when it’s okay, but unfortunately it happens. I wanted to show one person’s story. No, it wasn’t based on any facts. It was purely fiction. I know everyone handles painful and difficult situations differently, and this was a fictional interpretation of what one person could have done.
But it was hard. Impossibly hard. To imagine the situation was painful. To write it and have to feel what she went through was… I can’t even explain. If you’ve read Lush & Lovely, you know Claire was still dealing with what happened years later. It’s been over a year since I’ve written that book, but I still remember it. I remember the scene because it stuck with me. It was hard. I didn’t want to write it, but I felt like it needed to be told.
I hope it was done well.
Thanks so much, Aliana, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject, or post it in the comments below, and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!

#FiveOnFriday with Jennifer Perkins
Thank you, Mary, for the opportunity to tell you about my latest novella, Daring Return. I’d like to start with the blurb so readers have a chance to see what the book is about.
Blurb:Rose Perez is a physical therapist who shares a secret with Miami Thunder halfback, Bruce Hawkins. They also have separate careers outside of their shared world that could become derailed if their secret gets out. Neither had wanted a relationship. Does Rose have what it takes to look past the life Bruce is trying to portray or is she starting to fall in love?
Bruce decided early in life that true love was something other men wanted. Does he have what it takes to help Rose find real happiness without risking his heart?
Some Inspiration:
This book really took me out of my comfort zone, in a good way, because it helped me grow as a writer. My previous kindle world book, Forever Yours, is a sweet book. Daring Return is the opposite. It’s sexy, fun, with a BDSM flair. An author friend suggested a couple of sites for research and, wow, BDSM a very different world from what I’ve ever known.
My husband hurt his knee in October and, six surgeries later, is still recovering. Years prior, our son injured his ACL. So, I thought, what kind of injury could Bruce have that might hurt his football career? Haha, you could say my husband and son were the inspiration for that part of this novella. They, along with my daughter, helped answer questions I had about football. Being a Dare To Love book, of course, it’s football themed.
Since this novella isn’t available until the 28th, I’ll leave you with my Amazon Author page link so you can pick it up when it’s out. And sweet books can also be fun to read if you’d like to take a look at my debut novella, Forever Yours.
https://www.amazon.com/Jennifer-Perkins/e/B01M992WVJ/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0
Excerpt:
Before Bruce could say anything else, he heard the slam of Rick’s phone in his ear. The noise factor was probably one of the reasons Rick hadn’t used his cell. After the falling out he had with Rose, Bruce decided she’d be the best person to work with. He’d acted as a jerk, not letting her explain what happened. He needed to give her the benefit of the doubt and if he had to, he’d apologize to her. This day couldn’t get any worse. Then Bruce’s phone rang and he saw Randy’s number on the display.
“How much are you looking for or are you calling to tell me you found a real job?”
“That’s no way to greet your little brother,” Randy said.
“You stopped being my brother when you decided drugs, booze, and women were more important than family.” Bruce got out of his car and slammed his door shut in frustration. This was one conversation he’d rather not have.
“That’s why I’m here. So we can bond. Actually, it was mom’s idea. She suggested I crash here with you a while. You know, maybe pick up some kinda inspiration.”
Bruce had just gotten in the elevator and punched the number for his floor when his brother’s request registered with what he said. “What do you mean crash here? Where the hell are you?”
“Sitting on your couch looking at the great views you have. You know you’ve got a really nice place.”
Bio:Jennifer Perkins grew up in a small New England town where quaint neighborhoods still remain hidden. This combination has led to a sweet mix of her love of family, romance, and imagination.
With a degree in Marketing, she’s held a potpourri of jobs. She’s an active member of RWA. Her two young adult children, while pursuing their careers are, with her husband, her greatest cheerleaders. Jennifer lives in Florida with her husband. When she isn’t dreaming of interesting ways to enable everyone to join in her characters’ lives, she loves to spend time with family, garden, dabble in photography, and go for long walks on the beach.

Here are five fun facts that I’d like to share:
1. When I’m not writing, I like to dabble in photography.
2. I love traveling. My favorite memories are when my children were little and we traveled to some wonderful places.
3. I’m an introvert. I find it difficult to go out in public letting people know I’m an author.
4. I love animals. Dogs specifically, and already have the names and descriptions of the dogs I’d like to put in my future romances.
5. I don’t have a bucket list, but if I did, I would love to be a mascot at a sports game. I’ll refer you to my number three fun fact, and that’s why I’ll never be a mascot. Haha.

Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride, first kiss
It’s Teaser… Thursday? Yeah, so I forgot to put up a post Tuesday! Sorry about that! But I had to share Alyssa and Jake’s second first kiss. Neither want it to happen, but neither can resist.
Excerpt from Never A Bridesmaid, Always A Bride
Jake heard the pain in her voice. The regret. All the things he wished she’d felt when she left him. She wasn’t talking about Lana.
And dammit if Jake could stay on his side of the kitchen.
He moved around the table, stalking her. She watched him getting closer, her eyes widening with each deliberate step he took. When he reached her, Jake didn’t pause. He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t even think.
He just took what was his.
Alyssa.
His lips crashed down onto hers the same moment his hands dove into her hair. The short strands slipped through his fingers before he could grab hold. He reached for them again, and used his grip to tilt her head to suit him. She whimpered against him, her hands reaching up between them. He didn’t know if she was going to push him away or pull him closer, but he wasn’t waiting to find out.
He thrust his tongue between her teeth, prying her lips apart. She froze for a heartbeat, then stroked her tongue along his with a moan that alerted his dick to all the action going on.
He was consumed with consuming her. He needed her. He needed her to know he’d never stopped loving her. Never stopped waiting for her. He could convince her to stay this time. She wouldn’t leave him again.
She just told him so.
As his tongue stroked her, relearning her mouth and the way she liked to be kissed, his hand roamed her body. She was too tiny for him, too angular, but he didn’t care. She was Alyssa. His Alyssa. And he wasn’t going to let her go again.
