Book Review: All the Lovely Bad Ones by Mary Downing Hahn
My book review of All The Lovely Bad Ones by Mary Downing Hahn. A captivating ghost story that balances just the right amount of spookiness and mystery for middle-grade readers.
Title: All The Lovely Dan Ones
By: Mary Downing Hahn
Genre: Paranormal
Pages: 192
Release Date: March 18th, 2008
Publisher: Clarion Books
Rating: ★★★★☆
Summary from Goodreads:Travis and his sister, Corey, can’t resist a good trick-so when they learn that their grandmother’s sleepy Vermont inn has a history of ghost sightings, they decide to do a little “haunting” of their own. Scaring the guests proves to be great fun, and before long, the inn is filled with tourists and ghost hunters eager for a glimpse of the supernatural. But Travis and Corey soon find out that they aren’t the only ghosts at Fox Hill Inn. Their thoughtless games have awakened something dangerous, something that should have stayed asleep. Restless, spiteful spirits swarm the inn, while a dark and terrifying presence stalks the halls and the old oak grove on the inn’s grounds. To lay the ghosts to rest, Travis and Corey must first discover the dark history of Fox Hill and the horrors visited on its inhabitants years earlier.

The story revolves around siblings Travis and Corey who spend their summer at their grandmother’s supposedly haunted inn in Vermont. Always on the lookout for some fun and adventure, they decide to play a prank by pretending to be ghosts. However, their antics awaken real spirits—children who were mistreated long ago—and the siblings find themselves entangled in a chilling mystery that needs to be resolved to put these spirits to rest.
The characters in All The Lovely Bad Ones are well-developed and relatable. Travis and Corey are mischievous but good-hearted kids whose curiosity and bravery drive the plot forward. Their grandmother is a warm, supportive figure, providing a comforting contrast to the unsettling occurrences at the inn. The ghostly children, each with their own backstory, add depth to the narrative and elicit empathy from the readers.
Hahn’s writing is accessible and engaging, perfect for her target audience. She excels at creating a spooky atmosphere without crossing into territory that would be too frightening for younger readers. The pacing is brisk, with just enough suspense to keep readers turning the pages. The author’s ability to blend humor with horror ensures that the story remains enjoyable and not overly intense.
The novel explores themes of courage, redemption, and the importance of family. Travis and Corey’s journey is not just about solving a mystery, but also about understanding the consequences of their actions and taking responsibility. The resolution of the ghostly mystery brings a sense of closure and peace, highlighting the idea that even the mischievous and lost can find redemption.
All The Lovely Bad Ones is a delightful read for young fans of ghost stories. Mary Downing Hahn’s ability to craft a story that is both eerie and heartwarming makes this book stand out in the genre. While it may not offer anything groundbreaking for older readers, it is sure to be a hit with its intended audience, providing just the right mix of chills and charm.
For its engaging storyline, well-rounded characters, and skillful balance of spookiness and warmth, All The Lovely Bad Ones earns a well-deserved four stars. It's a perfect pick for a cozy, spooky night of reading for middle graders and even adults who appreciate a well-told ghost story.

Annie Bot by Sierra Greer
My book review of Annie Bot by Sierra Greer. A charming and thought-provoking tale that seamlessly blends science fiction with heartwarming themes of friendship, identity, and what it means to be truly alive.
Title: Annie Bot
By: Sierra Greer
Genre: Scifi/Romance
Pages: 231
Release Date: March 19th, 2024
Publisher: Mariner Books
Rating: ★★★★☆
Summary from Goodreads:Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner, Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the cute outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard.
She’s learning, too.
Doug says he loves that Annie’s artificial intelligence makes her seem more like a real woman, but the more human Annie becomes, the less perfectly she behaves. As Annie's relationship with Doug grows more intricate and difficult, she starts to wonder whether Doug truly desires what he says he does. In such an impossible paradox, what does Annie owe herself?

Greer's writing is both engaging and imaginative, painting a vivid picture of a near-future society where robots and humans coexist in complex and often challenging ways. Annie is a wonderfully crafted character, her innocence and curiosity making her instantly endearing. Her interactions with humans are filled with genuine emotion and humor.
The novel excels in exploring deep philosophical questions about consciousness, morality, and the nature of humanity without becoming overly heavy-handed. Greer's ability to balance these themes with a captivating plot keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. The pacing is generally well-maintained, although there are moments where the story slows down to delve into technical explanations, which might not appeal to every reader.
However, it would be remiss not to mention the book's cover, which unfortunately does not do the story justice. The design is uninspired and fails to capture the essence of the tale within. Its lackluster imagery and poor color choices make it easy to overlook on a bookstore shelf, potentially deterring readers who might otherwise be captivated by the story. This is a shame, as the narrative deserves a cover that reflects its depth and creativity.
Sierra Greer has crafted a unique and touching story that will resonate with fans of speculative fiction and anyone interested in the evolving relationship between humans and technology. Annie Bot is a testament to the power of storytelling in addressing complex issues with empathy and insight, earning it a well-deserved four stars.

Summary from Goodreads:COLIN AND PENELOPE’S STORY
Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend’s brother for . . . well, it feels like forever. After half a lifetime of watching Colin Bridgerton from afar, she thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret . . . and fears she doesn’t know him at all.
Colin Bridgerton is tired of being thought of as nothing but an empty-headed charmer, tired of the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, who can’t seem to publish an edition without mentioning him. But when Colin returns to London from a trip abroad, he discovers nothing in his life is quite the same—especially Penelope Featherington! The girl who was always simply there is suddenly the girl haunting his dreams. When he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide . . . is she his biggest threat— or his promise of a happy ending?

Quinn masterfully weaves a tale of unrequited love, self-discovery, and societal expectations. Penelope, often overlooked and underestimated, is a relatable and endearing heroine whose quiet strength and intelligence shine through. Colin, the charming and adventurous Bridgerton brother, undergoes significant character development, revealing depths that were previously hinted at but never fully explored.
The chemistry between Penelope and Colin is electric, their banter sharp and witty. Quinn's signature humor and vibrant writing style make this love story both poignant and utterly engaging. The plot is well-paced, balancing romance with moments of genuine emotion and surprising twists, particularly surrounding the revelation of Lady Whistledown's true identity.
Romancing Mr. Bridgerton is a testament to Quinn's ability to create characters that readers can root for and fall in love with. It's a story about seeing beyond the surface, embracing one's true self, and finding love in the most unexpected places. Fans of the series will not be disappointed, and newcomers will quickly become enamored with the charming world of the Bridgertons. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys historical romance with depth, humor, and heart.
